The point during the fight against Kai Leng during the Cerberus coup, just before Thane gets impaled, I can't figure out why such a competent assassin would CHARGE at a guy only armed with a sword while holding a gun.  The fight against Kai Leng should have ended with Thane alive and well.  All he had to do was this:

It was crap from the beginning.

Kai Leng, being an assassin, should've killed the councilor right away when he landed in front of her.

Thane should've fired his weapon at Lengs head, killing him

After Leng is thrown to the ground, Larry, Curly and Moe(Shepard and squad) pick their noses without firing at Leng

Thane wants to play chicken with Leng and feels what its like to have a sword stuck into him

Shepard the idiot decides that it would be a good time to ask Thane, How bad is it? At this point, Thane could've  redeemed himself by shooting the idiot Shepard in the gut and say, How bad is it dumba**

Kirrahe drops the idiot ball even harder. He's standing there in front of the councilor invisible... and lets himself get shot.

Just another indicator that Kai Leng isn't dangerous because he's competent, trained... he's dangerous because the plot requires him to be.

On top of the above, I hate how Kai Leng has a Barrier, Tactical Cloak, and Phase Disruptor, while Shepard always uses his gun, and if you're lucky, his omnitool.

You'd think N7 training would have Shepard being a little more effective, but whatever class he is, he is forced to use his bare minimum.

Just wonder how TIM could build up and manage his organization, when he always hires incompetent cowards like KL.

Well, Kai Leng does have that Matrix move of stopping bullets :)

Ya, the Kai Leng cut scenes are extremely frustrating to sit through.

I can't begin to fathom the thinking that went behind adding those scenes in.

The same that gave Cerberus a large standing army, I'd reckon.

Everything is better with both Thane and Kirrahe dead:

To get that dialogue, Miranda has to be dead as well.

As mentioned in another thread --

You see KL has a sword.   The others have projectile & other advanced weapons.   It would be "politically incorrect" to use them.

Even if Thane was too sick/stupid to pull an Indiana Jones and just shoot Kai Leng then why couldn't Shepard or one of the 2 squadmates? Shepard and company could've been sitting down with popcorn for all the help they offered.

But Shepard had the SUPER AWESOME Predator pistol.

If it doesn't work the first time, maybe it will the next. Or the one after that. Right?

I think it all went downhill after it was decided to give a character who lives in the 22nd Century a 16th Century weapon. This is what should  have happened to Kai Leng:

Don't bring swords to gunfights

Given the way kinetic barriers work (at least according to the codex, if not how gameplay actually works) they actually make a kind of sense.

Thane charging into melee range of someone who has one, however, doesn't

I for one think that swords can be great in sci-fi (look at Metal Gear or Strider) but they need to be done right. In Mass Effect they simply aren't.

Kai Leng just looks ridiculous with his weird Chinese broadsword which he doesn't even wield right.

Swords were used up into the 20th century in combat. They died out because cavalry died out.

I would have been fine if he used a sword like the Operative in Serenity (using it for executions, close-close quarters, etc). But you're right, the way it was executed was wrong. BioWare decided Kai Leng would only use the sword then bent the game world around him to make it work.
