I wish I could enjoy playing the opposite gender, but I just can't seem to get into it. I have tried several games playing as the male protagonist but never finishing much past the beginning of the game. I guess for me with RPGs I roleplay myself to a certain extent into my character and that always ends up playing as a female. I know I have missed out on some good games because a female was never available as a gender option.
Are you going to try to RP a different gender for a LI?

It really depends on how much the VA annoys me.

My first play through will be as a male. Though at some point i plan on playing through as a female. After playing through the mass effect games as male shepard multiple times i quite enjoyed playing through as femshep.

Depends on the person.
I'm transgender woman, I've spent most of my life trying to be the man I am not and everyone told me I was and expected me to be. If I play a man in a game it's more of me pretending to be a man, which is the nightmare of my life. So in that respect I think my not wanting to play the role of a man again makes a lot of sense.
I'm sure others have other reasons, each personal.
I guess I understand where you are coming from there. However as I said for me I never put much of myself into the character. But mad probs to you. Glad to hear you are being who you are.

I prefer playing male but I'll play as a female PC. Doesn't bother me much. I even ended up preferring my femshep to my maleshep.
Also playing as a lady inquisitior is probably the only thing that will stop me from romancing Dorian again on my 2nd playthrough.

The original question is a little wedded to the gender binary, so it's difficult to answer. I prefer to play male characters, and that won't change with DAI. I've successfully played female characters in DA2 but not DAO or Mass Effect (also, not BioWare, but also Skyrim). I've tried but I lose interest in the character pretty quickly, and a game that had previously felt amazing now feels flat.
Fair enough. I'll reedit the thread title. ![]()
Edited the thread title to be less gender binary. I hope that works for you.

No, but not because I don't like playing a different gender. In fact, I like it a lot and my canon Hawke is a guy - I'm a woman. So I'll be playing men as well as women in Inquisition but not because of LIs.

Just for the love interests? Probably not. Oddly enough, Sera, Cullen, Solas and Cassie aren't my favorites (Blackwall is up there, though).
But I'll play a dudeQuizzie eventually, for what are probably pretty normal reasons -- because story, because he'll be the prettiest, because I suspect playing a male qunari will be vaguely hilarious and lead to my getting stuck in a door at least once, which is the minor harmless amusement that makes any gaming experience for me. Probably my third playthrough.
The big question is "Will I play an elf for love interests?"
And the answer is "Not right away. But probably sooner or later. Emphasis on later. Possibly never."

Yes i will play a different gender (a female character), but no, it won't because of, and i won't pursue a romance.

Yeah I find it seriously hard to play males now. I spent my entire life trying to successfully do just that before accepting myself, and now the idea of trying to do it again is just... well not particularly a thing I enjoy. I've found it harder and harder to play males, unless I have a crush on the male character in question... I'm much more comfortable and happy finally being and playing as the girl I've accepted myself to be.
My non reluctance in playing opposite gender comes from my not looking at the character as myself. I'm not roleplaying, I'm just playing to see the content from a different characters perspective. You're right, everyone plays their own way, so that's ov course, just me.

It's not that I see the character as myself. It's that I'm a female forced to play as a male for so long, playing as a male is just too familiar and uncomfortable. It's me playing a male again. My female characters are all very different, and only have bits of me in them, but they don't have that distasteful familiarity of playing the male.

Funny enough, I prefer playing as a female character, but I finished my first playthrough of Origins as a male character with a m/m romance.
So, yeah. I already have a m/m romance thought up. I like to play many different characters, RP as them. It's like extending my grasp of the experience itself.

In orgins i was knid of iffy about it but i liked the Alistar romance. For Solas I'm making an expection and just doing it. I could listen to his VA read the phone book and be satisfied. That said while I'm thinking Solas might be my favorite LI, I still get the feeling I'll romance Dorian the most. I'm kind of meh about Cullen but maybe somewhere down the road.

For Dorian, anything. ![]()
But seriously, I will be giving them a shot. I'll probably do an Iron Bull and Cullen romance first as a female, but after that it's a free for all depending on who grabs me the most during those playthroughs and I'm not too bothered by having to have to play other genders or sexualities for it.

I always play at least one male character after having played enought of female ones. I have done so in DAO and ME for Morrigan and Jack. I'll do it again for Cassandra (the only female LI that have my attention) and maybe later for Dorian too.

I always create characters of both genders and more than happy to play as either, although male is always my first playthru. Will I intentionally create a character for the purpose of romancing Dorian...eventually...one day....when i get round to it. Don't really like same sex romance. Just a personal preference. Pleased its in there, but just not my thang

Same here. I'll definately play as both genders, but romances will be just incidental. I choose to roleplay females for different reasons than choosing romances.

I don't see the PC as "me", in fact I prefer to play someone different. If I wanted to roleplay a self-insert, I don't need an RPG for that.
