TotSC as the expansion pack only covers Durlag's Tower, werewolves island, ice island and Ulgoth's Beard. Those areas are accessible at any time, so there's no clear distinction between the expansion and the original in game.
SoA covers everything up to the final battle with Jon in hell. ToB is everything after that. Those are sequential, i.e. you can't get to ToB without completing SoA (unless you start a new game that begins in ToB).

Tales of the Sword Coast just adds a few new area's to the game. Unlike SoA and ToB or Diablo II and Diablo: Lord of Destruction, these are not sequential. Ie: you can do the area's in BG in any order you like (though some are obviously to difficult for a new character).

The above comments are quite right.
Durlag's Tower is generally thought to be quite tough and to be left for late in the game.
A solo thief or fighter/thief however can bump up his levels very quickly there using thievery tactics, ( Not fighting everything; luring enemies away from chests, hiding and then raiding the chest etc.) and he will also get useful equipment.
I would not however recommend that you try and complete it, just do the top few levels and leave the below ground levels until stronger.
A level two thief could come out as level 5 quite easily.

Alignment change from good to evil? Perhaps after facing the Demon Knight in Durlag's Tower? It's believable he'd have a change of heart after facing something as utterly evil as a Demon Knight. Gazing into the abyss might actually have that effect.

Warning, there are mods, and I think some patches that stop you getting the helm of opposite alignment. There is a "correction" that stops some spells working correctly. I think that it is the "Scroll of protection from magic."
I think Tutu now wrecks that spell so that you can't use it upon enemies.
(I wish that people making such changes would give you the option of using it or not!
Not everyone has the same opinion as to how the game should work.)
Others more in the know will be able to advise you properly.
If you are playing vanilla, no problem.

Conversely seeing evil as it really is might actually turn someone away from it. Sadly there are a lot of people about today who are telling us that what is good is bad, and what is bad is good. ![]()

I actually forgot the Xvart Village & Mutamins Garden were part of the expansion, is that right? I don't think there was even any sort of 'connection' to the expansion in a sense. which is too bad, it would have been nice to have some mini connection or reference to the other areas.

They are not part of the expansion. As Grond0 said, TotSC only includes Durlag's Tower, Balduran's Island, Ice Island and Ulgoth's Beard.

I'm using a PC drawn directly from the old AD&Ds Deitied & Demigods Manual from the section on Arthurian Heroes. His stats & everything, except level, are drawn from those in the manual. While Arthur, Galahad, Lancelot are LG Paladins, Gawain is listed as neutral, although also a Arthur's favorite nephew. I've been playing him as neutral, albeit chivalrous to a fault. But as I often do w/my PCs, which are always drawn from history, cinema or literature, I continue researching their persona as I play them. I just read Sir Gawain & the Green Knight in which he maintains Lawful Goodness to a fault throughout. I also watched the miniseries on Showtime, Camelot, & he certainly had a bent to goodness in that as well after beginning the series somewhat jaded. So, based on what I know now, when I head to Ulgoth's Beard, I'll likely change him to Lawful Neutral & then by the time I hit SoA, I'll make him LG.
Thanks for all the input folks and folkettes. CKT
