Are you going to try to RP a different gender for a LI?

I've never understood who pretty much self insert, not even just for the LI perspective. For one playthrough, maybe your first one, yeah, but all of them? That's boring as dicks.

Seriously, you can't man up and make a male bisexual elf with pro-mage tendencies? Or a female lesbian dwarf that has an aversion to nugs? How about a straight male qunari that has a fear of demons?

No?

Heterosexual female here, I will definitely RP a homosexual male Inquisitor for Dorian.

At least half of my Quizzies will be female, possibly more given the LI options.

Mainly interested in rolling females elves for Cullen and Solas, a female dwarf for Sera, and a female Qunari or human for Blackwall.

Though I'm probably going to focus on Dorian (male human or elf) and Iron Bull (male qunari or elf) first, both with male characters because it feels more natural to me. Will have het-male characters for Josephine (male human or dwarf) and Cass (male dwarf most likely) though.

Never minded playing the opposite gender since several of my canon or favorite PCs are female. Heck some of my favorite PCs I've played are men who romanced women (my Dwarf Commoner and Amell Warden). Never felt the need for my PC to (always) match my gender and/or orientation even though my first playthrough through a game often reflects that.

Forgive the snip, but I wanted thank you for one of the most...odd choice of words I've heard in awhile.   You get a like for that.   :P :D

If there is a tool, I for sure won’t leave my gender. I had to play as a male for a lot of games just to play and now that I can play not only as a female but as gay I am quite happy to miss out on a lot of content. If there is no tool I will need to see if there are any overwhelming reasons to want to play as a male, but my experience says those roles are not very interesting.

Hmm. Not that simple, though, really.

Imagine waking up every morning, looking down at yourself and sighing, "Not this again." Brush your teeth, put on make-up/shave... frown at your reflection. "Why this?" Closing your eyes and thinking, If only tomorrow I could be THAT. Putting on clothes for work, and making your selections based on whether you feel like a boy or a girl today. Feeling irritated that your body limits one or both of those expressions.

Then you discover a game: a game where you can be your fantasy self! Yes, ,yes, YES! Do what you want, be who you want, look how you want, love who you want ;) You've never BEEN so happy.

That's sort of what it's like. :D

No. I'm a straight man and I cannot relate to women and gay men in a sense that I really do not know how they think, their thought processes, etc.

Women and gay men think like people. And in a relationship, like people in love (or lust). Same as you really.

This game is going to have a lot of mileage for me, because I like to role-play all the genders/sexualities/races combinations that I can think of. There's too many possible story experiences here to gate myself.

I posted something similar in the other topic, but it's relevant so I'll be partly re-treading my other post.

I'm a stright male who likes to play all the genders and sexualities available. I very much love the ability to play a character not based on reality, but usually as a concept in my own head. I often treat it similarly to writing a character for a story, at least on a conceptual level. I tend to develop my character more organically as the game goes along, thus, I don't play different genders strictly based on the available LIs. That said, I will also on occasion play.... a kind of self-insert. Not truly one, to the letter, but a character based a little less on concepts floating in my head and a little more like my own personality.

I enjoy having the freedom to do any and all of these things.

I also realize that, as a stright male, I have more freedom than a lot of other people simply to do all of this. It isn't that hard for me to understand why a female gamer would want to exclusively play a female character. Same for non-straight gamers. And especially for transgender gamers. For a lot of them, the ability to play a character that more closely exemplefies how they identify themselves is often irresistably inviting.

At the end of the day, there isn't a wrong way to play. Someone who feels comfortable playing a different gender and sexuality every time isn't any more correct than someone who feels comfortable playing the exact same character every time. Or anything in between. It's part of why games like this that give the player such flexibility in creating their own character have so much appeal.

Really good post, certainly a virtual cookie for you.

This attitude might have helped many of the romance threads be a lot calmer (and a lot shorter!).

Thank you. It's a big reason I started posting on this board, actually. I don't post on forums often, but a topic on another forum in which the consensus was "Bioware hates their fanbase and crapped all over the only important player demographic (straight males) with the LIs in this game" was such an assault on my senses that I had to post something. I then came here in search of a little more rational discussion.

Also, the term "gay agenda" came up in that topic, which just makes me titter. Bioware and its gay agenda.... ruining gaming for the straight males!

Wait!  What did we do this time?  I love how the posters on that other board are blaming us and we're in the same boat as straight guys!  Gotta love that logic!

For all the foibles of the BioWare forum, this is a fairly sane place compared to some of the toxic locations out there...  :)

Like DAO and DA2 the majority of my characters are going to be queer women, although my 1st will be a straight male for Cassandra.

I've played different gender/sexuality combinations in both DAO and DA2 so will do again in DAI. I like creating different characters in such an rpg and I would personally find it boring if they were all female or all male or all straight etc. In a non rpg game, I prefer to stick with women only unless there's a compelling reason to play male.

My first playthrough of Origins - just finished! - was as a female city elf who ended up romancing Leliana - totally unplanned; I was going for Alistair - so, I will definitely roll up a female Inquisitor once I get my hands on Inquisition.

It's not about the romance for me though. At least not the first time around. I chose the female city elf origin for my first playthrough for the simple reason that saving my own self at the beginning was so much more badass than the usual 'damsel in distress' story and because the plight of the city elves really resonated with me. Next time, I'll play a male human for the sole purpose of romancing Morrigan - and being an ******* unlike my elf, but I think that comes as a package with romancing Morrigan.

Same deal with Inquisition. Right now, I'm dithering between starting my first playthrough as a female elf mage, female dwarf rogue and male Qunari warrior. Whatever I go with, I'll probably play a female Inquisitor at some point just to romance Sera - why is the only romancable elf also the only lesbian?

I'm going to be playing this game for a long time. Over the next few years, so I'll probably do everything at one point or another! They'd have to really screw it up for me to refuse to play it. And it'll take a lot to do that.

Sera is the only love interest that .. interests me pre-release. With that in mind, female elf quisitor shall slip on the sex hat.

Will he spend a lot of time polishing his horns?

Spangles. Horn rings. More horn rings. And the most elaborate braids I can manage. >>

I'm also pretty casual with makeup and fancy clothing and whatnot IRL, but I do enjoy it for some of my characters in vidja games.

Definitly want to; Cass and Dorian both seem to be awesome. And I do have that incomplete DAO game with male Amell, waiting to charm Morrigan....

But as I said in other topics, it's far easier to me play as female than male. Heck, it's far less trouble for me play as lesbian (having actually great time with my current Hawke who crushed on both Aveline and Isabela - talk about akwardness...) than playing male character. :?
