It's only two months until Dragon Age: Inquisition comes out and we've been building our headcanons about what's been happening to our Wardens, Hawkes, whether Aveline liked Hawke or not, if Leliana ever did get those shoes, and so on in our heads for years. So this is a thread where we get to share our little tidbits of headcanon and theory with each other.

Share your theories which are true in your head until proven otherwise.
Share your theories which are true in your head even if they've been proven otherwise.

Share your favorite character truths.
Share what you think happened to your versions of characters in-between games.

And share the metaphysical.

Have a ball since while it's true in your games, it's not true anywhere else.

Comment also on the ones you like!

+ If Leliana dies during the Urn of Sacred Ashes quest, Dorothea has an agent take the form of a dead bard from Fereldan she knew because she's an identity no one recognizes.

+ If Wynne dies, Rhys is killed by Lambert and Adrian's plan still succeeds with him as a martyr.

+ The Warden and Leliana's relationship took a turn for the worst when she became an agent of the Divine but they met up for weeks of revelry and reknewal of their love on a regular basis right up until the Warden didn't show up mysteriously during their last rendevouz.

+ If Isabella isn't romanced and he's alive, she eventually renews her relationship with Zevran.

+ A romanced Sebastian eventually breaks his vows to love Hawke.

+ A non-romanced Sebastian eventually breaks his vows to love Bethany and joins the Mages' revolution.

+ If Sebastian is allowed to calm down, he doesn't raze Kirkwall if Anders lives but takes over Starkhaven and becomes a powerful ally of the Templars.

+ If Anders is killed, Sebastian takes over Starkhaven and becomes a powerful ally of the Mages.

+ Oghren's Approval score reset to 50 to the Warden due to some unconscious blaming of them for his failing to turn his life around as a Surface Dwarf and falling back into Old Habits.

+ King Alistair forgives the Warden for sparing Loghain by Awakening, mostly because he's the guy who sends Loghain to Orlais as punishment.

+ Drunk Alistair is a drunk less because of anger at the Warden than the realization, after the fact, he betrayed Duncan by not seeing the Blight through. He will attempt to rejoin the Order and beg the Wardens forgiveness after this.

Boons

+ The Circle of Fereldan Tower had freedom for a full year before the Chantry threatened and Exalted March and Irving submitted it back to their authority to prevent a war on Fereldan soil. This event, however, caused many mages to become radicalized and the core of the anti-Templar resistance.

+ Cullen actually did kill three-apprentices in a fit of PTSD induced paranoia. He was then imprisoned but was recruited back into the Templars by Meredith who was, even then, a hardass. Cullen eventually overcame his paranoia regarding mages and then realized he was surrounded by monsters.

His guilt over this event drives him to this day.

+ The Dalish settlement of the Hinterlands failed due to the fact other Dalish didn't trust King Alistair and while there's still a community in the Hinterlands and it's used as a common meeting ground, almost no Dalish consider it "their" territory.

+ The Bann of the Alienage is viewed as better than the Teyrn of Gwaren because City Elves really can't quite believe in the later. Even if the latter is mostly devastated Darkspawn ruin anyway.

NPCs

+ Anora is freed by King Alistair after a year's time if not Queen and given a Bann position as well as stipend in her father's former holdings. Annoyingly, she marries up almost immediately and becomes the new Arlessa of Denerim. If Vaugn is still alive, he falls down a flight of stairs on their honeymoon.

Ha, works for me!

+ The Urn of Sacred Ashes tomb isn't some sort of miracle factory as the Maker does not roll that way (if he exists). It's not the result of lyrium either. It was created by Blood Mages who worshiped Andraste, probably converted Tevinter mages or early members of the Inquisition. They created a relic from her ashes to glorify the Maker (or just some random ashes they decided to bless) and made it the most powerful healing relic they could. The spirits in the tomb are summoned from the Fade to act like the ghosts of Andraste's disciples and it does a lot of Psychology 101 to help make sure only the "worthy" may pass.

An Andrastrian mage may figure this out, like Wynne, and be offended or understand the effort made in honor of Andraste.

At heart, though, the place is a glorified theme park.

I will be dissapointed if it's not true.

Though I can live with only Hawke-Amell relation, it's still kinda cool.

I like it.

+ Malcolm Hawke was elf-blooded, either distantly or closely, making him doubly unsuitable as a spouse and the Hawkes more sympathetic to the oppressed.

+ Meredith and Orsino knew about Mage Hawke or Bethany from the moment a bunch of guards reported them using magic when they came into the Gallows from the Blight. They both determined, independently, that the Apostates were very good at smoking out problems that would be politically embarrassing for them to deal with. Bethany isn't as valuable or useful as Mage Hawke so she eventually goes to the Gallows or Wardens but Mage Hawke is the sort of individual they were perfectly willing to overlook due to their skill as a problem solver.

+ Meredith insisted a Mage Hawke be depicted as a warrior in the Statue of the Champion along the docks.

+ Kirkwall is where problematic mages were sent and the Templars dumped their most stupid, fanatical, or mage-ist Templars. It was considered something of a political Siberia. Someone should have seen the inevitable results coming but didn't.

+ Hawke killing the Arishok delayed the invasion of Thedas by the Qunari by however many years until it actually happens. The Arishok was fully prepared to begin the war again as a means of satisfying the Qun.

+ Red Lyrium "grows" and Meredith sent samples to her fellow Templars.

+ Hawke's killing of Orsino prevented the Blood Mages from taking over the Mage Revolution. Hawke's killing of Meredith prevented the Templars from being taken over Red Lyrium-wielders. This actually prevented the war from becoming much-much worse.

+ Agents of the Venatori arranged for both Meredith and Orsino's corruption. Hawke threw a gigantic spanner in their works.

+ Agents of the Venatori also hired Isabela to steam the Tome of Koslun. See above with Hawke and Spanner.

+ Wynne's Pollyanna attitude to the Chantry and Templars is the result of being tied to a spirit of Faith.

it was just a compromise for the inq. Not used to stand-alone heroes so if they are related we get a new protag and connection. But imagine it a family of magic changing the world good or bad it spits on the shoes of story

I'm debating my headcanon that Chaotic Good Anders and Lawful Good Justice together just equals Insane.

Or if Act III Anders and Justice are being manipulated by the Elder One and/or Corypheus because terrorism is hard to reconcile with Justice no matter what.

One thing I am sure of.

+ Anders is suffering PTSD from the Battle of Amaranthine. That's why his personality has shifted so dramatically, not just Justice. The bloodshed, murder, and horror he witnessed created a much bigger social conscience even before being possessed. It's also why he has such dramatic mood swings.

- The real reason Leandra reminded Quentin so much of his dead wife was because he was married to Revka Amell, having lost his mind after she died. This also makes him the long-lost father of the Human Mage Warden.

- Several of of the Wardens are actually bilingual. Aside from Mahariel who is semi-fluent in Elvish, Amell and Surana are fluent in two or three languages (due to having little to do but read in the Circle), the Aeducan purposely learnt the near-forgotten Ancient Dwarven language so Bhelen and Trian couldn't read their diary, while Cousland is able to speak Orlesian and picked up some Antivan from their sister-in-law.

- Due to the Dwarf Commoner's mother being often too busy drinking to take care of them, Rica pratically raised her younger sibling. She is also the one who taught them how to read and write, passing on the lessons she learnt from her training to be a noble hunter.

- If Hawke agrees to allows Aveline to use their Mabari to help train the Kirkwall Guard, the men and women of the guard quickly come to adore their new canine instructor. Hawke's mabari eventually becomes their unofficial mascot and is affectionately nicknamed "The Bark Knight".

- If romanced, Isabela routinely adds raunchy sex scenes to Hawke's diaries with footnotes offering suggestions for things to try. If Bethany is in the Circle, Isabela accidentally sends one copy of the diary along with a pile of dirty books. After skimming over the first few pages out of curiosity, Bethany quickly realises what it contains and ends up having to burn it.

All of those are awesome.

The Quentin one is tragic, though.

Makes me feel for the guy.

Because in addition to his wife dying, that also means his child was stolen from him by the Templars.

Part of the reason I came up with that headcanon was trying to figure out who Quentin was before he went crazy and why Leandra looked like his wife? Then I noticed that he coincidentally looked a lot like my human mage and those awesome-but-tragic pieces fell together.

It gets even more tragic, as this also ties into my headcanon that one of the other children Leandra mentions Revka lost to the Circle was sent to Ostwick and grew up to become the lover of the Trevelyan Mage Inquisitor. They were also sent as part of the delegation of mages to the meeting and sadly ended up getting killed during the Breach.

...

Yeah... I really need to start writing more upbeat headcanons!

This one's a bit off the mark since PTSD doesn't typically induce episodes of murderous paranoia. PTSD sufferrers are almost always kind, caring and considerate people. They know how bad suffering is and they typically go out of their way to make sure others do not suffer like they did.

They are, indeed, but freak episodes and sudden violence aren't impossible. This is something they usually regret instantly, however.

The caring, kind, and consideration elements was one of the reasons why I thought Anders suffered it.

+ The lot of Saarebas has improved under Arishok Sten if he was friends with a Mage Warden. Those who have proven their commitment to the Qun have even been allowed to have their mouths unsewn.

This is considered highly radical but not technically wrong under the Qun.

+ Sten, if he never recovers his sword but is befriended by the Warden, becomes a Grey Warden instead. It is a form of suicide he can live with.

+ Saarebas actually have a highly complex system of sign language they developed amongst themselves.

+ Tallis is actually a fairly vicious killer, professional spy, and antihero. Her "Felicia Day-esque" persona is a constructed to manipulate humans who find quirky elves adorable and nonthreatening.

+ Anti-Qun Hawke actually had the option of getting the list of names from Tallis but Varric lied about it because he didn't want Cassandra to know about it. Hawke turned it over to Sister Nightingale.

+ The Grey Wardens, for the most, really-really hate the Warden Commander of Fereldan if they survive. Not only do they break every rule of their order but they get rewarded for it with fame, a beautiful consort, land, and title.

+ See above, Carver actually gets along with most of his fellow Grey Wardens in part because they dislike his Mage Cousin and are about disliking showboats.

Grim self-sacrifice and underappreciated work is the lot of the Wardens and Carver groks that.

+ Gamlen actually doesn't leave his hovel to live in the family mansion due to guilt because of spending Leandra's fortune. Also, he's a pig who has gotten used to the lifestyle.

+ Charade's mother was an Orlesian bard.

Anger and violence are not the same thing though. There is no causative link between a violent personality and PTSD, other than self-harm. Violence does not exist in the diagnostic criteria for PTSD. That does not mean that people with PTSD cannot be violent, but that such behaviour is rarely if ever caused by the disorder. Not trying to be a SJW (a term I dislike), I just wanted to clear up some common misconceptions about the disorder for people who, unlike yourself, may not be familiar with it.

I've always thought Merrill actually had a bit of a thing for the Dalish Warden, which may not have been reciprocated. Which would explain why she's weirdly hostile towards her in the origin in contrast to her DA2 personality, but despite this seems to be by far the saddest to see her go and still seems broken up about it seven years later.

It's complicated I guess.

Some headcanons about Ostwick:

  • Originally the city was built by Tevinter as a general sea port between the eastern coastline and the lands surrounding the Waking Sea. It was taken by the armies of Andraste.
  • Ostwick was besieged by the Qunari in 7:56 Storm but was successfully defended
    • During the siege of Ostwick, the Patriarch of the Trevelyan family defected to the Qunari invaders, fearing that they were fighting a losing battle, and gave information on the weaknesses of the defenders. Since then the Treveylans have been close to the Chantry and very devout to the Maker, repenting for the betrayal of their ancestor.
    • Since repelling the Qunari, the people have since prepared for any attack, be it the Qunari or other enemy forces. Double walls were built and equipped with ballistas. Its City Guard are comparable in skill to the Chevaliers of Olaris. There is a garrison of archers, who routinely patrol on the walls, with a non-insignificant number of them elves (during the Siege many elves were proven to be very good arches). In recent years, with the local Chantry's blessings, mages specializing in close combat magic, known as "Knight Enchanters," have been permitted to patrol with Templar squads and assist in Templar duties. The waters from the Ostwick coast to Brandel's Reach are routinely patrolled. As such, pirates and smugglers are cautious when attempting to go into and out of The Waking Sea.
  • The city and surrounding area are set up similarly like Clocktown and Termina from The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask.
    • There's a giant clocktower/lighthouse in the center of the city built by Tevinter when it originally controlled the region. It still stands and works today. It rings on set intervals and the lighthouse is set into motion at around sunset. It uses fire so volunteer mages for the Circle come in to light it and keep it lit until sunrise.
    • North of the City are the Vimmark Mountains. The mountains near Ostwick hold a rare ore and a necessary component for the city's famous steel.
    • West of the City is the Planasene Forest. The city's lumber is harvested here as well as food from the Outer farmlands, owned and raised privately; be it humans living outside the walls or elves living in the Alienage by the West Gate.
    • East of the City is the Coastline and the Stone Wharf. Stone houses carved into the cliffs can still be seen along with the additions made over the years. It sees a lot of traffic from the coastal Marcher Cities and Fereldan. The Stone Wharf has also been called "Little Fereldan" since there is a lot of Fereldan influence on the housing and people, especially since the influx of refugees escaping the Fifth Blight.
    • South of the City is a canyon home to the ruins of an unnamed Ancient Kingdom. The ruins appear to be older than even Ancient Tevinter. Was it is a ancient Elvhen city forgotten by even the Dalish? Or another Civilization different from the Elvhes wiped out by the Ancient Magisters? Everyone seems to agree that whatever it was it has to hold some valuable treasure. Many attempts at funding an expedition has come up but has not panned out one way or another. There is a sense of dread that can be felt by anyone coming near the canyon.
  • There's a North, South, East, and West District with Time Square being around the clocktower. Each is divided by the aqueducts brining water from the Vimmark Mountain Springs
  • The local Chantry is located North-West (inside the wall)
  • The Circle and Templar Barrack located South-East and is a refurbished Tevinter Temple to the Old Gods
  • There is a University in Ostwick to the North-East with great schools of Civil and Marine Engineering. Graduates from here make some of the finest walls, houses, fortresses, and ships in the world.
  • People take great precedent in having 'expected' career paths but that is second only to merit. If you do your job well you will climb the social ladder.
  • Ostwick has a system similar to Fereldan's Landsmeet where the heads of the various Noble houses as well as elected representatives of the Alienage, Stone Warf, and the Merchant's Guild act as the Legislative Body with an elected Teyrn presiding everyone.
    • The current Teyrn is actually a Fereldan native whose family came before the Fifth Blight to seek better fortunes. He managed to work his way up using only his skills and wit to gain support from the majority of the Ostwick Landsmeet.

Starkhaven was settled by Fereldan mercenaries from Highever who intermarried with the locals. Later it was a refuge for many Fereldans during the Orlesian occupation, including Bryce Cousland's sister who married the Prince of the City.

This is why Sebastian has a thick (and somewhat antiquated) Highever accent.

It's also partly why he seeks out Hawke as he sympathizes with the Fereldans more than most Kirkwallers.

This would also, amusingly, make him the Cousland Warden's cousin.
