In interviews it has been stated that if you cheat on your ME1 love interest it may have repercussions in ME3. The creators said that they can track this through Achievements.
I'm just curious on how this works because on XBox achievements are ID related. Also they stay after saving, so say I romance someone but decide I want to stick with my ME1 romance and load and this time don't romance that character. Will ME3 then think that I have cheated?

I think what they mean is per play through its calculated, as in if you cheat on the save you eventually transfer to ME3 its going to matter. Also they may just give statistically how many people who played ME cheated in ME2.

When and where did they say that romances would be achievement-based? Does this mean our relationships won't carry over into Mass Effect 2 if we didn't complete the subplots?

Maybe I misread, but it was something about how via achievements they would be able to tell who cheated on their ME1 love interest. I guess it doesn't mean that the romances only depend on achievements. To me it just seemed like if you had people who played through a lot and romanced everyone you would assume through achievements they cheated, but they could all just be different characters.
I assume they have thought this out though and it's probably only tied to the save.

That's what multiple playthroughs/save files are for. I want to see what happens in ME3 if I stay with Liara through the whole trilogy, but no way am I passing up a Tali romance.
