We've got at least two threads taking a stab at the funny garbage we find in random PUGs, but nothing to give a thumbs up to the good people you meet when PUG'ing. They can be a rare breed - So post your appreciation for the people who made your PUG tolerable!

Just back from 3-4 PC Plat runs with "flopflop2", "nadoptXtuga" and "Drackh".
They didn't seem to mind my 120 N7 or 1500 CP - And didn't kick me or complain when I was averaging 80-100k scores (often last) with my undergeared characters.

First game was a revivefest all around - But we went for 2-3 more and kicked some arse. Was a lot of fun - If you read this, thanks chaps - I was that teal coloured humfemsol spamming conc shots like a lunatic and proccing everyones snap-freeze or fiery explosions - Probably why they all x 1.5 or x 2.0 my scores seeing as I just get 'assist' spam :P

I don't think we failed a single extraction, which was pleasant.

There is only a dislike button for PUGs. The "like" button does not exist.

Back in one of my first recent Platinum games there was that Juggy who dedicated himself exclusively on atracting Banshees and Phantoms and torture them until I put them out of their misery. He never fell dead, too. I highly doubt I'd have survived that match without him D:

Sadly, I don't remember his nick...

This is a great thread idea but i doubt you'll get many responses because most pugs are just.. bad.

That being said, I have encountered quite a few very skilled players who seem to just wander around pug land without being active on GFaqs or BSN. Most of those are high leaderboard guys, they don't tend to post on forums much for some reason.

I raise my space beer in salute to every pug I've ever played with who put earnest effort into the game, no matter what their level of skill, manifest, or CP.

When I was playing a lot last year I was consistently surprised by the friend requests I'd randomly get on Origin after some games went well. The reason I say this is because my mic has never worked in ME3MP. Albeit I listen to music while I play so I don't terribly mind. So I'm mute the entire match, and oftentimes so is the other player, but I'd meet a few, and the games would go so smoothly but more than that our playstyles/kits/etc would sync up well.

I also learned that you can convey an awful lot by shooting, rolling, or meleeing. Although the line gets hazy somewhere between "I'm happy you're here and I'm shooting you to say so" and the, "****** off and die I'm shooting at you" at the ammo-crate/watercooler between waves.

I always enjoy that random volus who shows up, sticks to my ass like it'd cure the volus-cancer that he has, and shield boosts/uses me for cover. (When I'm on my paladin) I know what to do if I get locked out and being able to play aggressively in melee on a paladin is one of my favourite things in this game. Maybe the favourite thing. Worst comes to worst I get locked out of my powers so I shield bash more mooks off things. I know a lot of people hate it but I think the benefits outweigh the problem that really doesn't arise more than a few times a match anyways, and is easy to fix.

Had a great game last week where we got 10WS - a miracle for a pug. Couldn't remember their names unfortunately.

But how will PUGs be able to see the nice things we say about them if they don't visit the forum? :P

Maybe they just keep quiet once they see the fun anti-PUG threads :P

I always thought the definition of PUG was someone who doesn't look at the forum.

I don't know though, the definition has always been vague to me.

I always thought the definition of PUG was someone who doesn't look at the forum.

I don't know though, the definition has always been vague to me.

PUG: Pick Up Group - Term for a matching system, where people queue up, and the game finds others in a similar queue and puts them all together in a game/match/dungeon or whatever group-content the game supplies. It's basically a shortcut so that people don't have to go through the hassle of organizing proper groups in-game or through external media, even if doing so usually gets better results as you can plan, or at least get to know who you're playing with.

Unlike games like WoW, which tries to match groups based on gear level or stats - ME3MP doesn't care if you're a level 1 newcomer or a 15k CP grinder - You'll be put wherever people need you. The first PUG I signed up for put me in Platinum at level 1 for my first ever game of ME3 Multiplayer. It wasn't a pleasant experience for me, nor the poor people who had to carry my noob ass at the time.

Most commonly associated with MMORPGs where players queue up to find 'randoms' to fill dungeon groups, but it applies to most things.

It is also the reason why most peoples experience of PUG'ing content is negative - because the majority of good players stick with premade groups, or are competent solo, whereas every joe soap, from goof to terribad (usually terribad), will just want to sign up and dive right into gameplay without a second thought.

People like me. I've no ME3MP friends - And I doubt any good players would let me in on their premades, so I just prepare my character and dive right into Any/Any/(Desired Difficulty).

I make an effort and accept my character/skill level is not top notch - So it's easy for me to make threads that appreciate it when you finally get a 'nice' PUG who make for a fun match.

There are so many good PUGs I've played with despite the ratio of good to bad pugs being pretty small.

Three memorable games come to mind:

1. I was searching for a pug and dropped into a lobby with bauzabauza (a BSNer). Since he was playing a melee krosent, I switched to my melee krosent. After the first game, the host switched to a warlord, and then the fourth pug also switched to a krogan, and the host even preset the enemy to geth. It was one of the best pugs ever - especially when the pugs actually participate in all the headbutt/krogan antics etc. This gif sums it up:

51pp4m.jpg

2. Probably the quickest pug ever - glacier/collectors took 15 minutes or so. It is pretty quick for a collectors game. I was the third person to drop into a lobby with 2 biotic users. I switched to a smashguard and the fourth pug, who initially dropped with a non-biotic character switched to a biotic character. Can't exactly recall their names or the characters they used but I think everyone got 50 assists and there were atleast 2 gold biotic kill medals. Boom, boom, boom, collectors got rekt, mission successful.

3. This was a more recent one. We almost got 10 WS, almost. The krogan warlord died to the last banshee on w10 of a gold game. Such troll but still the game took about 17 minutes (lolgiant/lolreapers). But ~10 WS with pugs without any communication is quite good.

There are so many other games where the pugs really made the game enjoyable. While such instances are not very common, they do happen time and again. And in general, my PUG experiences were always pretty decent. Some of the horrible PUGs people here experience (based on their posts) stay away from me. The number of pugs that made me flip out are quite few. May be it's just my luck or that people who rant here exaggerate a bit. :P Whatever be the case, I'll admit that my luck with pugs has generally been good.

 I'm the sensitive type who would list everyone I ever played with (even the assholes), so I'll just post this in tribute:

love PUGs. Really, I do. Diving into the unknown in pug-land is an integral part of the fun for me. It's like a fresh spin of the roulette wheel for every single match (some kind of PUG-Roulette game based on participation/extractions actually sounds kinda fun).

By and large most pugs mean well (in my experience) - even if they don't know all of the game's nuances. Most pugs gear up and give it the college try. Also, in my experience, most pugs want to learn and get better, and are very receptive to advice given when it is asked for. Sure, there are leechers and trolls - but most of the randoms I come across just want to play a game and have fun.

I wouldn't have truly learned how to play the game if not for pug-land. I've had plenty of random pugs carry me when I was learning and gaining experience, and I still get carried from time to time even now. On the flip side, I don't mind carrying them when necessary - especially the nice ones. Plus I get to feel like I'm actually decent at this game if I carry haha (hey, I have an e-peen and am as human as the next).

On a personal note, I didn't really have many friends on my friends list when I started playing this game b/c I didn't really play multiplayer games. Now I have more listed than I ever thought I would and the great majority of those were once ME3MP pugs. I never really cared for making xbox live friends, but it's pretty cool :)

So, here's to you random PUG - keep equipping an SMG amp when using an Indra II and keep fighting the good fight. I'm happy to fight alongside you (and keep reviving you).

I remember running into Quetzalcoatl quite a few times, before Collectors were around. The amount of times I've accidentally led banshees towards him is....unforgivable. Quetzal, if you ever read this, my apologies!

There's one pug in particular I run into quite a few times who's name is something along the lines of sabrequeen(and then followed by a lot of numbers). Every time I run into this person the game instantly becomes a nightmare  Even with the exact same people I just had a smooth game with. It's not that they're bad, it's we just we get screwed over by the worst luck.

GG's badluck pug!

Actually the "Your last PUG in one word" isn't a negative thread about PUGs, you're totally free to share your good experiences in this topic. But it's true that an important proportion of posters use it to vent, IMO because games with problems are more memorable than smooth games.

As for me, yes, I've encountered some leechers, cheaters, players who don't want to gear up, use a single consumable in game or simply lack skills, but in my experience they are only a little minority. The great majority of players I've met in PUGs were cooperative and decent players. The games where I had to solo a wave or got the 15 revives medal* are very rare.

*And not because I don't revive, because it was not needed lol !

no cliche kits with the exception of mine an aggro drawing spitfire juggy

I only got top score because I rocketed two wave ten targets and got killstreaks

True, but the topic isn't specifically to be positive about them, either. Even I use it to vent :P
I had posted some of my own 'appreciation' posts in there, but they get lost in the sea of off-topic side-chat or the latest funny post about how bad a PUG was!

I figured hey, may as well just make a thread specifically for those PUGS that made the game fun for you, however rare they may be :)
