You didn't see the BSN a few years ago.  I wasn't around myself, just read some of the archived threads, but it had sadly earned a bad reputation for being a rather toxic community.  I'm very happy to see how much it's changed.

ME3 was a dark, dark time in this forum...fortunately, I didn't have too much trouble with the DA2 stuff, although if I had to hear someone whine about Anders hitting on them again, I was gonna cut a fool.

Oh man that whining about the rivalry points.

And then I'd point out you got more from Fenris for being a mage but that didn't count apparently.

I recently played a pro-mage (more pro-circle) male mage playthrough and I don't recall getting hit on once by Anders.

Oh that's right... I never hit the flirt button...

What are you trying to claim here Bugsie ? I'm straight, so obviously I never touched the heart button with Anders or any male LI, and yet Anders was hitting on me and I got rivalry points because my Hawk ( male ) with the dominant tone was quite rude about it. ( that's what I felt at least ) I never was bothered, but if you are saying that it doesn't happen unless you did something with the flirt button, this isn't true. It happens.

I've been around the BSN since...before Mass Effect 2 at least. There's a reason I have less than 200 posts.

He hits on you if you pick diplomatic answers after the Karl quest whether you flirt with him or not. You can pick the silly answers to skip his flirt and not get rivalry.

Ha, thank you ! Yep, I never once flirted with Anders. Being diplomatic is quite different lol.

Also, good to know how it works !

No, not saying it doesn't happen, but to get max rivalry points you have to hit the heart twice then reject him (15 points). If you reject him the first or second time aggressively it's only 10 points and if you laugh it off, just 5. So in order to avoid the 15 point rivalry don't hit the the damn heart. Like Ryz says you get more rivalry elsewhere so I fail to see it as a valid excuse to go mental about him flirting first. I got more rivalry points from Fenris and making the mistake offering him that damn Tevinter sword than anyone/anything else, even Carver (from memory) all just for being a mage.

The flirt is also fairly innocent, and from memory he is almost embarrassed for having those feelings.

The problem with the Anders flirting with you if you are diplomatic is that though you turn him down politely, his reply has a very negative tone. That's where a lot of the anger at that scene comes from I think.

At one point in the conversation with him, your only options are flirt, flirt, and broken heart icon ("I don't want you thinking about me that way!   ") I'm guessing it gets to that if you pick mostly diplomatic choices but you don't have a way to know that in game, you aren't leading him on or anything. I usually just pick one of the flirts and just leave it at that. It's not like it means you have to be in a relationship with him.

That's because he's kind of a whiner. I've turned him down every time, and I still end up at max Friendship by Act II. I don't get the insanity over that scene.

I don't think the "turn him down" option is very polite; Hawke acts freaked out and disgusted. (Male Hawke, anyway.)

Yeah, this is true. When I turned him down on my female Hawke all she said was "I'd rather you not think of me that way" or something similar, expressed quite politely.  Male Hawke reacts far more rudely in comparison, though the exact words escape me right now.

Btw, it's worth noting he gave my fem Hawke rivalry points for that too. It didn't bother me though...some people are sensitive like that, so I was just like w/e and moved on. In any case it's so easy to friend Anders that something like that can't even be a gameplay issue. I'd like to believe otherwise, but it just seems it's an excuse used by a few to bash the one same sex flirt that is not done by a female.

Yeah I don't mind the rivalry points at all! Silly dude got his feelings hurt, poor guy lol It's just the rude response I was forced to give. I hated that. I mean Hawke acted like he was homophobic! Then he turns around and hits on Fenris. Like, okay lol

Yep.

I mean it's not that shocking that clingy Anders hits on the person being nice and sympathetic.

(that said the hearbtreak option is a bit rude on Dude Hawke's end).

It doesn't sound anymore polite as a female Hawke.  Maybe slightly less caustic, but it did bother me that the answer was not, "I'm sorry, you're just not my type."  Instead we got a pretty rude response to say to him.

You know I only came to know about the Anders flirt drama from the forums because I hadn't by that point done a playthrough with a diplomatic Hawke. I remember reloading an old save (I save a lot so had one at a handy spot in game) to see what the fuss was about and was repulsed by how a male Hawke reacted. Suffice it to say I went out of my way to avoid choosing that diplomatic option if at all possible. My Hawkes aren't homophobic and I don't need them reacting like that.  It's a pity cos the diplo option is probably the ideal response to give in that situation.

They were vastly different from what I remember. The main difference to my eyes were that fem Hawke turns him down sharply (but not rudely at all IMO) whereas male Hawke acts positively repulsed by the very notion.

I was just looking at the wiki again. The max rivalry you can gain is 15 and that is offset by 5-10 friendship points when you click on an earlier flirt.

@Ina If you never press the flirt button, Male Hawke doesn't sound homophobic at all, you turning him down in the first instant is exactly the same as Female Hawke's response to turning him down. In addition you get no rivalry points. He does sound mean if you continue to flirt then turn him down, but only a mean Hawke would lead someone on with flirting then being rude to them.

If someone is nice to me and flirty then aggressively rude, I'd give them real life rivalry points too!

I don't know, but for all the people on this forum wanting companions who think for themselves, have independent emotions and for them to react accordingly to a PC who's maybe sarcastic/flippant or aggressive and mean, there seems to be a number who get mighty annoyed when the companions show that they are indeed a fully formed character with thoughts and feelings of their own.

I can understand people finding an aggressive (and possibly homophobic) sounding Hawke to be annoying if they were choosing all diplomatic responses and didn't want to end up flirting with Anders.

But, that being said, I think people are really overreacting with this.  You can avoid flirting with him.  You can avoid all rivalry points.  Just not together without an aggressive line from Hawke.  Even if you do end up with rivalry points, you more than make up for those points elsewhere with Anders.  I don't understand the big deal.  I can't tell you how many lines I hate from both Shepard and Hawke, but I've decided that either: a.) I choose those lines and shrug it off; or b.) I don't choose those lines and take whatever rivalry/renegade/whatever points come with it.

I do agree that the people who complain that the characters are independent thinkers and should not be "playersexual" and have minds of their own and blah blah blah.......those people should like this.  This is a notoriously moody character whose entire storyline is his slow descent from jovial carefree guy to obsessed and reactionary activist.  Why again are people surprised that he doesn't respond well to your rejection of him?

The only thing I know for sure is that it's going to probably be a long time before the writers decide ever again to have the companion hit on the player first.

I kind of want them to do it anyways, cause I don't mind being hit on by people lol. I certainly can see Iron Bull hitting on all the players when we first meet him.

I'd like to see it as well, but due to the Anders backlash, I doubt they are going to have that happen for a game or two down the road.

In all honesty, my only response to those people is to suck it up. My sense, and correct me if I'm wrong, is that it probably wouldn't have been such a big deal if it had not been a guy hitting on another guy.
