Because the Qunari won't sell me gun powder or cannons and I'm not sure if anyone other then the dwarfs or qunari would know how to make the metal strong enough to endure the pressures.

Conventional field artillery still exists in DA without the need for Gatlock.

Ballistia, Trebuchets, Catapults, these things are presumably employed by every military in Thedas.

sounds like my uncle tell em monkey sent you

The nice thing is that the lore already backs up the notion that mages can be effective stand ins for qunari cannons. It's what was used to combat them during the first invasion after all. I wonder if horses were employed though. One of the funner combat mechanisms I can think of is a group of mounted mages that ride around the battlefield delivering large burst of artillery fire where the enemy in densest and then moving on to another location. Their goal wouldn't be to kill the enemy exactly but rather to make it impossible for them to group up. In the mean time your ground troops could move in units to clean up the dispersed enemy soldiers.

All the reasons that you left off from your quote still apply. Besides those things apparently weren't enough to counter the qunari cannons. I want something at least that good.

They weren't relevant to the point i was making.

Beyond that, Qunari Gatlock appears to have its own short comings, given that its only ever been used in either bombs or ship mounted canon.

Aka they don't have a viable method of transporting a land based projectile version, so in the field?

You would have artillery, and they wouldn't.

If there's DLC where we play the Warden, giving her a My Little Pony Mount gets her to reconcile with the Warden as a LI.

:-)

Cassandra I'm torn would either approve or VERY DEEPLY disapprove.

So you believe that the qunari cannons the mages were used to counter in the invasion were all ship mounted? For me to believe that I'd have to see a piece of lore that mentions qunari never made use of cannons in their fortifications but kept them to ships. Though the image of a bunch of mages selling around on ships fighting naval battles is an amusing one. They'd probably do well at naval warfare where heavy armor can be a serious liability.

When i said I like artillery though I wasn't just talking about when fighting qunari. Now having mages isn't any reason not to use a ballista. I see no reason not to have both but I do consider mages the superior artillery in terms of immediate destructive potential, mobility, conceal ability and versatility.  I can't pull my ballista back from the front line and have it heal my wounded.

Death comes upon a pink steed. That sounds like something Discworld's Death would do. He's a funny fellow though.

All they were used for was naval warfare and obliterating coastal walls and defenses, read WOT and the codexs on the Qunari War.

They were never made use of outside of a place near a body of water.

It is.

Ballistae also do not have the possibility of becoming possessed during the middle of a battle.

I'm kind of disappointed in Bog Unicorn.

I was hoping for something a little less overtly evil.

Regular mounts don't have the same cool factor, though.

I reserve the right to be disappointed when I see it, but that hasn't happened yet.

Edit after googling: Where precisely was that while I was playing my Elven Magister Warden-Commander?

It worked out fine during the qunari invasion and the blights mages have been involved in. I didn't see any of the circle mages turning into abominations during the fall of ostagar and I don't recall any from the gallows except for Orsino and that was more a magic ritual that produced an undead then an abomination. We haven't even seen any of the mages from the Imperium turn into abominations even during losing combat situations. I'll take my chances. I believe the risk are grossly exaggerated and if I'm lucky and they do turn they'll be more interested in the enemy soldiers then mine or I can turn my remaining mages or ballista on them.
