So what's in it for the dwarfs?

With the confirmation that Varric isn't a romance option and that getting a green glowing chunk of raw Fade power embedded into your palm still isn't enough of a connection to the Fade to become a mage, a thought occurred to me.

What's in this game for the dwarfs?

Every race seems to get something shiny to toy with. Humans are jacks of all trade as usual, being able to do (almost) everything. Qunari get... well, a freshly playable race for one, with probably a lot of interesting conversation options. Elves get a potentially very interesting outlook on mages (since the elf mage is a keeper and not a Circle mage) and recently revealed Solas as a love interest.

But we haven't heard anything as to what interesting racial story bits dwarfs will be able to sink their teeth in. And being the curious and impatient beardling I am, I am curious.

Very large magic resistance this game. Probably some cool stuff with the Carta?

As of now my plays will be elf, qunari then human (if not needing a break after the first 2 runs) so dwarf is on the bottom of my list. I loved my dwarf in DA:O both starting stories were so interesting but I hated the no dwarf romance. I tried all the options but always got tired of them (hated the height difference)...so she was forever alone. I'll just have to see if I get around to a dwarf character or not when I find out more, but right now I'm just not feeling it.

This outlook is a bit too negative considering it's based mainly on assumptions.  We have no idea which race will have the most interesting dialogue options and aside from wielding magic, there's nothing the other races will have access to that dwarves won't.  We do know that each race will have some war table missions based no their background, but that includes the dwarves.  Personally I think the dwarven Carta background is far more interesting than the fairly generic Vashoth mercenary background, but that is just a matter of taste.  If you take a step back and look at the races again, you'll likely come to realize that the dwarves haven't been left out.

Being a dwarf, dangit.

That's enough!

I do have a preference for hooking elves up with elves and humans up with humans. So I feel mildly oppressed by not having a cute dwarf dude who wants to hang out with my growly tank girl. But not hugely so. There's probably a limit to sanity of developers and so on.

*cough* That being said, there were a lot of moments that I felt pandered to being a dwarf in Awakening and Origins (especially Awakening as a Casteless homigawd Sigrun as ultimate DA bro forever!) so I'm sure my shin-breaking carta girl will have many dwarf moments. Also, you're going to be shorter than anyone in your party (except maybe Varric) and yet stronger than anyone in your party (except maybe Iron Bull). And you'll have the general dwarf bonus to awesome on top of a pretty decent racial bonus. So I think you'll be good!

I know I will be, with the return of my nugthumping ways.

I'm looking forward to playing a dual-wielding Cadash.  The carta's involvement in the lyrium trade might factor into the mage/templar war, or trade connections could make diplomatic wartable missions more relevant.  Perhaps there will be trade missions with Orzammar or Kal-Sharok?  If so, Josephine is going to wind up being my go-to adviser for my dwarf inquisitors.

honestly I was so set on a dwarf for Varric I never let myself entertain the notion it would not be possible.  SO I have no incentive to play a dwarf with their gorilla arms. Now that may change as more details come out but I have always preferred elves where possible.

@Frostjulie: Embrace the joy of tanking as a dwarf. You will not regret protecting your squishy party from thigh height.

I worry about this, however unfairly since it's way too early to know, because I am so attached to dwarves. I really do hope they get some cool race specific content. I will play as one even if it's the most overlooked and underdeveloped race but....I really don't want that!

Dwarves get the awesomeness of being a Dwarf, probably some unique banter/dialogue with Varric, and plenty of sass!

Them's the breaks when you play the least popular race. Implied awesomeness is your reward.

The chance to appreciate John Epler's hard work with the Bull.

Also, the concept art showed what appeared to be a dwarven settlement (or ruins), so maybe some extra dwarf-related content with that?

I'm hoping dwarves get a lot of stuff with the Carta and maybe get some bonuses when dealing with Orzammar representatives, but I doubt it will be a lot. I like playing dwarves anyway. My second playthrough is going to be a dwarven lady who romances Iron Bull.

Well darn, I was hoping for a bonus step ladder so I could at least look my love interest in the eye...

Now it's going to be  " Why yes Mr. Bull (Blackwall) that is a lovely codpiece you're wearing, is it an Orleasian design?"

Well, there were no other races to start with... so the dwarves get Existence... they get To Be as it were.

Anyway, here's hoping for some more dwarf DLC, like with the Golems one from DA:O, but more Kal Sharok focused.

I hope that the Carta is more than just background story. Being a dwarf in Origins really set you apart, with tons of unique dialog choices in regards to the Chantry and the Maker and a vastly different outlook on the Orzammar plot.

Negative it may be, it is not without reason. So far all we have actually heard confirmed about dwarfs is exclusion, being the only race that has a class denied and the only race that doesn't have a romance option of their own race. Which worries me that being a dwarf is going to be 'exactly like the other races, only less.'

Which is why I'm asking if there's anyone who can confirm that there's a unique twist to playing a dwarf. Even something like unique dialog options would help a ton, especially since dwarfs literally have nothing to do with the Maker and his bride.

Without Varric to romance as an incentive I don't have a lot of reason to play a dwarf but this could change if a) extra sass towards the Chantry, qunari, humans, magic and elves everyone. b)Options for the carta and the merchants guild.

A dwarf that's in it for the world domination could be fun but it's not high on my list of pc I want to play.

Being a dwarf is it's own reward. The other, inferior races have to live with the constant regret of never having been born a dwarf .
