Back onto the unit sizes the Turian platoon is roughly 40-45 judging by Tuchanka. And Benezias guard would be a near full Asari commando squad right? Any other good examples anywhere in the series to sort this one out?

How about Cerberus? ... How many of them do you kill in a mission? Depends on the mission... okay, so how about the Grace Sato mission on Ontarom, or the Remote Fighter Squadron one, on Noveria, or even Sur'kesh. Divide it up into footsoldiers, centurions, engineers, ... then add a nemesis or two, and finally an atlas 'mech. Don't really see phantoms until the coup attempt, IIRC. So won't count them, unless it's as a boss, I guess. They can be a pain in the ass sometimes on insanity.

Try dealing with phantom death squad(aka, two to four phantoms), accompanied by dragoon or two in the final stages of a Gold match in multiplayer. Then take another look at phantoms in single player.

Not so hard anymore, eh? ;)

:D  All I can say is point taken. I've never really played the MP part of the game, not really... and I've only done one insanity run, so the kinda sh*t you're talking about is way beyond my pay grade

Well, this should give you idea what a Gold match against Cerberus looks like.

Mind you, you're looking at a pro. It takes four guys like me and we take much longer than what she did. Still, it's pretty damn impressive to watch... is to hear Cerberus screaming like little girls

You are, of course, obliged to play as renegade FemShep, for maximum awesomeness.

Make them scream ;)

I always renegade through Omega now; it'd be so much more different if Nyreen didn't die, but she does, so ultimately who cares? So no matter how paragon I'm playing the rest of the game, I'll have that.

So I heard you can actually "not recruit" squadmates in ME1 and ME2. How does this work?

Do you need to pick the renegade dialogue to deny Garrus, Wrex, Tali and Liara to join you?
If so, how would that work on them knowing you in ME2 and important scenes with them? (Eg: Wrex in Virmire)

Apparently its stated somewhere on page 1 how you are able to not recruit some squadmates if you do some loyalty missions before the Colector Ship. I assume they'll be absent in ME3 as if they died in the suicide mission?

In ME1 Garrus and Wrex don't have to be recruited, but not at the same time. Its one or the other. You can also do a playthrough by recruiting Wrex and not Garrus, go get Liara, kill Wrex on Virmire and at the end of the game have only Tali, Liara and Ashley/Kaidan as squadmates

In ME2. Grunt, Tali, Samara, Thane, Legion, Zaeed and Kasumi don't have to be recruited, but you have to have at least 8 squadmates to go through the Omega 4 relay. With loyalty missions not been done, it depends on what you do during the suicide mission of who will live and die.

Shepard's enlistment date is pretty loose for the Colonist. It's set at 18 for War Hero and Earthborn.

What if Colonist-Ruthless Shepard went to college and ROTC. Graduated at the age of 23 in 2177 as a second lieutenant? Oh that's right. Shepard isn't smart enough to have gotten accepted into college. Silly me. "I thought Asari needed other species to reproduce."

And look at Anderson who's an even bigger idiot. Shepard, I'm sending you up the middle where the resistance is the heaviest, support the tanks the best you can. I need you alive for the final push to the beam.

Makes me wonder what the guidelines are for training in the Alliance. About their basic training, AIT and any advanced type training. What a bunch of morons.

Well, maybe paragon works even better with Claymore tottin' vanguard. With renegade, it's like, I have mean gun and even meaner attitude. With paragon, it's more like, I speak softly and carry a big mothafuggin' gun with which I'm gonna blow your brains away.

I actually like the sound of the second more :)

Unit sizes are never stated in the game or outside sources as far as I'm aware, though it's probably safe to assume that at least for the humans they are organized similarly to modern NATO countries.

The breakdown in ascending order would probably be something like fire team > squad > platoon > company > battalion > regiment > division > corps > army.

Depending on the country or military organization (it varies slightly), a fire team would be 3 or 4 soldiers or Marines, a squad two or three fire teams, a platoon 3 or 4 squads, a company 3 or 4 platoons, a battalion 3 or 4 companies, a regiment 3 or 4 battalions, a division 3 or 4 regiments, a corps 2 to 5 divisions, and 2 to 5 corps to an army. That's a generalization though and sometimes you can have larger units.

All of them can be called units, though typically when someone in the military refers to 'my unit' they mean the company sized unit they are assigned to.

Torfan was a planetary assault so I would think it involved more than just a handful of soldiers. If so I can't imagine that Shepard would be in overall command as he should still be fairly low on the totem pole. More likely he would have been in command of a smaller unit that participated as part of a larger operation involving other units.

Guessing his rank would help guestimate the size of the unit he was in command of.  A 2nd Lieutenant for example would typically be in command of a platoon. 1st Lieutenants would typically be the XO for a company and perhaps its acting commander under certain circumstances (like the CO being a casualty). Staff Lieutenant seems to be the Alliance equivalent to an Army or Marine Captain, which would typically be the CO of a company. Lt. Commander seems to be the Alliance equivalent to either an Army or Marine Major or a Lt. Colonel. Majors typically are the XO for a battalion or fill in on certain staff duties for the unit. A Lt. Colonel commands a battalion.

Ruthless Shep was at Torfan six years after joining the military. Depending on how quick (or long) it takes to move up the Alliance chain, he might have been a Staff Lieutenant. My best guess would be that he was a company commander at Torfan. Depending on how the Alliance is organized, a company could be anything from 80 to 250 Marines.

@Han A Turian Platoon seems about 40-45 men Judging by the rescue mission on Tuchanka.

Thanks! I'm writing a fiction about Torfan which differs a little from the official version of events. It has Shepard with a small team (6 people with him included) getting separated from the bulk of the force for a special mission. Major Kyle is said to be Shepard's commanding officer during the assault, I put him in charge of the main force. Does it sound plausible? :)

Also, sH0tgUn jUliA, that's pretty much what my Shepard's backstory is! I have posted a thread here about the lines you mentioned, maybe it will be possible to play an intelligent Shepard, after all :D

Yes I do. Being in the miltary its hard not to point out some stuff that is unreal. Had I not been iin the military, I doubt I would give this stuff much thought. That's not a problem is it?

You really wouldn't want to sit through a viewing of LOTR with me.
I can't even hear the music without ranting.

Damn you Peter Jackson. Damn you.

The only military aspects of the game that tend to annoy me are the saluting parts.

Actually I do watch movies this way, and have laughed during "serious" scenes because I saw the ass pull.

That's why they make stuff like drugs and alcohol to temporarily lower your IQ so you can ignore this stuff.
