The earth government did have it coming but not it's people. Added, after the war ended the actions of Zeon made the earths government Alienate Spacenoids even more and the war crushed the lives and potential for millions of innocents.
Was the deaths of so many lives worth it? In the end due to "the box" the fight became pointless.
