By all means, headcanon away - but demonic possession is not "rare".
It's common when there's a huge Veil breach, sure, but those themselves clearly aren't that common. I mean, we've seen two of those that led to possession so far (albeit one of them existing in perpetuity in Kirkwall), and the protagonists are naturally drawn to unusual trouble, being protagonists.

LoL possession is rare so why i had to fought so many abomnations? It isn't rare in any case in fact this happens often as we saw in different places and countries.
Or maybe he didn't practice blood magic that much. We don't know much on him. On one hand, Gregoir implies he was pretty powerful in the origin. Merrill had plot armor nothing more she was nothing but puppet for 2 demons when confronted she would be abomnation long before if not her plot armor.

Its not a recton since they have not changed any part of the lore. it was never explained what happen to the griffons so I always thought it was possible they would come back somehow. I mean, come on, its such an obvious tease to the players of Origins.
