Personally. I hope they do like they did in the Mass Effect III MP. they had a male and female representative of each class. I am hopeful that they will add more as the packages are introduced. like M.E I view this as the starting point. I will play the Hunter for launch. and hopefully he is as cool. as I think he could be. :)

Male Asari and female Geth biotics confirmed?

Other than rogues, which was kinda weird. It seems each gender represents a subtype but surprised rogues have 2 female duel weilders and 2 male archers.

You can already play those.

We have male arcane warrior. What more do you want?

A female arcane warrior would be nice.

I also notice that each gender has two rogues, two warriors, and two mages. Each gender has four humans and two non-humans. The only 'inequality' one could complain about is that there are no male elves or female qunari.

But let's keep pretending that it could have NEVER have been done with no need for specific genders, period, tied to certain classes or races right?

I wouldn't be surprised if future DLC provided those.

It shouldn't require future DLC. There was absolutely no need for tying characters to specific genders.

This isn't the Asari or Geth or Vorcha, where there is effectively either one gender(Asari) or no real gender (Geth+Vorcha). Considering the relative lack of creativity in the names we've seen so far, they could simply have just called the characters a generic nom de guerre and given players a male/female toggle.

DA MP is very balanced. Given that several other franchises have decided to make all their multiplayer characters male, I consider the even-handedness praiseworthy.

The fact that you feel the need to "praise" the decision to force players to play genders they might not want to play as in order to play a character they would like to play is ridiculous.

Effectively I have 5 characters that I will not ever be touching.

But these characters do have personalities and will be talking to one another, as in they have voice actors and backstories. They will have a gender, and I think she praised them because instead of everyone being male and thus locking ALL characters from some of their players, they are locking half from each player that has issue playing another gender. Being able to play half is better than not being able to play any, which is the case for many MMOs. Several people like the idea of the MP because of these new characters, and whether it is a bad idea or a good one, it was the decision that costs a bit of customablility. I don't think there could be a "gender toggle" by going this direction, not without a bunch more dollars and effort.

If characters with personalities with their own stories goes well, they made the right decision and will lure single players into Multiplayer, if not then I am sure next MP will have the old way of doing things back.

Again, pretending that a gender toggle couldn't have been done.

Go read the backstory on "Silver", the Assassin.

Tell me that any of the character backstories we have received so far could not be done with a nom de guerre replacing the proper names. It would have been a really simple thing to create a backstory where you did not have a single gender taking precedence over another.

But Voice Actors, hiring only actors who can sound gender Nuetral isn't really easy. Never mind that when they talk other stuff may come up and always avoiding pronouns is pretty hard.

It could have been done but it would ruin any chance of them having a character to begin with.

Nobody said anything about "actors who can sound gender neutral".

Pretending that a generic backstory like what we have seen so far is "character" is detrimental to the idea of a "character".

Gender is a part of a character, so yes, it is detrimental as society forces different norms on you.

Besides, if they wanted to gender toggle, they wouldn't have given them backstories to begin with. This rant is silly.

Continue being silly without me, though.

Hey, we get more male representation in the companions and women get more representation in the MP characters. Seems fair to me.

This. So much this.

To be honest as long as it's not anything like a 9:1 ratio either way I don't really care.

So they hire twice as many actors to voice the same characters? These characters are voiced. They talk to one another. They use pronouns, they have voices. It is not cost effective for a gender toggle for all those characters. That is what I am saying.

Uhhuh.

You can argue that I might be wrong, but that would not be the truth. :)

Sure you can, but honestly, unless it is a pregnancy plot or has to do with sexism, that is true of most stories. But that still doesn't cover the fact that the characters are voiced and that makes a gender toggle very hard. Never mind what their banter may say and the amount of dialogue they do have with one another. Add in that that is extra models who each have their own unique look, hiring 2 actors to voice the same character, and rewrites about pronouns and revoicing them as well. If the characters flirt with one another using gendered endearments it becomes even more so. And there will just be more characters as this goes on, where they have to pay double for each character, and undermining what they are going for which is each character has a backstory.

During my recent survey of your planet, I determined that your male population outnumbers your female population 3,477,829,638 to 3,418,059,380, for a total gender disparity ratio of 102.

@ntrisley

You do realize that you could also flip around the gender for pretty much every BW SP character, right?  Would it work?  Maybe, but gender plays a significant role on one's personality.  It gives them a certain perspective that would change if their gender was swapped.  Saying that gender plays no role on a character's personality is just ridiculous.  It's like saying that a character's parents wouldn't affect their personality, yet we've seen plenty of character's who've had their perspective and/or personality shaped by their parents, whether directly or indirectly (Miranda, Liara, Ashley, Alistair, Isabela, Garrus, Joker, Wrex, Jacob, Leliana, Tali, Zevran, Morrigan, and many, many others).

BW made the characters they wanted to make for the MP.  If you can't deal with it, you should just completely ignore the MP.

Males are under-represented in, say, teaching preschool. But not in this videogame as a whole.
