Liara making a return only makes sense if the game is set within her natural lifespan, and the plot requires you to either seek out a Prothean expert or to deal with the Shadow Broker's network in some way.

The latter would be a bit trickier however, because the identity of the Shadow Broker should be unknown to whoever the protagonist is. The only way that would work was if the protagonist thought they were meeting a go between or some mid-level person within the Shadow Broker network similar to Barla Von, and never finds out they actually met the Broker.

In either case any cameos of previous companion characters should only occur if it makes sense within the story for them to be there, and to meet the protagonist. They shouldn't just be forced in for the sake of nostalgia. If you have characters return without a reason within the story for those meetings, you end up making the galaxy seem much smaller than it should by filling it with random encounters.

I've seen a few male batarians suggested here. It would be interesting if there was a batarian on the team, but I would prefer it never be included as a romance. After reading Revelation (Groto trying to assault/rape a human female prostitute), listening to Talitha's story (possibly raped by batarian slavers), and Jack's prison incident (raped by prisoners and guards...batarian, human, whatever), I always get bad feelings around batarian males/mercs. I know this is biased based on what I have seen and read, but still...I guess we will see.

Yeah, a few bad apples don't tell the story of an entire species, of billions of individuals. Assuming the timeline is advanced (and enough individuals survived to sustain the species), I'd like to see what becomes of the Batarians without the Hegemony. They might end up being pretty amenable to peaceful reintegration into galactic society. I also think a Batarian crew member is overdue.

Maybe it's best if the Broker falls silent after the Reaper War. They sort of ruined the mystery and coolness of the role by making Liara the Broker. If the Broker is still around, they should leave the identity of the individual (or group) completely unknown. There's no need to tell us whether or not Liara is still the Broker in the next game. If the Broker comes up, there should be no allusion to his or her identity or motivations. Let it simply be an info exchange, like the old days.

I think they ruined it with the DLC, which basically revealed that the Shadow Broker network was basically a better funded mookcenary group led by Bowser.

If there is a new group I agree that they should be left mysterious.

Hopefully there's no callbacks. No returning characters. They had their adventure. I don't want to see any of them in the new game. Bioware already made the universe seem small enough. Time to broaden horizons.
