Think back to the very, very first time you ever played DAO. What were some of your biggest surprises and happy moments in your very first run through?

I got into DAO because I was in a accident and had nothing to do for months while I recovered. So I looked around online for a video game that I could play a strong, female character who wasn't running around in underwear skimpy armour. Keep in mind I had not played a video game since I was a child (15+ years earlier). I also wanted a story with humour and a great back story. But I had no idea that there were romances in the game at all.

Then as I was playing the game and was talking to Leliana and she was becoming friendly I remember thinking..."Is she flirting with me? WTH?" Well I had to see where that was going let me tell ya! Well I ended up romancing her of course once I figured out I could. But I will never forget how shocked (in a good way) that there was a video game of that calibre that allowed a F/F romance. I was stunned. I remember asking myself, "When the hell did this happen and why haven't I heard?!"

Alas, this was the exception and not the rule in gaming but still it was a very fun moment.

I had a lot of the big story twists spoiled for me the first time through...except for the fact that Alistair was the bastard son of King Maric. I was pleasantly surprised to find that wasn't spoiled for me.

I bought it and had it for quite a while before installing it. I was playing other games at the time and wanted to finish them first. My son kept asking if I played it yet, so I decided to try it. Been hooked ever since :)

I laughed at many things through the game (I loved the humor). Dog peeing on everything was always funny.

The sad parts were very sad of course. Just a great game all the way in my opinion.

I remember playing DA2 and never had a laugh from it.

I thought DA2 was a riot. the rivalry between Isabela and Ave was really funny. If you have Isabela with you during the quest that gets Ave together with Donnic...that's one of the funniest things in the whole franchise.

I think the biggest surprise was Alistair killing himself by killing Archie. I was all "Wait... wha?" and he totally killsteals the big bad, leaving my poor warden grieving and heartbroken.

Oh wow. Dredge up the memories...

Lets see. My first time playing was actually after playing DA2 (actually the first time playing was on PS3, but I didn't get all the way through it, so I don't count that). I remember my first reaction playing a mage was being disappointed that I didn't have the nifty "auto-cast" animation and instead had the staff punching. But that aside. I was surprised how I could interact more with my companions. I could actually have conversations with them outside of quests?! OMG! And I was over joyed when I actually felt like I had a romance (with Alistair of course).

And just like with DA2, I cracked up over party banters. I still do

My most heartbreaking memory was when Alistair sacrificed himself to kill the Archdemon, realizing I should have taken Morrigan up on her offer of the DR. My jaw had hit the floor and I screamed like a 5yr/o not understanding what I did wrong until I went and read up on how to keep him and myself alive lol.

Ive always done the DR thankfully...never even knew he could die until I read the above posts. Ive always romanced Leliana but I suppose if I had romanced Al I would NOT have sent him to Morrigan's bed.

For me the biggest positive surprise was that the game was long enough to allow good plot and character development and time to get attached to the characters.

But I will never forget how shocked (in a good way) that there was a video game of that calibre that allowed a F/F romance. I was stunned. I remember asking myself, "When the hell did this happen and why haven't I heard?!"

Bioware did that already back in 2005 with Jade Empire which had both F/F and M/M romances.

Probably Morrigan's Dark Ritual reveal. Up until that point I was fully committed to having my Warden slay Archie and take one for the team.

Along similar lines, I was surprised by the reveal that the ritual to make a person a Grey Warden condemns them to an early grave.

I can't really remember it too well, but I was annoyed when I killed isolde to save connor. Not realising that there were more dialogue choices further on that would finally tell you about the circle.

When I let Anora kill Alastair. I was a dwarf and afraid if I used my boon early she wouldn't help my sister, nephew, or my people. Only later on I found out you can basically use the boon twice lol. Poor al.

Blimey, the VERY first time i played through origins? lets see....

  • I remember accidentally hooking up with a transgender dwarf hooker
  • Mucked up Zev so he returned to the crows in denerim and i had to kill him
  • Sten hated me
  • Had to reload when i forgot what the dragon blood did and accidentally put it in the ashes, thus slaying leliana
  • Accidentally sided with the templars when i assumed that the litany would be used automatically, so irving never survived. (On the plus side, wynne stayed with me when i did that)
  • Fornicating with as many ladies as i could. (My Cousland was randy)
  • Spending half an hour in thought at wether or not to do the dark ritual.
  • Deciding against the dark ritual
  • Frequently getting confused between who was me and who was Riordan (we had the same face, his was just a bit older)
  • Smiting The Archdemon on the peak of Fort Drakon for the first time was deeply satisfying, and seeing my wardens lifeless form saddening
  • The joy of seeing Fergus alive
  • ENCHANTMENT!

That is all

Asking for rewards is equitable, not exploitative.

Initially, I went full Dex on my Rogue. Learned soon enough that Cunning is needed equally.

Dogs real name is Barkspawn.

I always play Rogues. Unlocking stuff is too valuable, even if the start of the game doesn't present much reward for it later on.

The game gives you two tanks, two two handers, two rogues, two mages. And a shale.

Hardening Alistair is necessary to have all options at the Landsmeet.

Sandal might just be a Biotic God.

-Played really badly at first. My character and ocmpanions were completely underpowerd.

-I was complete in love with history and armor designs.

-Died to High Dragon like 10 times. Beated it after 3 hours of battle using a cheap ass strategy with Morrigan.

-I invested skill points terribly on my characters. I gave Morrigan strenght and consittuition....

-Beated the game with terrible gear at level 12. Did no side quests at all.

-I lost Wynne and Sten during my playtrought :( I was very sad and didn'`t even knew she was a companion.

I was so overjoyed when I learned I could just talk to my party members whenever I wanted. Spent more time talking to them than actually playing.

Accidentally ringing the gong and then FREAKING OUT when the High Dragon attacked me.

Hmm...

Took me a while to work out some basic things in the game, first play-through was a Male 2H Warrior Noble called Cody.

I managed to get Wynne to leave me after I had completed the game, so every time I went back to Camp, she gave me a lecture on how I have no respect for my fellow man and how that I was no better than the Darkspawn and all that jazz.

Wondered why Zevran was my only option, Hypersexuals don't appeal to me.

Nearly to throwing my PS3 Controller at the TV after Cauthrien managed to kill me for the eighth time.

A bit disgusted that I had to sleep with Morrigan of all people so that I didn't die.

I somehow got my 1st rogue all the way to Archie, in Tier ONE light armor

Heck if I knew how armor tiers were use, I figure tier 1 was as high as light armor went

I knew jack nothing on how stats went, so my party was a mess, somehow I beat the game..probably luck w/ army support

If I have to pick a particular moment that shocked me in my first playthrought I would pick Morrigan's personal quest. Yeah, I remeber to have a scracthy feeling about Flemeth since the minute I met her. And when you finally confront her and... well, she turns into a /*#!! dragon it was pretty awesome.

Also, the fact that you had so many places to put your good spent diplomacy points in conversations, with actual meaningful effect. I remember my first mage warden walking in Denerim and running into a brainwashed Loghain knight dying to duel me; It was awesome to convince him otherwise. Or the different coercion lines that appear with Isabella if you flirt with her. That kind of details grew on me.

Man my first play through was as the City Elf and that origin story really hooked me in and it remains maybe my favorite part of the game because it finally felt like that racial selection meant something other than a stat modifier - sadly that feel didn't persist through the game at all.

Other than that I loved the moment Morrigan lays out Flemeth's plan and thinking that was possible but also that it was equally likely she was playing me for a fool. I rather liked that the game doesn't necessarily tell you which is right.

Remember the chills received from the Broodmother poem recital; never gets old. And as a Dwarven Commoner with the choices he made, his best friend and family all turned against him, so he had little problem taking the Ultimate Sacrifice to spare Alistair.

On a brighter note, I was not content with the CC chosen looked in cut-scenes, so this is not my canonical campaign for Rogue.

I remember every place I got wrecked.
In the Deep Roads, in Redcliffe castle... Jarvia kicked my butt as well as Flemeth. So did Zathrian. Oh, and the Broodmother. Other than that, I remember being very confused but somewhat satisfied with my decisions. Good times, good old times.

It happened this summer.

What I remember most is how much I suuuuuucked at the game. It was my first RPG. I played on normal but died countless times. I don't dare to check how many injuries my first character sustained. xD

Trudged through the tower of Ishal part, found a two-handed sword and compared it to Alistair's stats. "Ooh, this one does more damage!" Equipped two-handed sword on Alistair and then spent the next levels wondering why Alistair couldn't use most of his abilities.

Was surprised I could build a romance with Alistair and went to camp to talk to him as often as I could. Totally happy with that. Then I made him king at the Landsmeet and he dumped me.

Other than that I did reasonably well. Didn't miss any companions on my first run and got Zev's approval high enough so he didn't betray me.
