I don't really recall a lot of french words that I couldn't figure out what meant by the context clues.

But to answer your question yes both will be in DAI.

Yea, after the Masked Empire it will take an AMAZING amount to persuade me to side with Celene.

Team Gaspard all the way.

Well, he is a criple now, so if I slap him in the face with a glove and claim he has impugned my honor, it shouldn't be that hard.....

Give Gaspard some time.  I hated him at first because he was messing with my homeboy Teagan.  And nobody messes with Teagan, no-o-o-obody!

But holy crap does Gaspard grow on you.  Team Gaspard 4 Lyfe.

He even paid to rebuild a warehouse that Celene's supporters burnt down.

For an Elf!

He has an odd set of morals, but his honor is absolute.

He has every reason in the world to employ a champion now you realize?

Though if he would actually use one, then again whom is to say he couldn't be on the mend? He assumes Michel ended his fighting career, but when it comes to magic? Who can say, he had one Apostate in his employee, why not more?

Read the rest of the book, and you'll want to hug Gaspard and kill Celene with fire.

Seriously, do it.

I am truly amazed at the virulence with which people support one and hate the other.  Especially when the very things they hate one for are demonstrated just as much if not more by the other.  They are largely two sides of the same coin.  Both willing to do just about anything for power.  The primary difference being Gaspard is a traditionalist while Celene pushes reforms.  Gaspard is imperialistic and Celene promotes cultural growth making Orlais the cultural center of the world.

Typing all that I would normally side with tradition and military, but I am currently on team Celene.

I'm only about two thirds of the way through Masked Empire, but as I keep going I grow to like Gaspard more and more and consequently despise Celene and Briala.

The turning point for me was when:

Spoiler

Yeah, so I'm pretty much becoming Team Gaspard.

Oh, I'm well aware Gaspard is evil.

And no better than Celene in most respects.

How his evil MANIFESTS is different, though.

Celene is an ultra-hippie liberal who will turn on the oppressed she ostensibly champions the moment it's inconvenient.

Gaspard is a brutal autocratic dictator who will turn on his ALLIES even when it's inconvenient for HonorTM.

Gaspard has an alien morality to me but I respect he has integrity.

While Celene has none.

Basically, Gaspard is Sten.

Celene is Anora.

Or not. I liked Celene to start with and still do. I respect Gaspard and see their similarities, but I have no illusions about who wants what for Orlais and how they view elves.

He even paid to rebuild a warehouse that Celene's supporters burnt down.

For an Elf!

He has an odd set of morals, but his honor is absolute.

And he also states he would rather just give him a knife in the back but politically it made more sense to be seen by the other elves as helping the warehouse owner.

Exactly. Celene professed she was an ally to the elves, but as soon as that became politically inconvenient...what did she do at Halamshiral? I completely agree with your assessment of both the characters. Even though Gaspard has plenty of terrible qualities, he is much less of a hypocrite than Celene so that is why I like him more.

Like Sten, Gaspard may invade a country we like (Fereldan) some day and probably is planning on it any time now. However, as monstrous as this war is likely to be, I at least understand he's going to be doing it within a certain code.

Celene, again, is like Anora. She's very-very good at her job.

But if her job requires betraying the Warden/Inquisitor, I see no problem with her doing so.

It's really a choice of evils.

Do we want Artsy-Pretty Flower Arranging Orlais that acts like Cersei Lannister and Littlefinger? Maybe a little Highgarden too.

Or do we want Tywin Lannister and Stannis brutal military dictatorship Orlais that holds itself to honor? (Not that Tywin ever did).

Ewww, people actually like Gaspard? He is a Magnificent Bastard, I'll give him that but I'm still going to enjoy killing him. Then again, I might consider sparing him for the good of the empire if its an option like it was for Loghain. At least he does honor his word, even when its foolish.

Celene is Anora.

Gaspard himself says that his honor only extends to warfare and that such constraints don't matter in politics. He attempts to assassinate Celene on a hunting trip and then rebels and ambushes her his rightful empress just because he is power hungry.  Which would I rather have in a battle as an ally-Gaspard hands down, but Celene will at least try and attempt reforms, I am not going to hold her being a political realist against her, Gaspard forced her hand.

A better comparison is Gaspard is Logain and Celene is Justinia.

Gaspard might not betray you in battle, but he has no such scruples in politics.  Heck, he threatened to put a whole city to the torch if the one guy didn't tell him where Celene fled to.  Its war and all, but people need to listen to Gaspard's own words when referring to the incident with Teagan, his honor only applies to combat.

I did, Gaspard would murder elves just as readily as he would help elves if it furthers his own goals. He has little interest in politics and would be a tyrannical warmonger as emperor.

I dunno, I trust Briala's judgement, that

I'd rather kill Gaspard AND Celene but I doubt that's an option.

He views War as a unifying event and he isn't wrong.

Had Orlais invaded Fereldan, i do believe the issues of the white spire would have never occurred, the mages and templars would be too busy fighting a war in Fereldan to be fighting each other.

And Gaspard would kill elves, but he has never claimed he was a social reformer, he isn't.

He doesn't lie or hide behind promises of aid or assistance, He is what he is, and that honesty is what appeals to a lot of people, sure he will be an Emperor, but he will be an honest one.
