So I'm thinking of getting Dragon Age 2 because I enjoy RPG's. I never played 1 and maybe I should play that first but I noticed, in watching many gameplay videos, that there's a party system. Is there a way to set it up so that they assist me on their own so I can focus on my main character or do I have to micro-manage everyone in the party?

Yes there are "tactic" slots that can be set up to govern how allies act. There are several presets you can choose from for each character or you can make your own. You can definitely just use the tactics and focus on your character if that is how you want to play.

You can do either. You have tactics slots that you can either just leave and let your party get on with it or tinker with to set up what you want. This is in both DA:O and DA2. And yes, i would definitely suggest you play origins first.
