(or give Orlais over entirely to the Dalish if she can).
lol.

Gaspard himself, you know the guy who is trying to kill her and replace her at empress, says that he has never been and will never be a match for her in the game.
He's probably just being humble.
Considering he plays her like a fiddle the entire book.

I think part of that was luck actually. I.E. Gaspard didn't know that Briala and Celene were actually lovers when he had Andraste and Shartan be lovers in that play if I recall (with both parts being played by women). I think that scene alone probably freaked Celene out as she thought her relationship with Briala was secret and so overcompensated in her next move to try to counter the backlash against her from that play.
Either way, it's one thing to play the game to get power, but it's another to keep the power you gained as others will try to steal it from you.

He didn't know, but he did know she was being soft on the elves though.
That was hardly a secret, he used it a tool she gave him, and it happened to be more effective then he would have guessed, but never the less.
It was a tool Celene gave him because she was soft on elves.

I have and I think both of them need to be killed with fire. Gaspard is just a bad as Celene but for different reasons.
Briala also needs to be killed with fire as well in my opinion.
But.. "killing with fire" is too much like the games. lol. These novels have better ways to develop a plot. (imo) I like the politics and intrigue.
I wonder what would happen if a group of elves put on a street performance openly mocking Andraste...
I would have pushed the Divine to have the play's performers and those who commissioned it excommunicated. Then I would have them charged with heresy and executed.
I'm only about two thirds of the way through Masked Empire, but as I keep going I grow to like Gaspard more and more and consequently despise Celene and Briala.
The turning point for me was when:
Spoiler
Yeah, so I'm pretty much becoming Team Gaspard.
You doubt the Dalish would kill them? really?
Do I blame them, no but I do not see how can you pin that on Celene.
It would be fun. Topple Orlais and give it to the elves! Replace the silly hats with silly wood carvings.lol.
We will probably be able to hunt them to extinction in DAI... >.>
You think so? That'd be great!
And while we're on the topic... people need stop referring to Celene's actions as genocide... Stopping the rebellion was not genocide.
Article II: In the present Convention, genocide means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such:(a) Killing members of the group;
(Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group;
© Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part;
(d) Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group;
(e) Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.http://www.genocidew...e/whatisit.html
I think murdering a signifiant portion (thousands) of the Elven population of a city certainly qualifies. They are a racial minority. The intention was to end the rebellion by destroying most of the participants, i.e. committing genocide.
actually just racial, the elves were andrastian

Bunch of hippies!
Killing elves is always a positive!
Allright, it's been a while since I read the book.
I think Celene killing Briala's parents was also pretty damning. You have to be pretty cold-hearted to sleep with someone for years, with such a horrible secret.

This guy gets it.
Killing elves is like killing cultists. Makes me feel like I'm tidying up Thedas.

The bigotry in this thread....
You say that like it's a bad thing. You do realize that BioWare and most of their fans fall into the camp of liberals--myself included--right?
I take offense to that assertion.
I am no Liberal.

I have to wonder why on Earth you're playing Dragon Age games, then.
