I think it was stated someplace that you don't NEED Lyrium to be a Templar. It only augments the abilities.
So, if I remember correctly, a templar without Lyrium is merely weaker than a templar with Lyrium.

In the comic "Those Who Speak," they showed how he needed lyrium to maintain his Templar powers... I just go by that.
edit: Actually, here is a link to a post that contains a Gaider quote... this should make things pretty clear: http://forum.bioware...8#entry17303011

I'm not sure but doesn't he explain that he hadn't stated consuming lyrium as he was taken in by the Grey Wardens. Either way hes dead in my game trolololol, he won't be needing any lyrium.

How do you kill him?

How do you kill him?
You let Anora execute him after the Landsmeet... but since it's offscreen, the best way to make sure he's dead is let him kill the Archdemon (no Dark Ritual, obviously...).

Simply apply some betrayal to his face during the landsmeet. I.E. Either become the king alongside Anora, or allow Anora to rule by herself and also allow Loghain to live (That amazing man) and then allow Allistairs execution to happen = Good times.

Yeah, Ig uses if it's off screen there is no 100% certainty that he is executed.

I always felt that doing that, might come back to bite you.

It's funny because literally no one cares that hes executed. I wouldn't be surprised if he still lives with a giant beard telling crazy stories about his mate betraying him inside some sort of prison.

Recently I've been wondering about that as well... It's unfortunate that Bioware cannot be trusted to keep major characters dead in subsequent games, so the only way to guarantee that Alistair dies is if he kills the Archdemon. Probably.

Alistair had stopped consuming lyrium by the time of Origins. His Templar abilities most likely stopped eventually because they can last a good time after, but not forever. While people who stay Templars can become addicted to the substance, he never even took his official vows so I strongly doubt he was using it for long or had any attachment to lyrium at all. Maybe the darkspawn taint could have extended the amount of time he could use his powers without lyrium, but I'm not sure.

Well the comics say he's taking Lyrium again to use his abilities.

Yeah, that makes sense. I figure that eventually (sometime after Origins) he stopped being able to use them so he had to start using it again.

I totally think Alistair was snorting my Mage's Lyrium bottles all throughout Origins.
MagePC: GET AWAY FROM MY STASH!
Alistair: Oh come on! You have so many!

In Dragon Age Origins, Alistair a former Templar explains and teaches us the specialization to us we wish, yet not once do we see him consuming lyrium to access or augment his abilities. I theorize that the Darkspawn Taint in his blood acts as an alternative source of power, allowing to use his abilities without needing lyrium. As stated by Avernus the Taint is a source of great power when used correctly and completely foreign to demons. What do you guys think?
Close. Calenhad Reaver blood.

Everybody here's watched Gladiator right? Knowing how much of a writer's pet he is I expect no less than a "I am Alistair Theirin, Warden-Commander of Ferelden" speech if he was 'executed'.

The problem with Alistair is you can't do Expanded Media with the Warden so Alistair is some sort of weird Hero of Fereldan Substitute in Silent Grove.
Rhys is basically MageWarden.
It's kind of surreal.
I wish they'd make a "Gaideverse" Hero and Hawke so they can show up.

Hmm. Yes that would explain it. The Dragon Blood, in conjunction with the Darkspawn/Archdemon blood he obtained via the Joining would act as a substitute for lyrium. He is one special snowflake.

Alistair isn't a Reaver. His blood just works extra-special good for Blood Magic.

It appears, though, that Calenhad passed something along to the rest of his line that normal people don't have.

In DAO, they said you don't need it but then retconned it after so you do need lyrium now to be a Templar.

Yes, although they claim that they wanted to include it in the game mechanics from the start but that idea got scrapped...

How many times does this stupid argument need to be made.
Alistair lied to the PC, He was getting high all game, this explains a lot, Lyrium is required.

Perhaps the Bioware will make up its mind this Inquisition.
Oh and I want my Isabela.
