I have to say, Tali and Legion provided much relief from the really annoying mechs that were everywhere in ME2. I liked to use their AI hacking to pit them against each other to see whose thrall would win. I barely had to fire my weapon in the heretic station, because the geth were too busy killing themselves with these two.

Squad Combos:
ME2: Garrus/Thane
ME3: Garrus/Javik *Overload and lift grenade was a good combo*
Romance: Garrus ----> He's a bit awkard in ME2 but he stepped it up a lot in ME3
Story line: I like a lot of the characters story lines, each are unique and deeply involved...I've only played ME2/ME3 so I have no say in ME1 sadly...but if I had to choose one scene I'd say the genophage cure scenes on Tuchanka. (Even though Romance scenes will always have a place in my heart)
***There are times when Garrus has a funny quip or two about certain situations.

My favorite is Grunt but the most useful was Garrus. If Legion would have had overload he would have moved ahead of Garrus. Kaiden was very useful in ME3 however he almost always dies on Virmire for me so he not very good if ya are dead.

I played an Infiltrator. Anyone with biotics was always saving my ass, since it's the only thing I as Shepard couldn't do.

But the key character in the entire series was Tali Zorah nar Rayya. Without her irrefutable evidence Shepard would have been forgotten, and the Reapers would have invaded through the Citadel, thus ending the story. In 50,000 years, someone would have found a dead Asari, preserved in a Prothean Stasis bubble on Therum. I'm not sure whether she would have decayed into a skeleton or would have been preserved, so I'm going to er on the side of preserved.
She would be found by squad of Pyjaks, Varren, and some other race. They would bring her back to life hoping she would have information on the Reapers.

Gameplay: Grunt/Garrus/Zaeed (non biotic Shepard). Samara (biotic Shepard)
In ME1, Tali hands down. She demolishes and disables everything, when Kaidan or Garrus can only do half of what she can. Liara is the runner up due to lolsingularity tornado.
When we got sacked by husks on the dead reaper, Grunt fortified and created a line to hold. Garrus held back and picked them off on the rear with his Incisor. Similarly, Garrus and Zaeed laid down some asswhoop on the geth on Haestrom, often keeping me from getting fried by pyro troopers. On the other hand, Samara's area Reave breaks down all types of defenses quite well and stuns would-be Shepard killers so I can Finish them off.
In ME3, Liara has the quickest cooldown, and can stop everything in its tracks outside of armour (James is the king).
Overall, ME2 gave me the hardest challenge, and Garrus' overload and Concussive shot is useful in almost every mission. Garrus gets this one.
In Story, Javik's quips are very informative and she new light but unfortunately he only gets one game. His presence would have owned in ME2. Garrus has hilariously derailing one liners all the time or gives insight into my favorite species of ME. "Scoped and dropped!!!" never gets old. I hope ME4 has squad comments on killing enemies or casting powers like ME2.

I probably posted in here before and said something completely different, but oh well:
ME1
Combat prowess: Liara
Story: Wrex.
ME2
Combat prowess: really depends on the class you're playing, but if we go for all Shepard's classes it's probably Zaeed. (Liara if you count her as a real squad member)
Story: Legion
ME3
Combat prowess: Liara
Story: Javik
Trilogy
Combat prowess: Liara
Story: Wrex

ME1:
Story: Ash/Kaidan. No wait... Tali, with her voice and her nervousness. I don't care that she's not much more than a encyclopedia quarianica. She's adorable. But I really do like talking with both the human squaddies throughout the game.
Combat: I find them interchangeable and get annoyed when they stand so that shep is directly between them and the target and they. just. keep. shooting. anyway. the. gorram. IDIOTS. *ahem* Wrex says funny things on missions though, so... Wrex.
ME2:
Story: Mordin. Have the best talks with Mordin and he has the best personal story/LM.
Combat: Anyone with overload. Okay, fine. Kasumi steals the show.
ME3:
Story: Javik.
Combat: Garrus with a Javelin is a thing of beauty. No combos necessary, no powers necessary, just simply, "scoped and dropped."
Overall:
Story: Damn. Now this is a tough choice. Can I pick Conrad? No? Crap. Okay... how about, whoever the LI is? I have to pick just one? Okay fine. Liara. There I said it. LotSB makes it happen. Garrus' goodbye scene, though... ![]()
Combat: Why bother. Combat in ME1 and ME2 sucks compared to ME3 as far as I'm concerned. ME2 has some really damn fun fights in it, don't get me wrong, but after playing ME3 and going back to play the previous two games, I just curse that I can't reach up, pull the bad guy over the waist-high obstacle and punch him to death. Also curse the running fatigue factor in ME2. Grrr. Curse you running fatigue factor. Leave now and never come back. Also curse the lack of fire explosions.
Uhh, my point is that combat -- for me -- is the most fun in ME3, so of course I'm not picking any of the ME1 or 2 squaddies here. Okay with that said: James. In my insanity run, he really was indispensable with his high fire-rate assault rifle and explosive incendiary ammo.
