How I react depends entirely on the circumstances of the betrayal, how severe it is and the personality of my inquisitor being betrayed. There's no one answer that fits all. It will vary.

After I pick my jaw up off the floor, I'll do what seems right at the time.  I'll probably do it differently next time.

Usually, I kill a betrayer.  That's the lesson for anyone else who dares defy me.

Its a horrible idea to have a companion betray us, after our initial playthrough that entire surprise is gone, meaning a majority of players will just avoid that character because we know whats coming.

Even if the companion who betrays us is dependent on some system of approval or just appealing to a given character, players will catch on to that pattern and how we can manipulate it. Its just a bad idea in my opinion to waste an entire character, building them up as a genuine companion just to have them backstab you, when we'll already know whats coming. At least with Loghain it was done right off the bat, it didnt waste a whole game with a twist we knew about

I would capture and imprison them in the dungeon for interrogation to get everything I can out of them, but if that isn't feasible under the circumstances I'll kill them.

I have the feeling the term "plot twist" is lost on you...

.Throw them down into the Deep Roads for the Darkspawn to have. Bad if the traitor is male. Worse if female. but that of course is revered for the most terrible of betrayals.

I'm going to go with the Captain Price method.

When we're out of danger, or if I ever catch them again, I'm going to punch them in the face and give them one chance to explain themselves.

And if they don't got a good reason, they're going to get to see why they call it the murder knife.

Anders was interesting because to me he didn't betray hawke, just pursued his own agenda.
If companions can do similar things(possibly based on approval) then my responses to them will vary based on the act.
Not a fan of the notion that one of the companions is a secret snake for the enemy. As others have mentioned once the first playthrough is gone that bolt is shot and there's little motivation to interact/recruit that companion. As for how I'd deal with such betrayal, death, either painfully slow or mercifully quick based on the nature of the betrayal.

Depends.

Did they betray me out of the blue?

Did they betray me because I was being a huge ******* and basically more of a danger to anyone than the breach itself?

Could I have seen it coming?

Would it actually help me later on?

Like Morrigan for example, some felt as betrayal. To me it was really that even though she had always planned this, we were still good friends and it felt more like she needed to do this for herself than to screw me over.

Depends on how sexy and fun the betrayer is.

Depends on the circumstances, someone that mass murdered like Anders I would execute. Otherwise I lean toward mercy and forgiveness.

I've already had one love interest try to kill me straight out of the gate, what's one more? :P

For everyone else, it's very hard not to metagame. As in, this person can still be useful to me later, regardless of how my character might feel. Or, I have to kill this guy or it will make party member X angry.

As a player, I don't take betrayal angrily or personally anymore, probably because I've had a lot of it happen to me over my cRPG experience :D  Sun Li, Bishop, Bastila (though that wasn't really her fault), Aribeth, Yoshimo, Anders, possibly Anora...  Don't get me wrong, it still gets a reaction out of me, just not the "OMG I'MA STAB YOU" sort.

So it winds up boiling down to how the PC takes betrayal more than me.  My first Inquisitor can see something sympathetic in just about anyone, so while she'll certainly be sad and disappointed, she's unlikely to get violent unless the person's betrayal makes him/her an active and serious threat to the Inquisition.  Later PCs may not be so charitable.

EXecute Cassandra...mind you that's my answer to everything...toilet blocked? Execute Cass, feeling cold? Burn her at the stake etc etc.

The world has a simp,le choice: return to the worship of the true gods and obliterate that heretic Andrastes cult, or be consumed by demons.

Well we had Anders betray us in DA2, and that was a doozy. He lies about the potion, gets you to collect the parts for the bomb, then gets your help to plant it. His actions showed a total lack of concern for the Mages of the circle, including Bethany...because he had his own agenda. Nothing you could do would stop him. (Believe me I spent 10 games trying, before I realised that you couldn't). As a LI on that first run, I felt utterly heartbroken and mad at his selfishness, tears dripping down my face as I murder knifed him.

Isabella on the other hand felt in character when she ran away with the tome...but she came back.

So, my answer to OP is depends.

Threaten/kill my family or companions, death.

Murder of innocents, death.

Betrayal of myself to the opposition because they are holding one of your family captive, I'll listen to your explanation but will never trust you again, and if a LI, well not anymore. Likely result exile or imprisonment. Although in this case we should see some out of character dialogue and hopefully persuade them to tell us the truth before any betrayal occurs, in which case forgiven.

Double agent out for their own selfish agenda (Viv?), death.

Random prole met in game betrays me, death.

Where in the Creators' name is everyone getting the feeling that betrayal is imminent?! I haven't seen any official word, so I probably missed something.

Vivienne isn't a romance, so less drama if she does end up betraying people...

1) kill
2) kill
3) probably kill.... There are a couple things that could convince me to spare him. Like none of my allys being killed and a companion asking me not to(it's worked in the past), but if even one faceless soldier or a civilian dies then he's dead no matter what.

I think it'd be really interesting if they did do a betrayal. Especially with a companion I like. But I think it'd be fat better to have the player become the betrayer. Like if a companion killed a bunch of innocents or something but it actually gains the inquisition something. So then you could kill them for killing innocents or forgive them because they helped you(I would kill them)

Some scenarios from Bioware games and others that spring to mind,

Coerced companion joined the enemy side. I "forgive" them but they have to work harder to prove their loyalty (and of course I'm keeping my eye on them)

Someone I thought as a friend tried to kill me by setting a trap. I'm coming after him with everything I've got, show him how it's done.

Conflict of belief forces me into duel/fight/decision. I respect anyone who would fight to the death for their beliefs. I'd give him a chance to join me again before I kill him.

Someone in my ranks is a spy. I will try to turn him. If that fails, probably imprisonment/torture. He is a spy, he knows things, perhaps he turns out to be useful some day.

Someone lied and used me for their purposes. Depends on the severity of the action. If I was the Inquisitor in DA2, I'd punish both Isabela and Anders, because peace keeping is part of my job. As Hawke I don't care much about what Isabela did (because ultimately the war was Arishok's decision and she actually took full responsibility) but Anders put me in a very difficult position.

In any case, I'm good to my people and expect their loyalty in return so I'm willing to be reasonable when there is a conflict. If their stance allows room for reconciliation I'll try to do this. If it doesn't they will be dealt with appropriately.

I agree. Torture is something I think is underdone in video games. So there should be more of it. Because it happens in real life and all that stuffs. And besides, torture is fun.

I'm not playing as myself so it depends on my quizzys mentality. It goes from complete forgiviness to rolling heads. My own approach is situational but goes from forgiviness (though I'd watch closely people who have betrayed me before and not fully trust them) to kicking them out my Inquisition.

I'd strip them of all wealth, assets and titles, Publicly humiliate them and cripple them, they can spend the remainder of their years as a street begger.

Regarding betrayal in DA II, I think there was none.

The companions just pursued their own agenda. Hawke didn't really have one, he just stumbled through the story.

For the most time, each companion considered it worthwhile to travel along, but at some point, they remembered where they stood and what was important to them.

None of them made any vows "I swear to you that I will fight with you until the Arishok, Orsino and Meredith are all dead."
