This is something I aways notice when it comes to the DA fandom. That players many times will overlook our companions crimes and mistakes mostly just because they are our companions. Because let's face it, if they were mere NPCs rather then our companions, most players wouldn't think twice before throwing an knife to their faces for their wrong doings. And in some cases they will even try to justify them.

So I wonder, if in Inquisition one of our companions were to do something that normally we would find outrageous, would you punish them for it just like you would for anyone else, or would you let them get away with it because they are one of your companions?

Considering people in the Scuttlebutt want to kill Hawke for what happened in DA2, but Varric gets a free pass because he is cool, I think your assertions are correct.

Such a thing NEVER happens in real-life!

If some of the fan speculation about Varric is correct (DA:I's Judas), he will share Ander's fate in my playthrough.

Phew...I was afraid this topic would be about the chosen romance lol

Well usually , I feel like it is opposite no ? That if an NPC does wrong...we can easely shrug it off because it doesn't impact us . While if it is someone we call a friend or companion or lover.....it would hurt deeply and on many level .

I personaly don't like the word punishement . I mean , if someone betray you and put your life in danger or the life of those you love in danger . You can kill them , exile them from your existance or listen to/if there is any good reason behind doing so .

I wouldn't take the stance of being morraly perfect . Because mistakes are part of who we are . Some peoples have reasons to do certains thing in a way , even if we may not agree with it or think we will do it better .

But I like to draw a line . I can tolerate many many mistakes . But there is always a limit . So in the end...it all depand on what did they do that is outrageous . What mood I'm in when I find about it . And just how bad it is .

People in RL who are otherwise sane and rationale have been known to protect family, friends, and loved ones who have committed horrible crimes they'd otherwise condemn in strangers.

If it was possible, the first time Fenris mouths off to Merrill about being a Mage I would have vapourised him on the spot....but alas that is not an option. (grumble grumble)

I guess it depends on the companion and whether the PC would have done something similar on their own...  in the past, it's been the companions I didn't like that have done these kinds of things...

Wow, that's some reaction.  And people criticize the guy for being wary of mages... -_-

Honestly depends on the situations. Anders yeah i considered it. Thought about awakening and howd he changed but i thought a better punishment to have him live with what he done.
I have a standing rule: avoid a fight or death if possible.

I agree that a lot of players overlook companions' crimes. Luckily, I'm not a lot of players. I think being someone who originally recruited Loghain has given me perspective when it comes to evaluating and judging companions justly. Isabela for example... I'm a fan. She was my Hawke's love interest. But she is no less culpable for the Qunari invasion than the Arishok's recklessness, the Viscount's impotence, and the Grand Cleric's apathy. She does not get her ship in Act III.

Well iron bull is a spy who kills for a living and for money, Sera is a bandit robin hood type, Viv is a class climber, Cullen has done questionable things(so has leliana for that matter) so i think we are going to see much of the same as we see with DA2.

A man approaches Confucius.

Man: In our province, men are so loyal to the state they turn their own father in for thievery.

Confucius: In our land, boys respect their fathers more.

You have to have loyalty to those who fight by your side.

I think that's because you see the intentions and reasoning behind the companions more than other characters. I usually point to Sayid from LOST when something like this comes up. The majority of his actions are horrendous crimes, and yet he is usually pretty well-meaning, or regretful. It's true when people say that most see themselves the hero of their own story.

You get to know your companions more, hear their stories and better understand their reasons for doing things. You have the time and chance to empathize with them. It's like how you would more harshly judge a stranger than a friend, yes it's bias but it happens all the time.
