There are so many other games where the pugs really made the game enjoyable. While such instances are not very common, they do happen time and again. And in general, my PUG experiences were always pretty decent. Some of the horrible PUGs people here experience (based on their posts) stay away from me. The number of pugs that made me flip out are quite few. May be it's just my luck or that people who rant here exaggerate a bit. :P Whatever be the case, I'll admit that my luck with pugs has generally been good.

Same here, no complaints about my luck playing with random groups.

Just had another couple of largely smooth & enjoyable random matches on Giant/Cerberus and Ghost/Collectors :) and would have stayed for more but got DC´d.

True, but the topic isn't specifically to be positive about them, either. Even I use it to vent :P
I had posted some of my own 'appreciation' posts in there, but they get lost in the sea of off-topic side-chat or the latest funny post about how bad a PUG was!

I figured hey, may as well just make a thread specifically for those PUGS that made the game fun for you, however rare they may be :)

Sure, nice initiative.

PUGging in an MMPORPG like WoW or SWTOR is just no.  Horrible idea that never ends well.

In ME3 it's tolerable because it's usually over in 30 minutes rather than 4 hours

OT:  I've got nothing.  PUGS are PUGS BECAUSE they are bad.  If they were decent they'd form a real group

Addendum:  I PUG a lot of games.  When I join the lobby, THEY become the PUGS, even if they are a group.

PUGs are usually only bad because the pool can range from one end of the spectrum or the other (by nature, we'll always have more new/inexperienced than we will active/pros [who probably stick to premades anyways]). It is also a lot more in-depth than some people expect, thus research is a benefit a lot of people skip over on the assumption that we've played SP, so we must know everything about MP. Obviously this is a very bad mentality to have.

Despite all that, I don't hold it against the players just because any uncoordinated group will always under-perform over a coordinated one with competent / experienced players by default - That's not the PUG people's fault - But they can be blamed if they intentionally make it harder for those actually making a solid effort and rely on the system to get any kind of group going, in which case life becomes hard/frustrating.

On-Topic - Just duo'd a Silver with Marksmad from the forums to pass some time, so shout-out to him - He got to see my fun N7 Demo antics, and I got to flesh out a few more CP's and practice for future solo runs - Was a lot of fun. No communication at all but we knew how to get the job done, and did so.

Did you just call me a pug???? I challenge you to a duel across time and space!!  :D

Seriously, was fun, and you do good as an arc nade spamming demogirl. Between your arc nades and my TSent's chain overload, those poor Geth.

'... those poor Geth.'

^Unless we're talking about Legion and the single player geth the words "those poor Geth" should never be uttered.

PUG: Pick Up Group - Term for a matching system, where people queue up, and the game finds others in a similar queue and puts them all together in a game/match/dungeon or whatever group-content the game supplies.

Actually, that is called "automated matchmaking system". I've played WoW right 'till auto MM got introduced there and the term "PUG" existed nevertheless. Instead of waiting for MM to find us the team we were trying to contact other directly and invite them. Whenever those were just random strangers just passing through - it was a "PUG". I'm sure that the term is much older than WoW too, considering that "group" wasn't common term for a "party" there.

There was (and is) a term "pub" as well, pretty much the same stuff, even though it's shorthand for "public game". Normally it's a term reserved for when people don't get into exclusively co-op environment and therefore not everyone involved ends up being in the same "group" / team. Granted, sometimes "PUG" is used as in: "Pick up game", making it applicable to this situation too.

Eh... On a side note, introduction of auto MM into WoW was one of those things that killed it for me. Someone doesn't like social features becoming less necessary in a MMO? What heresy it this?

Right?..

Nope, just giving a shout-out. You're the first person to have added me to list and to have played in a premade - So from here on, you are no longer eligible for pug shoutouts :P

People don't miss it until it's gone!

Well, off to buy 20million Jumbo Equipment packs >_>

Pugs = :wub: <3

Thank you for making the game million times better. If I only played with friends and did lots of solos I would have quit long time ago but the unpredictability of pugs has kept this game from ever getting old.

Today's been somewhat more successful than yesterday. One laggy match (still won) and managed to sneak out of very bad lobby's (2xPeople running platinum with level I starter weapons and amps etc).

Sadly, not had enough group consistency (or anything super noticeable) to give a shout-out for those in the good games we've had. I'll just give a shout-out to 'Sunday' instead.

Currently trying out the N7 Destroyer - Quite fun.

Shout out to Haojudai - You got to see my first ever MP 'last one alive and save the day' moments, where I proceed to actually win despite getting all nervous and ruining all my reload cancels in the face of Phantoms like a boss.

Shout out gets -1 point for hosting a new game only to leave on Round 2 - You cost me some much needed consumables, little Volus, but I'll forgive you for the pocket shields.

Today I've had 2 matches with people who shouldn't have been on Gold...the two of them on Giant (Hazard/Reapers, Normal/Geth), and they were....pretty noobish. I mean, noobish in the sense of "two of them less than 30k, one 80k-100k and me 175k-220k. Ah, and ALL 6 objectives were on me and the Valkyrie guy". There was a Krogan Warlord with a Spitfire (naturally, getting downed all the time), a Krogan Vanguard with a Disciple (melee build, I guess...also getting downed), and a Valkyrie (the 80k guy).

Thing is that they were pretty good at distracting enemies, and allowed me some nice clean shots. And although they fell a lot, and left us the Valkyrie and me many times to clutch the wave, at least they bothered using medi-gel (until they went out of it, I guess).

That's....about what good I can say about them, actually :D

Well it's something at least.
Above was my first 2 games of the day - And not the best of starts. Despite my first carry victory round, the rest still left the match so it became a duo, so a relatively new Infil + a Volus pocket shielder against glitching CerbPhantoms sniping people from 2miles away while we're all in an Atlas sandwich spawn sandwich.

But yes, could have been so much worse :P

Despite my first carry victory round

Your first clutched wave? Congrats :)

I still remember mine (I'll never forget how stressful it was): Reactor/Cerberus/Silver. With me playing a Volus Vanguard. I had to clutch against some Centurions and an Atlas. Ended up playing hide-and-seek with the Atlas for more than 5 minutes D: I swear, I sweat rivers to kill him.

My last one was more epic: Collectors/Vancouver/Gold, with the TGI-Saber. Half of Wave 7 to be clutched. Never stood a chance :)

Good ole Saber ^^

Aye, my first - Gold/Cerberus/Hydra. Team were largely sticking together and covering flanks from range but once wave 7 kicked in everyone was being cocky, except me - Eventually the team started getting picked off by Phantoms all around the map and seemed to under-appreciate just how much Phantoms hand-shots hurt (and how stupidly accurate they are), and most attempts to revive were being met by pure stunlockage, so I found myself all alone against two Atlases, 4-5 Engineers (2 of which had turrets in the open that I didn't notice at first), some Dragoons, quite a lot of sneaky Phantoms, a handful of campy Nemesis' and a few guardian stragglers.

First time I've cracked out my Infiltrator since promotion, so didn't have full kit, using a level III Sabre and some basic equipment. I was never very good with Infils as it's not my style so I don't really play/practice them much.

It'd be so easy for some, but I'm more of a support minded player, still learning the maps and trying to improve my weps/mods/gear, not much for raw damage or killing - Managed to pull it off with one medi-gel thanks to running headfirst into a waiting turret when trying to avoid Atlas/Banshee shots in the back when heading for cover.

It didn't take a major amount of time but I was nervous and being extremely cautious - And when it was all over, the entire team had left except for above mentioned Volus/PocketShielder. Our next round wasn't so lucky, though I attribute most of that to the fact he didn't seem to want to stick with me and we ended up doing our own thing, getting picked off with random snipes from all angles.

Heh, you already did it way better than I'd have done it. I hate Cerberus with the Saber, as I use a Overload-less TGI (yep, I know it's odd, but I've never managed to blend Overload with the TGI in a way I'm satisfied), so I depend on raw accuracy in order to kill stuffz. And Cerberus have Phantoms, Nemesis, Dragoons...who all move freakin' annoyingly fast.

So when I enter a lobby and I see Cerberus, I change to the Harrier. And if it's random and that's what I get....I call it &%$#@. I'm not completely bad against Cerberus with the Saber, but...I'm not me :(

I don't remember the names, but I'd like to give a shout-out to three PUGs I played with today. Thank you for dying and bleeding out within first ten second of the second wave, you saved me half an hour of my life and all the consumables I would have wasted trying to carry you if you had used medigel. Fail fast, fail hard.

I'd love to talk about good PUGs but they are boring. Just guys who score a lot, do objectives, usually spam rockets on wave 11 to outscore me. I don't remember having real teamwork in PUGs, like switching classes to improve team synergy. Unlucky me, I guess.

For some reason, I thought it read: Pug shoot out thread

haha, same.

On topic, I have never shared the anti-pug sentiment that has dominated this forum.  Although lately, pug haters seem to be way less frequent.  For me, playing with random people has always been one of the most engaging aspects of the game.  Its one of the main reasons I keep coming back.  Each game is unique, each group does something a little different, and I am constantly being challenged to adapt and think on my feet.

I think that far too often when a game ends poorly, its just easier to blame others.  Whereas I am the type of person that blames myself.  Regardless of what some other player did or didnt do, I take it upon myself to find the solution which will allow the team to reach extraction.  Its like a puzzle to be solved.

Unless you play with friends, you're gonna have a hard time finding any real synergy in randoms. In 300 hours, I only recall 3 or 4 times.

A pity. I admit I'd love to play more those kind of organized matches.

I like a good balance - Because each type has its own fun.

You can sit down with a team, plot all your strengths and cover weaknesses, work on synergy and test out strategies. You're not going to compete with the clock without it.

Then you have the PUG factor, where most people have their choice of character/class set in stone and aren't likely to change. You'll be thrust into new compositions with people of varied skill and teamplay, whether it's a bunch of solo-rambos, or that 3xVolus fan-club who loves staring at your butt-crack for the entire match just because it's how they like to play.

Can't agree with this - Because good PUGs are rare. Just being thrown into a random lobby with random people that just happens to 'work' despite lack of communication and no planning is always refreshing and usually quite fun.

I've been pugging almost exclusively for the last 6 months or so. And while the players are generally lacking skill or common sense it's how I prefer to play. It's...pure I guess. Playing in loaded and stacked teams sends me into auto pilot, I can do like 2-3 of those games.

But finding a group of blue chip players out there, that will trust you with their time and consumables is awesome. I love finding that group and rattling off 6 matches  and getting that "gg" message. And not to mention being that wave 2.5 difference maker after dropping in late. Reinforcements for real. I love it...

I have a long list of pug-stars from my many months of preferring good players. I'll start posting from here on out.
