pleasantly surprised with Iron Bull that dude will really be popular if this poll is any indication
in general the men seem to be more popular this time around and thats no surprise the ladies are no Leliana or Morrigan
in that regard
Cassandra only 5th seeing as she is the only straight romance option for males thats not really a good result
the same with Josephine, I mean Sera and Dorian are more popular than her even though she is available to all races and both genders,
like Iron Bull

I'm a little surprised Iron Bull is so popular. I mean I like him and am really looking forward to his romance, but I figured he might be a little more niche. It would be interesting to see what the results would be with a larger more mainstream crowd, I suspect it would shuffle around quite a bit.

Male LIs are more popular than female LIs. So I suspect most of the BSNers are female.......
The simple fact is that there are more male companions than female. It seems logical to me that there are going to be more male LIs, and thus more of a pull.

I can't tell who I gonna romance till I meet them. I always make plans but when I see characters and talk to them for the first time I'm usually like this - "Nope, you won't do. False alarm". Planned to romance Zevran and Fenris, ended up with Morrigan and Anders instead xD I don't even want to think about DAI for now, I'm sure the story will repeat itself. So the one thing I've decided is to roll a male character... and see where it'll lead then.

It makes some sense actually.
Iron Bull is being voiced by a well known voice actor who previously voiced a character in another Bioware game very well and he also got his VO video early on where we see Freddy Prinze really being enthusiastic and super awesome about his role as Iron Bull's VO. Then there is the fact he is the total opposite of any Qunari and he is the first romanceable Qunari in the game. Plus there is the "RideTheBull" thing.
Cassandra is 5th because she has nothing that would appeal to the typical straight male. She is in her late-30s, straight men of all ages like women in their mid-20s to late 20s which makes her quite old for romance. In terms of looks, she is terrible compared to Morrigan, Leliana, Isabela and Merrill. Which means Cassandra's saving grace will be her personality. Alas most of the time we saw her losing her temper and just stabbing stuff as opposed to being thoughtful, intelligent and investigative, she is a Seeker after all, one who investigates corruption but most of the screen time showing her only shows her as having more sword than sense. Bioware could easily remedy all this by releasing a Cassandra VO video and tweaking her appearance slightly to make it more appealing to straight men. Most probably they are still tweaking Cassandra since we have not seen any appearance of her in any of the recent videos so far.
Josephine is not as popular is most likely because she is a new follower, there has been no VO video of her yet and the last time Bioware did a Adviser romance was in Mass Effect 3 and it severely lacked content. Yeah, they have been saying that Advisers get as much content as followers but again I think the fanbase is just being cautious. I mean Samantha Traynor was not very well known at all and she was a big hit among the ME3 players. Yeah I know Cullen is an adviser as well but he is Cullen, he has been in 2 games before and most girls' panties gets wet when they hear his name so...
Sera and Dorian are popular because one, both of them look hot. Yes I am a straight man and I find Dorian hot. Both of them are easily the best looking companions that players can romance. IMO, Vivienne is the best looking of them all but she is not romanceable. Secondly, both of them are intriguing to the playerbase in that they are strict homosexual follower love interests, something which Bioware has not done before. Then there is the fact that Sera is someone with a great sense of humor and has a good voice as well. Dorian is voiced by an awesome actor, is well dressed and is very suave. It is not a big surprise they are popular.
Personally my canons, I have one male and one female, will romance Josephine and Solas respectively.

Hmm this is a really hard question for me to answer. Me the player is rarely romantically attracted to people in general let alone fictional characters, so I tend to view romances from the point of view of what makes for a good story that I'd like to see play out. For this reason, I can seldom both self insert and still romance a character...it just feels really awkward to me.
That said, from the perspective of who's romance and/or character I'm likely to find most interesting based on the little info we have, I'd say (in no order): Cullen, Dorian, IB and Cass. I'm also interested in the other four, but perhaps comparatively slightly less so because we know too little about them. I like drama, I like angst and I like relationships/characters that have a potential to be flawed, polarizing or show great character development. This is the reason why I've that preference for those 4 characters.
As an aside, Varric is perhaps the closest to the type of character we have in DAI that me the player would be attracted to (personality wise, physically I tend to prefer tall men). I can't say I'm not disappointed by the lack of Varric romance, but I'm ok with Bianca being his one true love. I'd just like to see him happy.

I think it goes beyond player gender... when you look at the BSN, you need to also consider orientation and willingness to play as the opposite gender. Plus you have to take into account how many people who use BSN also participated int he poll, although I will admit that 2,320 is a lot more responses than I would have expected.
Tbh, I think that Cassandra did quite well considering the fact that the other option for straight male characters has lesbian votes mixed into her totals. Whatever percentage those extra votes account for, it is reasonable to conclude that Josephine is less popular than Cassandra among the forumites who voted. This isn't even taking into account those straight male players who routinely play as lesbians and thus voted for Sera or Josephine as their first run LI... I'm sure there may also be a few female players who are playing as males in order to romance Cassandra, but that seems far less likely on the first playthrough... maybe on a subsequent one, but not the first. If given a choice, it's far more common for men to play as women for one reason or another, at least by my own observations. In any case, we still have Josephine's bisexuality to consider, which would draw votes for a variety of reasons.
I'm not surprised at all by Solas's numbers, considering how heavily restricted his romance is... Compared only to the heterosexual male characters, his numbers aren't particularly impressive, but they are still decent all things considered.
But yeah... no matter how you look at this poll, breaking things down strictly along gender lines is too much of a simplification considering the makeup of BSN. There are far more factors at play.

very good and detailed post
I agree with you about Cassandra and even though I like her "warrior" personality its not enough to forget the bad appereance
well at least we got Josephine but like you said I doubt it will be that good but maybe thats because I want my LI to along side me not sit at home

And those poll rankings are really close, less than 1% between positions 3-7 in the 'most preferred LI'...
That says to me that BioWare have done a cracking job creating characters that different people think they will like.
I'm also really pleased that >88% are fairly or very happy with the romances.
This forum sometimes gives the impression that particular 'concerns' are much more vociferous than they really are.

It will be interesting to see new results when people finally play the game and how their views may change. It will take some time, though. Inquisition is a huge game. I plan several playthroughs (unless the game will disappoint me severely), as a lot of people.

Once the game comes out I wouldn't mind seeing the results of how many people romanced who in the game as a whole
They typically tend to skew towards female LIs available to male characters. I think it was the case in Origins, DA2 and Mass Effect. BSN is a fairly small sample size and not always indicative of the overall fanbase.

Yeah, sometimes it's hard to get a clear read. It's easy to take all the negativity in, but people are always more vocal about their complaints than they are their praises, so there is always a skew. I'm also happy that people seem to be ok with things, after the storm of utter absurdity (especially on another forum).

In my experience, BSN is actually a much more pleasant section of the fanbase. As far as the internet goes, outside of BSN, Bioware fans seem to be perpetually angry, whiny, self-entitled and generally miserable at the mention of almost everything concerning Bioware. But then there is the biggest slice of the fanbase that don't post on any of the internet message boards.
So, certainly not indicative of the fanbase as a whole, as you said, and probably biased and skewed in a positive slant, even if it sometimes feels like there's much more negativity.
And I would like to close the post by going on the record that Cassandra seems both more interesting and better-looking than any of the previous female love interests in the series (outside of perhaps Merrill... it's close). I seem to be in an incredible minority when it comes to that.

Here's the flaw in your data analysis: You are only using one of the two data sets. You are only using the "most preferred" data set, but then trying to generalize that to "popularity". Cass isn't the "fifth most popular". She's the fourth most popular (and most popular female option) with 48.91% of all respondents indicating that they will romance her. That's significant. Similarly, Josephine is the fifth most popular overall with 48.6% of all respondents indicating that they will romance her. She is more popular than both Sera (46.95%) and Dorian (39.57%).

Plus Josephine is romanceable by both genders whereas Cass is not, so that further shows Cass has a good portion of the lead among females. Of course, there are people willing to swap gender/sexuality to romance her, so it could be that too.

Cullen is the only one I have any interest in romancing at all in DAI and until I see how his personality presents in game, my interest is marginal at best.
