I don't think there was enough time in the expansion to romance anyone, really.
 

For those thinking that Anders could have made a good romance option - I have to disagree, I'm sorry! Dude's been on the run from Templars for many years, then almost had no other choice but to join Wardens, and while he shrugs off a year of solitairy confinement like it was a joke, that stuff is serious and robs one of emotional responsiveness towards  others. His banter gives out that Anders has to reconstruct his socialisation patterns from zero, is overwhelmed by the freedom and lives by the principles of "YOLO". TL;DR - no relationship material at all, one-nighter at best. Only thing that might stir up an emotion in him is a cat. Which is exactly why there's Ser Pounce-a-lot
 

As for Nathaniel, I hated him at first because he clawed and hissed at me, but later on became a fine example of how kindness can help a person get back up. It was a beautiful transition, but I wouldn't want to get romantically involved with someone who was planning to stab me in the back just a little while ago.

I admit my Cousland sent Nathaniel to the gallows in my first run at Awakening.  Then I thought, that's silly, he might have been useful, played agian, and I discovered that I really, really liked him.  I was filled with hope when I found out he was in DA2, but Bioware soon crushed that hope - they made him a cameo, and even got his eye colour wrong!  I still hope that some day they will make it up to me, but I'm not holding my breath.

Unlike most people on this site, I don't demand romances or go gaga over them. That being said, my apathy is applied in the other direction, so I don't have anything against adding more romances.

I wanted Nathaniel Howe as a romance option so bad. Finally a romance-able man who is not a blonde, DAO Alistair, Zevran two shades of blonde, DA2, Anders, Fenris two other shades of blonde. Come on Bioware brunettes are very hot... see Johnny Depp, Keanu Reeves, Orlando Bloom, Gerard Butler, etc. Even Tom Hiddleston is sexier as a Raven-haired beauty.

 

Oh and that other hot Brunette that Bioware keeps teasing us with and denying us Nathaniel Howe.

 

The Warden should have the right to go Brunette, especially if Alistair kicked her to the curb because she was a Mage and a Warden. In all seriousness I am still disappointed that Nathaniel cannot be romanced. I was hoping for Nathaniel, but he still to this day escapes with his chastity intact. (Ooops I said I was going to be serious.)

 

I have not played Inquisition yet, so I don't know if the Blonde Men Only rule is still in effect.

There's a quote out there somewhere that I'll never be able to find, but basically Gaider said that if they were going to have made any companion in Awakening romanceable, it would have been Nathaniel.

If Nathaniel had been a romance option in Awakening, my canon Warden might well have given Zev a reason to be jealous.

 

Having said that, I headcanon that Nathaniel isn't necessarily celibate.  He might not spend all his time chasing skirts, but I don't doubt he does his share of flirting.

100% yes! I thought killing him as soon as I saw him, but just because his father is a total arse, does not mean he would be too. I gave him the benefit of the doubt, and I'm glad I did. He was the total opposite of Rendon, and so adorable.

I would have loved him to be a romance option but considering you killed his father, deservedly or not, you did kill his father. I'm not sure that would have been a healthy relationship if he even wanted to in the first place. He might grow to like you in the end but that's probably going a little too far into forgiveness.

I think it would have been interesting if he ended up with Velanna. His flirting and chivalrous dialogue was starting to crack through her 'Eww, human" shell.

Anders was certainly flirting with him in the banter they had about robes XD

Anders felt like one from his banter, too.  He was like a human mage version of Zevran in Awakening.

I headcanon that my Warden kept trying to get in touch with Zevran throughout Awakening, getting more and more worried when he didn't hear back (and kept uncovering all the things the Crows were doing in Amaranthine, the plot against him, shipments of poison, etc., didn't help one bit)  In fact, part of the reason my Warden recruited Nathaniel was to have someone in charge while he was gone who had training in how to rule.  That, and he figured shemlen nobles were more likely to listen to one of their own than to an elvhen mage.

I can see that happening with my F!Cousland, too.  She knows who was and wasn't there when her family was murdered, she knows how hard it is to lose a father, and while she wouldn't blame him for wanting her dead, I think she'll come to respect him anyway.

Yes, I do wish he were a romance option. I enjoyed his development from enemy to skeptical subordinate to loyal friend. He had a good sense of humor ("Are you an admirer, Oghren?") and didn't let his tragic past make him bitter. Plus, his voice is wonderful. Every time he addressed Velanna as "my lady" I  was envious.

 

Nate has quite a bit of real estate in the Keep, which makes me hopeful he'll show up again in future games. Yes, he might be dead in some people's playthroughs, but dying in previous games didn't seem to stop Anders, Leliana, Flemeth or Morrigan from reappearing.

I think it's more he's a pale-skinned brunette (and the same hairstyle) than an actual resemblance, but he didn't look much like his dad, either, imo.

But yes, I would happily remain single in DAO if dear Nathaniel was romanceable in Awakenings.
