Height has pretty much nothing to do with it, it was jarring at first, but i've managed to play dwarves and elves in DA. I play human because I want to experience different cultures as the outsider. You can't really do that if you belong to the culture.

It's not the height of playing dwarfs that bothers me but the stockiness of their frames.

And I don't have an issue romancing a dwarf - I don't find the look unattractive on others - I just couldn't be one.

I don't particularly like either dwarf or Qunari height for my character.  But it doesn't stop me playing them.

Though I didn't mind the female elves in DA:O and IIRC they're really not much higher than the male dwarves.

Height is really one of those things.  Everybody's the same height lying down. <3

As a fairly tall individual, I can't say I'm fond of playing the game's shortest race. I only played the dwarf origins once each for completion's sake. Dwarves are just so... compact and that's not visually appealing to me. Which. I'm not saying that people IRL who are short and/or thick can't be attractive (if anyone decides to attempt to make that parallel). It's just... not for me.

Also from a romance standpoint major height differences in couples really squick me out for some reason.

Lol i'd agree but by the looks of Iron Bull, he's taller than most dwarves even while lying down

I am 4'8 and get called "vertically challenged" on a regular basis at work.  :(  I mainly play as dwarven ladies in Dragon Age: Origins and World of Warcraft. I have two lady elves as well. I plan on creating a bunch of dwarven ladies in inquisition.

I'm 5 foot, my partner is 6'4 so I am use being the tiny one in a relationship.  I would love to play more often as a cute dwarf, but it isnt the height that puts me off, it is the run/movement animations, they make me sea sick. This happens in almost all games that allow for really short races.  So as much as I would love otherwise I usually stick to humans or elves who romance someone of similar height.

I hated playing a dwarf in DAO because cutscenes that showed her standing next to someone (like Alistair) invariably cut off the bottom half of her face.  Was really disconcerting.

I found it difficult to make a pretty dwarf lass and impossible to make a decent looking male (though my friend actually made her dwarf noble well, the best I've seen anyone make a male dwarf with the CC).  I ended up using Dagna's morph as a template and designing my own characters with it.

I also really couldn't get past the 'gorilla arms' thing till TMP7704 released his 'proportion fix' mod.  I have heard the Frostbite engine is notoriously hard to mod, so unsure if we will get anything similar, and it's made me reluctant to pre-order the game (though I have) because the previous games were rife with bugs and misplaced plot flags.

While I ended up enjoying the commoner story I really hated the dysfunction of the Noble's family (yes, even with an abusive alcoholic mother, I still felt the commoner was better off because Rica was an awesome big sister).  So I am not a big fan of "dwarven culture" in this game.  Don't really care for them in other fantasy games I've played (D&D, Pathfinder etc).

And Varric isn't a romance option and he would have been the ONLY reason I would have played one again.

I'll just stick with elves and humans I think.  Not a fan of the Qunari race or their culture either and the female Qunari in a video I saw was...ugh 'unfortunate looking' is about the kindest thing I can think of to describe her.

I generally prefer to have my partners around my height but I've gone out with women shorter and taller than me.  Not more than a head's size in difference though as I find anything more than that a bit jarring.

I don't like playing short characters and that's the main reason I don't play dwarves.

I really liked both dwarven origins in DAO and it was fine while the PC only dealt with other dwarves, but as soon as you left Orzammar and had every NPC and companion looking down at you, I was too annoyed with the height difference to continue playing.

It will be interesting to see if playing as a Qunari and towering over everyone else will bother me too. I plan to play as qunari at some point, just not for my first PC.

Interesting... but nope, height isn't a factor, really.

IRL I'm pretty tall, over 6', so I like that I have the option to be a giant (Qunari), even when I'm playing a female char.

I still think dwarves are the power-houses though. Pretty sure they'd be winning all the arm wrestles.

I don't like playing the short races much, but it doesn't have to do with height rather that usually they are the awkward ones. For example I'd prefer playing a short human to a tall dwarf. I don't like dwarves in DA universe. Their religion, their way of thinking, their muscular but compact look.

I've played dwarves and goblins in WoW and they are awesome. Gnomes on the other hand I don't like. Too tech savvy, not my cup of tea.

My favorite races to play and roleplay are corrupted humans. Undead, Chaos, Dark Side corrupted and the like. They tend to have a wider range of personalities and disturbed/manic is what I do best and enjoy the most. Since DA doesn't provide something like that I'll have to go with the next best thing which is plain old reliable human. I usually give them a scar or two in the character creator if I don't like the default.

Ehhhhhh 7ft of muscle vs 4feet and ten inches of muscle....Im gonna go with the Qunari being the power-houses

idk, Dwarves are freakishly stocky. If you compare the difficulty of the Carta assassin's vs the Qunari mooks, the dwarves had a lot more health/damage. Qunari are undoubtedly powerful, but they're also very lean, like athletes. Dwarves are hardy to an unnatural degree, like the stone they live in, and they look to have more in reserve if you check their build.

You may well be right, size is on the Qunari's side, I've just always thought of dwarves as very hardy and powerful creatures, I mean, they live among rocks, their hands and shoulders are massive. Qunari and the other surface races live among grass and trees, and appear a lot thinner.

Yeeeea i wouldnt call qunari "lean" plus that concept art is outdated. Also if the strongest creatures develop around rock, bats and mountain animals would be the strongest but we know that Elephants are, ironically they're raised "among grass and trees".

Think of it this way, the strongest dwarf physically could not match the strongest of qunari. Someone like the iron bull can easily out match someone who is nearly three feet shorter and at least 100-200lbs lighter.

You can make the argument they they may be more durable, but in terms of strength, i dont think so

Wasn't aware concepts got outdated... that's why they're concepts. Unless of course there is more recent art I am not privy too.

Anyway, my point with the rock bit was they dig it... like, cities out of it. That's a lot different to just sitting on it. But neither here nor there, really, as you say, Qunari do have the height advantage. Still, Iron Bull is a freak by Qunari standards, and we've never seen a "freakishly large" dwarf.

Concept art can be outdated. Case in point, elves.

I kinda hope they release a height chart or something for the player character models, just to put it into perspective.

I mean, if Dorian is the same height as every other human male in the game, which probably means around 6 feet or something...female Qunari is a gargantuan. Dude comes up to her shoulder. Which is pretty awesome actually.

Thats my point, physically a dwarf can only handle so much more muscle before their movement is completely impaired, qunari dont have that same hindrance so an abnormally large dwarf wouldnt be that much bigger while the average qunari alone is very large and clearly have a much wider range due to their structure.

In reality, tall individuals are naturally strong because they are naturally bigger, let alone a seven foot tall 280+lb individual. Take someone who is 4'10-5'5 and someone who is 6'7-7'2, give them the same amount of muscle mass in proportion to their bodys and the tall individual will be stronger every time.

But again when it comes to taking damage i think thats a different story

Good god, makes me wonder how tall the qunari males are in comparison

I'm a 5'8 woman and my height does effect my race preference. Simply because I find it awkward/strange to be playing a short character. However, I'll probably find it just as strange to playing an extremely tall qunari character. So I'll probably stick with elves/humans for my first few playthroughs, but I'll still definitely play dwarf and qunari inquisitors at some point. I'm not missing out on them!

Man, I loved that. The hardest I laughed at Dragon Age was when there was a dramatic reaction shot... Of Alistair's chin and the Warden's eyebrows and bangs.

*cough* That being said, with technology marching on and all that, I regret to say we'll probably see less comedy gold in that vein.
