I'm generally very meh on brothels on games. It doesn't add "realism" to me to have a few almost identical sexy women your male character can sleep with. It's absolutely fan service male gaze grossness where "realism" becomes flimsy justification.

Having said that, I adored the brothel in DA2. The dwarven man was my favorite,lmao. It was funny and didn't have gratuitous creepy sex scenes and had a variety of sex workers there. I'd be down for another version of that....I'm very pro sex work representation, but ...its gotta be good, not just cheap titiliation.

While my actual opinion on brothels is a solid 'meh', I would strangle someone else's mother (humans with mothers, take note: this is a crispy jokelike substance and not actually a threat in any form to anyone's mother) for the Black Emporium again. That thing was amazing. I mean, yes, free loot and laughs, but the mirror.

 

THE MIRROR. Do you even know how many hours of prologue play that thing saved me? Oh no, watching Hawke's animations, I realize that her hair actually makes her look like a yutz and her cheekbones belong on killer crickets from outer space! Have no fear, the mirror is here to save you from watching Carver or Bethany die a bajillion times until it's better.

And it would rock in Inquisition. For one thing, adding scars through the course of the story! Saw-eeeet!

 

Uh. To bring it back around. If there's a brothel, I'll probably roundly ignore it, like I have every other time. I guess if someone really wants it, I'm not against it to such an extent I will tell them no. But. Meh.

 

Being able to put scars/change your face proportions middle-game( i am more for putting scars/tattoos on your characters face ) is definitely awesome, I cant count how many times i changed the face of my Hawke in DA:2

I feel brothels in games only distort and distract. There was an article recently about this in Spain. Due to the crisis, there are two distinct groups of prostitutes: nationals and foreign. The foreign ones are overwhelmingly trafficked and kept in debt so they cannot quit. The nationals are former secretaries, clerks, retail workers, etc. that got laid off with the financial crisis and had no other way out.

 

So knowing this, I go to The Blooming Rose and speak with Jethann, and I just think it's insulting. For shame, to know what brothels are like and to see them depicted like this.
