I thought they barely could phrase things -- and that was only with the Lady of the Forest's help. The feral side dominates otherwise.

They are useful though... but I wouldn't say more than the elves. At least not to me, I liked the ranged fighters for the final Archdemon battle.

But I wouldn't mind seeing them again. Just not in such a casual way... like chilling out, with other Advisors.

Ah, but would it be fun to watch our spymaster play ball with one of them. ^_^

So we have...

Humans. Stereotypic European humans and then the Rivani which are the "other" more tribal humans. Avvar are the Barbarian sub-set.

Dwarves. We have the Dwarfy dwarves of Orzammar, the Darker Dwarves of Kal-Sharok,  the gnome-like/halfling (Dwarf-lite) Surfacers, and the newly mentioned Sea Captain Dwarves in WoT2 from the West.

Elves. We have the High Elves (Solas, Abelas), we have the Wood Elves (Dalish), we have half-Elves (City Elves, think about it). We don't really have Dark Elves, but I'm getting to the Dark in a second.

Beast. We have the Qunari, who are sometimes referred to as Giants and Ox-men. They are kind of a cross between a minotaur race and a lizard (argonian) race. They are the main "other" of the series. The Kossith seem to be the more savage extreme of the trope, but we don't know, they could have been more cultured and magicky (High Elf style) and the Qunari would still not like them. We also have the Fex, who might fill the niche of the primitive Beast race. We've even had werewolves.

Darklings. Darkspawn, duh, provide a re-imagining of the Dark Elf, Dark Human, and Orc trope. They are the corrupted version of each race.

Fae. Spirits, of course, of which we have a lot of varieties. We have ents (Sylvans), dryads (Lady of the Forest), full fae (Cole), were creatures, we even have god-touched mortals (Wynne, Anders, etc). The Elves are even hinted at being a Fae race (their ears point to the Fade, their blood is better for magical blood rites, etc). We even have the Elven Gods.

Personally, I prefer what they are doing. They take the typical races in fantasy and strip them down to their roots. What really is the difference between a High Elf and a Wood Elf? If Elves are mutable, why do they really need sub-races, and not just sub-cultures? What would a new beast-race offer that the Qunari don't? There are a lot of races and cultures already in Thedas, and I'm not entirely sure we always need a new race, when the same thing could be accomplished by introducing a new culture of an existing race or by throwing spirit mutation into the mix (werewolves).

Very well put and I agree with your assessment! (Still ...... those sea captain dwarves sound interesting to me?)

The only new idea I've seem that interested me is the "Snakeman"

This is an example of how I'd like them to look.

I don't know about a snake head. Wouldn't you prefer a snake body like Bleu from Breath of Fire?

Totally making me think of this now...

Lamias? I wouldn't object but I was propsing something closer in look to the  "serpent kings" Jaws of Hakkon hinted at.

I don't recall the reference at the moment, but might "serpent kings" have been a poetic way to describe dragons?  Or their worshipers?

I remember someone posting screen caps of a glyph depicting the serpent kings in another topic, but I can't remember the name of the topic.

To answer your question though, I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case but the glyph I speak of look more like the picture I posted earlier.

Interesting I wasn't really paying attention to any of the codex entries in Hakkon and missed this Serpent Kings business.

I don't know how the naga tail would work, but what about a human like face and cobra caller?

Bioware created the Fex way back during the production of DA2. Too bad they never said what they were or looked like. Kind of pointless to bring up a new race, then completely drop them and we know absolutely nothing about.

Cat-like race you say? I would've liked to see a charr-like race from GW2, which could basically be DA's version of the krogan.

Spoiler

I suppose the Qunari can function as DA's krogan but... idk... they feel too... civilized?

I always thought qunari were like a magically created humanoid/dragon hybrid species (since some dragons have horns), the kossith having possibly gone too far down one path or the other causing some to break away (whatever they are they look alot like tieflings).

With regard to the fex - I kinda hope they're not a beast race like cat people, don't know what I do want them to be, but I'm not keen on that. Not if its anything like the cat races in other games.

As for what a new race might look like..

"On the second day she drowned the giants of the sea, except those in deep waters, for they were to well-wrought, and Pride stopped her hand."

- Excerpt from the codex entry: The Ascension of Ghilan'nain in the Temple of Mythal

There could be all sorts of things down there including a sentient aquatic race. Just sayin'.

I wouldn't mind if we are about to get qunari invasion and all of a sudden some new race comes in and kicks the poop out of both side
