Just curious to see what the opinions are on siding with either the mages or the templars in DAI? I know I will side with both of them at one point, but my first play through is usually the one that reflects my personal opinions the most. Without having played the game yet, from this point what do you plan on doing? I am thinking I will side with the Templars for my first go. I seem to feel slightly better about myself when I side with them over the mages. Especially if there are going to be more crazy Anders-esque mages running around blowing sh*t up. I

i would have to see how the factions have changed since dragonage 2 before i could fully decide, and to be honest i would prefer a peaceful solution as opposed to siding with one and destroying the other.

I agree if there is a 3rd option to make peace and keep both sides around I would definitely go for that.

While templars are needed theres been abuses and if i was treated like a criminal due to other fools of my ethnic group(like i am in real life) i would fight to change perception and get rid off the main group that causes partial tension. Maybe the time of templars are over... perhaps it time for a nuetral group not affiliated with the chantry to watch over a dangerous group

Do you have any idea what you've just started?
Anyway ideally I'd like to make a compromise between the templars and mages based around the reformation of the circles, with relaxed rules and more focus on education than imprisonment, while still retaining the Templars as a policing force, albeit a lot more accountable. Visits from outside family members and friends would be allowed a lot more, some mages might be allowed out (with templar escorts) for short periods of time for good behavior and relatioships between mages would not be forbidden.
I strongly doubt I'll be able to get it to this level of customization but something along those lines would be nice.

My second will side with the mages as far as she can. Even with the Venatori, again, if possible.
My third will side with whoever is right in that moment.
My fourth will side with the one who can benefit her most.

I apologize in advanced for brining up this topic ![]()
I just hope this doesn't go off the rails like the romance threads. Those things get pretty scary.

I'm suprised that there is rational templars around in DAI, I though everyone wise had left the order and rest were all red lyrium templars.
I'm happy that there seem to be templars around that aren't batshit-crazy but I'm not very intrested chosing between those factions. If the options are going to be like in ME3 between quarians and geth I will just throw my controller through my window and stop playing for few days. Seriously DA2 had that enough for life-time already.
As players I'd like to go for compromise as much as possible. My characters might disagree and lean on other side more.

In my case it will depend on actual events in game. In Origins I was more on the mages side, didn't like whole circle idea blah blah, but then in DA II most of the time I was supporting templars, cause blood magic everywhere, so honestly I have no idea.
Though if I would have the option to stay neutral I guess that would be most tempting. If some kind of compromise will be possible I will go for it.

LOL, OP. You are perhaps unaware of the fact that this topic takes up a significant percentage of all DA forum traffic of the last few years? There are countless threads on the topic.
My own position is pro-mage. I associate backwards-looking traditionalism with the templars and forward-looking acquisition of knowledge and exploration of the unknown with magic and mages, and it doesn't matter much that the latter is usually more dangerous. The mageborn need training, and yes, there may even be a need to kill those who can't learn control, but such things must never be done to them by their ideological enemies. I also despise the Chantry's attitude to magic. I actually think that the ancient magisters did something admirable when they attempted to breach the Golden City, and this is only marred by their methods (blood sacrifice) and the fact they may have been somewhat reckless. So while I concede the need for some mandary measures regarding how the mageborn grow up, thematically and philosophically, I am fully on the side of magic.
For more details read my "Mage Manifesto" thread (see sig). Eorlin Amell's rhetoric may indicate a more extreme stance, but that's just politics.
