It will be worthwhile doing some other things first.
Spoilers ahead.
Gorion has told you to go to the Friendly Arms Inn.
Outside the walls there is a ring that could take some finding, but can be sold for a fortune.
You could sneak past the mage at the entrance and inside there is a potion of healing.
You can either get Jaheira and Khalid to join you long enough to acquire their belongings, or if you don't wish to do that you could pickpocket them if your skills in that realm are good enough.
To the west of the courtyard is a door and inside you can meet Joia. She will give you a moderately easy task. In BG1 bows are very useful as you can kill without much danger if enemies do not possess ranged weapons. The guards will help you if they see enemies of yours.
You can then go to Beregost on the way to Nashkel.
There you will find lots of loot just waiting to be picked up, and a few people who want help.
Calm down a man called Marl.
Then try and help Firebead.
In the same inn as Marl is a man called Algernon. He has a cloak which is useful if you can get hold of it without him noticing, it is very useful.
With most thieving, the proficiencies that you have are important. If you are good at opening chests, do that; if good at pick-pocketing, do that.
