*Inquisitor is whining at Andraste* 'DO I HAAAAVE TO BE THE HERALD!?"

*Andraste flatly looks at them, completely stone faced* "Yes... Yes you do"

Inquisitor: "AWWWWWWWWWE"

Andraste: "No Whining my Will Be Done"

Inquisitor: "But-"

Andraste: "Let.My.Will.Be.Done, Inquisitor"

Inquisitor: "...fiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiine" *Is Mopy and Emo for the rest of the game*

No, see, Andraste would just threaten to stuff an Andraste's Pyre down the Inquisitor's throat.  Or, she'd do it once and that would be the end of the whining, moping, and emo'ing for the rest of the game.

so with threads like these popping up, im assuming people had problems in the past games being called the champion and the warden?  Its just a damn nickname people, it has nothing to do with any of your religious views, its there, its been written in, get over it

To be fair, while I agree it's probably futile to complain about it, as I don't see Bioware changing it, there's a difference between Champion or Warden and Herald.  The other two titles were for all intents neutral, but this new title is religious in nature, and the arguments against it do have some legitimacy.  The story behind it may provide context that changes things up somewhat, but as it stands now, it IS a little odd that people could be playing characters that have backgrounds putting them outside of Chantry influence, being known as the herald of Andraste.  Beyond that, it also does seem to invalidate the idea that characters could be rp'd as being unsympathetic to the Chantry. Granted, the latter is not a given, because of the possible context, but it's certainly reasonable that people might be a little disappointed because the implication is definitely there.

And to be frank, I did have some issues with being called Warden in DA:O.  It's obvious why that title was used, but that doesn't change the fact that a great many of the instances of the PC being called "Warden" were quite awkward because people just don't speak that way naturally.

I'm guessing that the Inquisitor is going to be referred to as the Herald as Andraste no matter what.  The Chantry is going to put you forth as that regardless I think and the people will eat it up.  It is going to be a hard time in the world for Thedas so having hope that the Maker or Andraste have marked someone to help save the world is not a bad thing.  I'm sure you can pretty much try to reject the Herald of Andraste thing as much as possible but it's probably not going to affect things much.  If it does, then it would probably cause the public to be fearful about the situation more and probably more panicky as well.

It's the connotations in the title, mainly. And previous titles had them too.

The Hero of Ferelden got that title by protecting Ferelden from the Blight. Even if the character didn't have any special sympathy for the country, they still saved Ferelden. The Champion of Kirkwall earned it by protecting Kirkwall from the Qunari attack. Again, no matter if Hawke hated the Kirkwallers' guts. Since there was no way out from Ferelden or Kirkwall in previous games, you had to deal with it.

But Ferelden and Kirkwall were just places. Andraste is a prophet for the main religion in Thedas. What will we do in DA:I that deserves such a title? Let's not forget that in the past Cassandra saved the Divine during the ten-year gathering from dragons and a pride demon, yet she earned the more neutral title "Hero of Orlais" (still ironic; she's Nevarran and her country is a bitter rival of Orlais).

As I suggested once before - I think there will be two ways to take "Herald of Andraste"

Andraste, Prophet of the Maker

and

Andraste, Mage Liberator

I think pursuing these two avenues would make everyone happy.  Herald is a neutral term, it possesses absolutely no specifically religious connotations.  It is how you interpret Andraste that would be the most relevant.  After all - if I'm not mistaken, there's an Avvar soldier in the video who calls you "The Herald" - the Avvar don't practice Andrastianism - they worship their own gods (the ones Andraste herself first served).

I think people are making WAY too much of this - and are projecting their own real world issues into this.

That just about sums up one view of the situation...

Nah I'm all set with being the Herald. The ignorant masses can refer to me as her herald, but truth be told I despise the false Prophetess. Herald of Dumat and Loyal Tevinter.

Personally I don't mind being called that at all. The reason being that the Chantry itself isn't the 'evil' hand behind the Templars. Its the radicals and fanatics that make the chantry seem evil. If you guys read any of the book you'd see that from they way the divine acts. She dosn't like how the Templars treat the mages either.

The Templars also broke away from the chantry because the divine was trying to stop them from just killing the mages because of what Anders did. The Templars want to get rid of the Divine and put someone new on the Throne someone more like sister Petrice who was an ani-qunari fanatic.

So to sum up I wouldn't mind being called that as long as people know its because I stand with the Divines view on the mage/Templar fight. And just to let you guys know I hate the chantry more then any other religion in the game (including the old god one).

All I know is I'm going to make at least one male character and name him Harold, just so I can laugh every time it's said during the game.

Those names don't really force an ideology onto the PC though; my personal lack of faith aside, I don't want my M!Cadash Inquisitor to have Andraste shoved down his throat. As much as I'm sure she'd enjoy it. :P

With me its more of the case that I won't care that she picked me or whatever I have the power to stop the rifts so I will stop them. If I had the choice I would prefer not to be called herald since my character is not really a believer in the chantry etc he would prefer to be called inquisitor.

Would be nice if non-believers of Andraste could beat up anyone who calls them the "Herald". Dalish, Tal-Vashoth and Dwarves would not be Andrastian.

Almost any possible Inquisitor I would play would either scorn or laugh at that title, so....
