so just as everyone is jumping (star)ship, i got onto the mass effect trilogy... and truly loved it.  the gameplay, the immersive character development, the branching plot devices... great stuff.

then i read an article banging on about how wonderfully diverse the mass effect universe was - but i couldn't agree less

why does every modern action game have to be a recapitulation of the american marines?

i mean, starship troopers was great, but haven't we moved on as a society? both in and outside of games? if the alliance is really the representation of humanity to the stars, shouldn't it be a little more diverse?

and speaking of the stars, why are just about all alien races (who have evolved in isolation) essentially humans with scaly faces and 3 fingers? whose speech is translated into fluant, nuanced english, except when they are an ai consensus or an ancient race? arrrggghhh that bugged me!

a rich and complex universe is at the heart of every great sci-fi or fantasy story, whatever the format.  unfortunately, i feel that a focus on the action gameplay came at the cost of plot, most noticeably in the 3rd instalment (where the action was top notch, btw!)

having said that, you guys have done something magnificent, so keep up the good work!  i just wish you could unshackle your artificial world from the restraints of bland fps formula, and give us something truly unique

shep, out

I agree, but I suppose it's so that human players can relate.  If every other species looked as different as the Hanar or the Elcor it might reduce the mainstream appeal of the games (not to mention human-alien romances).

My main complaint in that regard is that every Quarian you met had a foreign accent EXCEPT Kal Reegar, who was given an American-as-apple-pie accent by Adam Baldwin.

What happened to all the Asians?

Like 40% of the world's population is Asian, we only see Samesh, Emily Wong and some random alliance dude.. I think. That's just not right.

Don't forget

Maeko

Grace Sato

Fai Dan

Evil corporate asian on Noveria (I can't remember his name but it was Korean IIRC)

Kai Leng

Samantha Traynor

Granted they fall into stereotypes more often than not: good girl asian, ninja, evil corporate asian, etc.

Plus if there were human/ Hanar romances or the likes of near incompatible bodies, at least in terms of physiology, it'd be akin to or very close to sodomy. Maybe like getting with a talking, proselytizing, octopus/dog. All due respect to the Hanar. Or Elcor, which would be wooly mammoth on human action. Need i go there?

Again All due respect to the race.

Kind of like you I only got into recently, this year and found it easily became one of my favorite scifi settings. With all the Codex Information it is easy to run a Pen and Paper Mass Effect game*

well it is a navy, thus marines.

But there is diviserity in the game. Kasumi and Traynor are both not white and two of my favorite characters and are ethnic while being their own characters. I also like how no one bats an eye that Cortez has lost a husband.

That being said, more diviersity is of course welcome.

There is the RL idea of Covegent Evolution, perhaps in the ME universe being bipidel is a desiarble trait in species? That can explain why they are similar. However the codices go into greater detail about the species of the ME galaxy. Still with the detail to their cultures of the aliens they feel much more unique then other scifi aliens.

Turians and Quarians are dextro-amino acids, Volus come from an Ammonia planet. Not to mention Turians are an avian race more akin to birds or raptors.

As for language that is in a codex entry that they have universal translators. I believe that when thane refers to femshep as Siha she even says that her translator is broken.

*there are so many systems to choose from for PnP mass effect from Fate to dnd to traveller and everything in between.

Words cannot describe how truthfully you speak.

Really, when I read the part where you say that the aliens now are basically humans, you hit too close to home.

I absolutely LOVE the entire series (ME2 was a tad meh), but I can't help but notice how juvenile the writing has gone throughout the years. You have Turians spitting ''ass'' everywhere. You have Wrex himself going from a witty, quiet badass, to a generic action monster who is a wannabe of the original.

You can have sexual intercourse with Turians, Quarians, freaking Protheans, Drell for crying out loud.

How would it work? Do Quarians have vaginas? Do Turians, Protheans and Drell have penises? Not explained. They're just humans dressed queerly.

In any case, welcome. I was also introduced to this series about only 5-6 months ago. Played all of them, adored the first (for obvious reasons. Except Feros. Such bad level design), resented the second for more immature writing, and the third for the same reasons.

I mean, you encounter a Prothean, have him walk around with you, be with you on the Normandy, and everyone's like: ''Oh, it's just a Prothean. No one knows how they look and they haven't been seen since about 50.000 years ago, but meh.''

Samantha Traynor

According to Patrick Weekes, her character writer, she is of Indian background who went to Oxford and grew up on Horizon. She is far  from being Asian

This does bring up a curious thing.

would their be new ethnicites in the ME universe due to you know humans colonizing other planets.
