Don't forget about her orlesian accent.
I am really hoping she's not Satele Shan and in her sixties yet ridiculously hot.
But I suspect she will be.

Nor do mages have that ability under the Chantry. Born a mage? Whelp, to the tower you go.
It's just that the Chantry limits their Qun-like practices to mages.
I got to "Alistai's mother" before I threw up my hands.
Having made the mistake myself on several occasions, characters being ham-fisted into having deep personal connections to established characters is a road to terrible writing.
Mages still have opportunities (greater ones most likely) for advancement and ambition, they can have relationships, etc... You can't compare the Chantry's treatment of mages to the Qun's
aye

I'm sure she'd have discovered somehow the secrets of immortality and everlasting youth.

I'm not saying it's IMPOSSIBLE.
But this is not the Witcher.
:-)
Mages don't use their magic for beauty creme or Irving wouldn't look like he does.

Pfft I highly doubt Morrigan will have herself looking like an old crone at 60. I think it's more whether the mage is willing to use magic to make themselves youthful.
The important thing to remember is the Chantry wants mages alive and loyal to the Chantry.
The common man in Thedas wants wizards dead and murdered.
Which is the biggest problem with Mage freedom.
The Chantry making sure that Thedas wants wizards dead and buried in the first place, I'd say.
By the way, about Bethany finding the Circle a place of acceptance and joy... what did you do in your playthrough? In mine she reminisces on the days the Hawke's spend on the run from the Chantry and actually misses those days. The only good part about being locked up in the Circle for her was seeing the need to free her fellow mages from its chains.

How can she even be Alistair's mother?
If that's who she is, then who was the brother Goldanna was paid coin to keep silent about? Who is the woman Alistair believed was his mother?
What was that whole plot point?
I just don't understand.
Bethany also says to Anders "I could pretend to be miserable, but I'm not" and to Aveline "The idea of the Circle was far more terrifying than the reality."

It was all smoke and mirrors apparently.
Why bother going through all those theatrics I don't understand.

Because a House Maid mother didn't fit the idea of Maric as they developed him who wasn't the "love em and leave em" type.
But they decided to make Alistair's mother the First Enchanter, an elf, and a Grey Warden too.
....
Okay!
his point was that circle life full of luxugies that most mundanes lack. Its going to ne different for each mageThe Chantry making sure that Thedas wants wizards dead and buried in the first place, I'd say. I mean...I can't get over the whole lol I'm cured of the taint thing.
I just...what.
Even AVERNUS with all his research only managed to delay it.
It was Fiona's wish for Alistair to be ignorant of who his real mother is. Why? I think she just enjoys being miserable and living a telenovela.
lol

on top of being a former slave who was abused then killed her abuser

Well considering she handed him to Eamon and that witch Isolde if I was Alistair and met her I just might punch her in the face.
on top of being a former slave who was abused then killed her abuser
I have no issue with this. Because well we have companions that do that so whatever. It's just when it piles on and her special snowflake ass avoids ghoul fate like every other damn warden willing or no I just...that's bull.

I'd actually be fine with her character if she wasn't Alistair's mother. She wouldn't be anywhere close to my favorite, but I wouldn't feel uneasy about accepting her existence.
If a side character's more of a sue than a BW protagonist something has gone terribly wrong.
