1) Best Gameplay Squadmate (aka saving your a** half the time): Liara

2) Best Story Squadmate (aka most fun to bring along because of their conversations): Tali

For #1, I'm gonna pluck one out of left field: Kaidan in ME3.  Assault rifle for firepower, barrier for survivablity, reave for DR and biotic combos, overload for shield/barrier stripping and CC.  He basically works with whatever class you play, although I guess a lot of people don't have him in ME3.

For #2: Kasumi - love her sense of humor.

Eveyone but Garrus Miranda and Jacob. The three husketeers are  more useful to have around and have three times as much personality.

In terms of Gameplay, I guess I have to do it on average. Liara was easily the best for me in ME1, because once she had proper armor and her talents were spec'd up, she was a biotic juggernaut, however, Garrus was a good all-around character in ME1 too, having some light tech powers as well as the ability to use sniper and assault rifles, and then he became my solid right-hand-man in both ME2 and 3, so gameplay would be Garrus.

Story is a toss-up between Mordin and Javik. The bulk of Mordin's best is in ME2, but as a whole, his dialogue is the one that sticks with me above all others. Javik, however, does have some good lines that do make me genuinely feel for this character, but I guess the winner is Mordin for his ties to what i felt to be the best major arc in the series.

1. Kaidan. I missed him so much in ME2 and most of ME3. He was a beast.

2. Javik. He was awesome. Loved having him around.

Runner up:

1. Aria. Flare

2. Miranda & Garrus. Out of all the ME2 squadmates I enjoyed talking to her the most.  But Garrus was the most fun to bring on missions.

ME1:

Story: Wrex. Loved the cynicism and dry humor, especially his little elevator dialogues.

Gameplay: Liara. Biotics was pretty busted in ME1.

ME2:

Story: Mordin Solus. tremendous versatility in terms of being able to carry both funny and tragic moments. Easily the most fully realized character of the series.

Gameplay: Miranda Lawson: The combination of Warp and Overload was extremely useful with how shields and barriers worked in that game.

ME3:

Story: James Vega. He kinda wins by default; he's a good character, but he benefits from the relative paucity of truly compelling squadmates in ME3 IMO.

Gameplay: Probably Kaidan; I just found his power set to be very useful.

ME1: Liara / Wrex

Biotics are so strong in this game and Liara is the team's Adept, plus she comes with Overload as icing on the cake. Wrex is my favorite story squadmate because Wrex.

ME2: Garrus / Legion

Gameplay was a tough decision, but at the end of the day I take Gurrus with me the most. On Insanity, his passive's boost to power damage means out of the squadmates his is the the only Area Overload who can reliably strip full shields off an enemy; plus he can equip the Incisor for haxy awesomeness. And Legion is my robot buddy and the go to guy (think) if I need a sudo command executed.

ME3: Liara / Javik

Combos rip apart enemies and Liara can quickly set them up or set them off. Javik makes the Thessia mission a little more tolerable.

1. No one needs to save my Shepard. Her squadmates were just cannon fodder.

2. Javik when he becomes available, but for the entire trilogy probably Garrus.

All trilogy?

Liara.
-She can turn ME1 into a joke all by herself. (Biotics in general are ridiculously overpower in ME1 btw)
-She is the only one with Stasis in ME2, which is so horrendously broken it turns ME2 into a joke if used as a bonus power. I never use it because of that. (not even talking about the Scion-hahahaha-your-platform-isn't-there-anymore-thingy, but about the +a-few-hundred-percent-extra-damage-after-the-Stasis-wears-off). Instant singularity, making it better than Shepard's, by a lot. Singularity is the best power in the game, if we ignore buggy Stasis), only rivaled a little bit by Zaeed's grenade power.
-In ME3 she has a 2.something second cooldown singularity, and considering most enemies are unprotected even on insanity, this again turns the game into a joke.

If I have to pick a different one for ME2 because she's not a real squadmate, I'll go with Zaeed. His grenade power can stagger/panick in a wide range and his weapon damage is off the charts. (Only Thane does more weapon damage if you level up his bonus power, but only works against organics). Miranda's a good second because of her squad bonus damage.
