Hey folks,

The Mage vs. Templars thread has caused me to start work on a essay where I discuss the issues of Freedom vs. Security inherent in the Mages vs. Templars subject. I'm going to draw from a lot of the arguments made in the forums and try to treat the subject with as much seriousness as possible for a pair of fictional organizations.

I hope people will enjoy this essay, which will be multi-part and posted as I complete it. Your thoughts are welcome as I discuss the issue as are suggestions for issues to cover.

Part 1: Mages and Templars

Part 2: Tranquility, Harrowings, Blood Magic, and Terrorism

Part 3: The Chantry, Negotiation, and Consequence

Thanks everyone!

Looking forward to your insights!

Awesome read!  I think players that haven't played DA:O or DA2 and are looking to play Inquisition should read your blog.  I like how you deconstructed the problem and presented similarities that exist in real life.  I also didn't feel that you were leaning one way or the other, seems pretty unbiased.

Looking forward to reading part 2! :)

I think this essay might just change moderate stance or at least have me see things in more fair light

Good read. Other than disagreeing with you saying Wynne is possessed I agree with most of what you wrote.

Actually wynne is possessed by what she assumes is a spirt of faith or was it hope.

I'm curious now.  In which direction did you feel it was biased?  Towards the mages, towards the templars, which?

I loved this article. As a pro magi supporter and a fan of history, I found your parallels in history very intriguing. Keep up the good work.

Not by the definition of possession she isn't. She has a partnership with a spirit of faith. That is a very long way from being possessed.

Basically it is this.

If you are possessed by a demon/spirit---they are in control and for all intents and purposes you no longer exist.

Wynne is being supported by a spirit of Faith, but she is still who she was and the spirit isn't controlling her actions.

Well, she's merged with it but the spirit doesn't attempt to exert domination. Either way, it's inside her.

It seems a bit biased and inaccurate...

For example the Circle of Rivain was annulled because the mages literally left the circle.

They violated the single most important tenant of the circle: To Keep mages from the common people and vice versa.

Beyond that: Dragon Age 2's Kirkwall circle was LOST to corruption.

It's bloody first enchanter was a blood mage.

It seemed a little too focused on the abuses of the Templars and the sacrifices that mages have to endure.  It is also noticeably anti-Chantry.  Also, not once in all the times I played DA:O did I make a connection between Kelli's (or w/e that girl's name was) desire to be rid of her magic and homosexuality.  I think my mistake was expecting a more impartial view going in, so it's my own fault for being disappointed.

It did announce at the start it would be impartial :P

So the let down wasn't entirely self delivered.

Heh... well there is that.

In any case, I do appreciate the effort the OP put into writing all of this down, even if I disagree with a lot of it.

I encourage you to wait to read the part about mage terrorism, Blood Magic, and the stupidity of the Harrowing.
