Garrus.

Garrus again.

I get that Liara's powers were overpowered a lot, but that was mitigated by the fact that Liara is... suicidal or something in my games. I tend to move around a lot, no matter what class I'm playing, and Liara seems to want to follow Shepard, which gets her immediately plastered by the enemy of the game. (Except in ME1, where fair's fair, Liara is actually capable of completely melting faces.) I think I spent more medigel on the Shadow Broker's ship than I spent the rest of the game during my insanity vanguard playthrough...

Garrus, in the meantime, does NOT foolishly follow Shepard and has an uncanny ability to get a headshot just as my carefully formulated plan of attack goes to hell. So he gets to come out a lot. And he and Tali are my favorites, since they have their unfair trilogy bonus.

Story: Liara / Tali / Liara

Gameplay: Liara / Zaeed / Javik - Javik's skills meshed so well with my Vanguard's and with a maxed out Flare it was insane. I pretty much used Javik and Liara on every mission in ME3 except where I had to use a different combination.

1) Best Gameplay squadmate - Liara. Her Biotics are always the strongest in gameplay.
2) Best Story squadmate - Javik. Just because he's a Prothean

Gameplay
- Miranda. Nothing comes close to how useful she is ME2.

Story:
- Only the two first games: Miranda
- Whole trilogy: Javik/Mordin

Best Squaddie ->Wrex hands down.  The best was running with Wrex in the Citadel dlc.  He just was a one krogan rolling ball of death.  What capped it off was having Wrex and Grunt in the Armax Arena.  I had to sprint to keep up with them in order to get a few kills.

Best Companion -> Garrus, being there through all three games.  Fits well if your Shep is Paragon or Renegade.

ME1 - Gameplay: Liara

         - Story: Garrus.

ME2 - Gameplay: Garrus/Zaeed.

           Story: Tali.

ME3 - Gameplay: Liara. Her biotics are very useful in combat, especially if paired with a sentinel or a vanguard.

        - Story: Javik. Javik was a no-brainer here.

Eh, I liked them all in their own way, even Jacob.

Gameplaywise I don't really care, I chose companions I see fitting the mission rather than for any particulary benefits they bring (although an Adept with Samara and Miranda is just a rolling ball of biotic goodness of hilarity).

Liara was just the bomb in combat, sure.  I deliberately used about every combination in all three games though, so I could play with them all.  I loved Tali's story.  Half to give a nod to Mordin, though.  He was always a favorite of mine, and was such a hero in ME3.

ME3:

Gameplay: Javik. He can use the Typhoon, and Lift Grenades are way too useful. Slam is underrated. It can trigger 2 biotic explosions at once. Same goes for 2 fire explosions, and 1 fire + 1 cryo explosion.

Story: Javik, hands down. Best voice acting and best comments.

The double explosions are just cool, they aren't that useful :P The first one usually kills the target.

Bring in Multiplayer characters as squadmates and we'll see just how feeble story mode squadmates are.

And they damage nearby targets. But yeah, Slam isn't actually that great.

ME1 1.Gameplay: Kaidan, he seems to make the most sense as a medic (high first aid skill). Also, his lift ability even if it's not upgraded much makes the final boss much easier.

2.Story: Wrex, genuine conflict with Shepard and multiple outcomes.

ME2 1.Gameplay: Miranda, her ability to take out both shields and barriers gives the player a great deal of freedom with the rest of the squad.

2.Story: Jack, genuine conflict with Shepard and believable character development.

ME3 1.Gameplay: Tali; the only time I repeatedly needed someone to "save Shepard's a**" was on Rannoch versus 3 Geth Primes, Tali's hacking is invaluable.

2.Story: Kaidan or Ashley, (again) genuine conflict with Shepard and multiple outcomes.

Overall(for me) 1.Gameplay: Kaidan

                          2.Story: Wrex

Gameplay: I always pick Garrus since he can handle almost every situation (shielded and/or armored enemies) plus I love his sense of humor and his loyalty.

Story: By far: Jack. I like the way Shepard tries to talk to her again and again and always gets rejected. In the end She opens up and I understood she's less a rebelious psychopath than a child and a wounded animal. I love her loyalty mission where she can choose the truth (Cerberus made her) or her own truth (Cerberus destroyed her) In ME3 her story fits perfectly well, she grew up and became this kind of mother-wolf and finally found a place in society and something worth fighting for. Genuinely, I was so proud of her when I met her in the academy I nearly cried.

For gameplay, being a vanguard, I like to always have a tech and in 1 Garrus also has decryption and first aid so he was always useful. But Tali could hack geth and that was needed a lot in 1 and 2. And Mordins incinerate is always useful but since Garrus is with you from the begining and useable in all 3 he wins for best squad mate. He's always there from start to end.

For story, I also find Garrus funny and again he's with you throughout all 3, but once I get my hands on Prothy the Prothean he's always right there with Garrus to entertain me. So story goes to Prothy.

Have to say it was in ME2; my Vanguard with Reave, Mordin, and Garrus took down anything and everything.

Story wise?  I loved all of them, but I dragged Garrus along a lot.
