Merrill is someone I usually feel awful about being mean and her personal quest even in a best case situation still is a downer. I like to think that Merrill can change and grow out of it. Even if she is/was a blood mage it didn't drive Merrill crazy like the Huon elf guy. I also admit to having a soft spot for due to her also being the nicest party member. Even if she is a blood mage she not an abomination, also how do the templars not notice her?
Mages or Templars?

I suppose that could work... have a healer in every city with 4-5 Templars stationed inside the hospital and watching them at all times. I don't have a problem with that at all, so long as they've passed their Harrowing. It might require training additonal Templars overall since they'd be spread out more than normal and dedicated solely to watching one mage, but that shouldn't be a problem.
Maybe a few more Templars, especially if they are spirit healers. Those guys flirt with the Fade way to easily. Great power is available to them, but it could so easily lead to demonic possession.

Hm... and here I thought I was being cautious.
Would 8 be sufficient? Perhaps 10? You do realized that training these additional Templars will be coming out of the Chantry's coffers, correct? We may need to work the Tranquil extra hard to finance this venture... but in the wake of the Fade Crisis coming, there will definitely be a market for enchanted weapons and armor...

Yeah that's not going to cause any problems. One mage to heal a whole city. Well it's a good thing they aren't people so when one drops dead from exhaustion all the templars have to do is just pick out a new one to replace it and worked that one to death too.

One mage on hand is better than none, right? I never said it would be a 24 hour a day job, just something to supplement the current system of using poultices for everything... Besides, I was agreeing with somebody who wanted mages to have a permanent place outside the Tower. I never said anything about working them to death.

As Anders shows, even a single mage can potentially change a lot for a people. The destitute in Darktown were extremely protective of him and that's explained as how he avoided the Templars all these years in Kirkwall.

I never said I played a logical Hawk or Warden. If she didn't have Varric and Isabela looking out for she probably would of been caught in act one.

The **** life you want for mages they are better off dead. Not even really living a life. Just breathing which isn't living. So just being taken out to heal a few people before being shoved back in a dark cell to wait to be useful again is a **** life.

Maybe you should go back and read my posts (I'd say re-read but clearly you just skimmed them the first time). At no point did I mention anything about a cell, forced labor, or working anyone to death, and this isn't even my idea. If you are in favor of total freedom, then just say that instead of trying to put words in my mouth.

At the very least, I don't see much problem letting mages who wish to heal be allowed to serve in hospitals or the army so long as they have a templar escort at all times. Or, if you allow them to serve a lord or noble, you can gain revenue for the Circle for that mage's efforts.

I am just calling the Circle what it is. If you are in favor of the Circle this is what you are in favor of. And yes I think mages should have a hell of a lot more freedom than they have. Be allowed out in the world where they can do some good. Be allowed to make decisions for themselves.

Oh, I know lol. It's just that spirit healers are so powerful. But 4 or 5 is probably fine.

I dunno man... I'm actually kind of worried now. Let's compromise and say 5, but have 2 extras on standby in the city guard office. One for backup and the other to run like hell and get reinforcements if something goes wrong. Just to be safe, you understand. ![]()

It may surprise you but I actually consider myself more of a moderate... I'd like to see some serious reforms in the Circle system, but I do not agree with total freedom. That sounds far too risky when you consider all of the baggage that comes with being born a mage and how badly things could turn out. Ultimately we may be forced to decide between one extreme or the other, and if that happens I will (usually) side with the Templars. So... I mean, I am not totally blind to the problems of the system, it's just that we don't have anything better lined up. That's why I'm willing to at least discuss changes to the old system... so long as things don't go overboard, I'm open to new ideas. Limited freedoms are worth consideration, unlimited freedom, no way.

If that is the case maybe they should just do what Orisno said, "Drowned them all as infants," Because that is likely what will happen with the templars. To make sure they don't have problems with mages again, the will kill every mage they can find than hunt down and kill every person who has had a mage in their family.

5 years of "MAGES or TEMPLARS? Who will YOU choose?
Can't I just ****** choose and have it be final? This is by far the most tired storyline I have ever seen in a Bioware game.

Mages:
We are allowed visitation by family
Allowed to leave tower for business
All fields of study except blood magic
Harrowing is kept
Right of tranq is kept
Allowed marrige to other magi/or templar
Templars:
Higher moral standard
Better education and communication with magi
Better training for the odd abomination and blood mage
Knight commanders regularly consult first enchanters on apprentices
Templars are held accountable for abuses
Keep phylacteries
Is this fair? It seems to favor magi but im open to changes. I hope to make a ideal circle

Personally, I think the former Circle was less restrictive... at least those mages were able to choose what to study and how to use their magic. I am fine with having volunteers go out into the world as healers, but forcing everyone to follow that path and having the rest of the world take advantage of that doesn't feel right. They should be allowed to refuse to go to war or heal people if they don't want to...
ideas on improvements
-snip-
I don't have a problem with any of that... the main issues are giving mages more contact with the outside world and holding the Templars accountable for abusing their charges. If those issues are dealt with, we've already prevented Kirkwall from happening again, which is what I'm mainly interested in.

It's a big issue and has no easy solution. It's actually pretty realistic that it's still an issue despite multiple attempts to try and solve it.
