The Templars have gone mad, and to a larger degree than the mages are responsible for this war. The reasonable ones I want to co-opt, but the Templar leadership does not seem to be among them. Then there's the mages; I agree that a good number of the Templars are asses, but the Circles serve the necessary function of making sure abominations don't form in the general population of Thedas. (They also serve the necessary function of restraining irresponsible and outright malevolent mages, but if that couldn't be handled in different ways Tamriel would be a smoking ruin by now.) So, they're going to need to go back. And this probably won't be done quietly.

Kind of a tangentially off topic rant here...

Can't compare Tamriel to Thedas. The Aurbis is literally at war with itself. It's based on Eastern philosophies dealing with balance. The two most powerful deities of Mundus (Akatosh and Lorkhan) are basically one god with a split personality disorder.

Thedas doesn't really work like that. If a bunch of crazy mages with sufficient power decide to destroy the world they might succeed.

Like the Elder one?

I'm betting ten bucks to my buddy luke that he turns out to be a mage or abomination.

I'm betting he's a demon, probably either Pride or Despair, though if he has or takes a host that host is probably a mage.

Also, I don't see your point as far as the "god at war with itself" thing. I don't see how Tamriel is in any less danger than Thedas, apart from the abomination thing; we've seen what a crazy mage can do in Tamriel several times: basically each game is a near-apocalypse, and it usually involves a crazy mage.

E.G. Mannimarco, Jagar Tharn, Miraak, Abnur Tharn etc... Do you think power hungry evil mages is a trope?

Isn't the elder one that dragon from the very end of the trailer? Kind of looked like an old god.

I'm pretty sure the Elder one is that green, demonic looking humanoid thing I caught a glimpse of. (So, again, probably either an abomination or a really powerful, and thus almost human, demon.)

Alduin, a primodial aspect of Akatosh, returns to usher in a new kalpa (a reset button reverting time to it's beginning). The Last Dragonborn, a prophesied aspect of Lorkhan (known as Shor or Shezarr by Men), emerges to stop him. It's a never ending cycle like an ouroboros.

At some point in the 1E Alessia and the Marukhati Selective fused Auri-El and Shor or Shezarr through mythopoeia. They are now secretly one god called Akatosh. Look at a statue of Talos (who was an avatar of Lorkhan). Look at a statue of Akatosh. It's the same thing in reverse.

Alduin is real, and he ent Akatosh. Though as for the rest, I suppose the whole "divine protection" thing might give Tamriel some protection. Though it might be that Andraste sent the Inquisitor to do the same thing; certain characters in the game seem to think so.

I assume you are referring to Blinky?

Thedas has a benefit, though.

Most demons actually don't want to destroy the world.

In Tamriel, quite a few of them do.

Demons just want to go joyriding in your brain in Thedas.

Ummm, we don't know that for a fact. I would not be surprised if world annihilation is a desire for upper level demons.

Do demons want to rule the world or destroy it? They are very individualistic from what I've experienced. Some simply want to possess a powerful mage, others want to dominate mortals, others make more abominations.  If they are not united behind the Elder One, maybe we can ferment chaos in their ranks. Make a deal with a powerful demon and recruit his followers to oppose the Elder One. Divide and Conquer. Fight Fire with Fire. Fight Demons with Demons.

They only exist to their bailiwick.

Demons are stupid like that, Like Qunari.

Well, so far, none of them have expressed that desire and everything we've seen in them shows demons aren't actual planners but embodiments of their concept who feed on said emotion.

We also have seen a Pride Demon in Sophia Dryden and she just chills out once she leaves Warden's Keep.

A rage demon might want to KILL EVERYTHING.

But a Sloth Demon probably just wants to vegetate with a bunch of dreaming slaves.

Pretty much this.

It's why Wynne is such an annoying Pollyanna.

She has faith in everyone.

I think the Elder One is a 'new' Old God if that makes sense. At the very least it's the strongest of the Forbidden Ones.

I highly doubt the Formless One is the same entity as the Elder One.

I have three hopes

1. If it's an Old God, it's Dumat.

2. If it's not an Old God, I hope it's a very powerful demon.

3. If it's not any of these, I hope it's not an Elven God

and 4.

4. I'd be entirely cool if the Elder One was just a particularly nasty wizard.

Wishful thinking. I suspect that Formless One has been going by the name of Flemeth after it mind raped the real Flemeth back in the Towers Age.

Thinking more clearly, I think I was thinking of Alexius. Sorry. (Also, while this is kinda subjective, this doesn't look like a final boss. It looks more like an act boss or a Very Definitely Final Dungeon obstacle.)

Wha? You lost me.

I saw an actual humanoid with green light on his skin in one of the trailers and guessed it was the final boss. Thinking more clearly I'm pretty sure he's the boss at Redcliffe who taught Dorian. (Also, the thing you'd thought I mistook for the Final Boss just doesn't look like a Final Boss to me.)
