It happened in a sequel, with only very tenuous foreshadowing at all in the previous installment.

That is not us expressing "heteronormativity", that is the writer making the character bi sexual in order to justify the romances in game

Either that, or they did not want to simply add a new character or make a dwarf romance.

I played both DAO and DA2 before I played Awakening so I already knew Anders was bisexual, but had I played it first I still won't be that shocked if he was revealed to go both ways. I admit I might have assumed he was straight based solely on how openly flirtatious he is with women (and that in itself is an incorrect assumption to make), but then Anders strikes me as a bisexual man with a very heavy preference for women. This is very obvious based on his interactions in both Awakening and DA2, is it not?

If you played DA2 first, how can you make any determination about what your impression might have been if you'd played Awakening first?  You already knew in advance that he was bi, yet you don't see how this colors your view of DA:A?  Ok.

Anders is bisexual is a retcon. It does not matter he is or not. I romanced him in DA2. But he has shown not a sign of attraction to my male warden. I played a female warden but never got to complete it (let alone moving on to DAA). And i heard he will filrt with a female warden even though there is no romance options. so he is meant to be a straight male but just got retcon as bisexual because apparently, the maker do not want people to complain why they couldnt romance a certain character (e.g. Alistair and Morrigan got a lot a flake because they are straight!!!).

Again, so much of Anders character can be a retcon. His sexuality is so trivial compared to those other things.

agreed, but this is BSN where whether you can bump uglies with someone is the most important thing they can contribute to the game

Did I say I don't see you view? If you read my post I said had I played it first I'm likely to have assumed the same. I would have thought he was straight because I usually assume that when a man flirts with a woman. I'm just saying it wouldn't have been right of me to make that assumption, so that is why it would not have shocked me if he was revealed to be bi. Over the years, I've become more tuned to subtextual bisexuality/homosexuality in media when pointed out so I have come to understand things are not often as they appear to be in plain view. And honestly that banter with Nate isn't that subtextual, just replace Nate with a woman and it's obviously definitely flirty.

The weird shift that stands out the most for me is if Anders is present when the Warden-Commander talks to Wynne in the city of Amaranthine, and Anders actually objects to the idea of the mages simply breaking away from the chantry completely.

I don't know why we couldn't just get a new mage healer dude.

But yeah it's 180. A shame because Anders actually is reasonable in Awakening. If a bit of an uptight annoyance.

If you played DA2 with the knowledge that Anders is bi, then your assessment of DA:A was flawed to begin with.  Playing the two games out of order means that you cannot come to an unbiased conclusion about the events in question, regardless of what opinion you may hold.

Six years in Kirkwall will change your opinions on that sort of thing, I suppose.

That can be chalked up to Anders getting a new Soul Mate, and not the kind that ends up with cuddling

That and merging with an entity that believes that Sir Pounce-A-Lot is a slave.

Well, Anders completely different personality in DA2 has a pretty clear explanation; being possessed by a spirit of Justice that's been tainted and twisted into Vengeance after merging with him. It makes sense to me, much more than Merrill's personality change did.

How can you be gay? You never announced that you were gay the moment you posted in this thread! If you're not gay, why aren't you constantly telling people that you're gay?

I'm offended, sir, because I assumed you were straight and now you are telling me that you have effectively "retconned" yourself as gay. My Twitter followers will hear about this!

Possibly, yes. I don't deny that my view may be flawed. I feel I know myself enough to make such a statement because I feel it's likely to be true for me. Might not mean much to others though so I get that.

Either that or the "Killing even a single innocent is unforgivable," line. Of course this is the same guy who likes to eat people now, so retcons all around.

Maybe he just wasn't interested in YOUR MALE warden? Not everything wants your Warden's D.

Not to mention six years brooding about the injustice of it all, by god, it's not like he was possessed by a spirit between DA:A and DA2 or anything.

I'm seriously confused on why we're saying Anders personality is a retcon when we actually know why he changes so much.

Some people just weren't LIs in the expansion. Most were in the sequel.

It's not really that big of one, since only one person supported it and he was insane.
