Don't you think Salarian and Quarian Engineer should have their powers swapped?

I like the FQE a lot more now, thanks to Deerber. Once you know how to play her, she is pretty solid. That being said, I would really like to swap Sentry Turret. Overload or Sabotage would have been better for her. Flamer would take the cake, of course :P

Let's agree we can't make a case that Energy Drain is better than Cryo Blast. But as far as b00g13's "Not even close", actually, there is a case. As mentioned already, Energy Drain gives you a defensive buff by stealing shields. Not only from synthetics either. And it balances well with Incinerate too, because it allows to strip shields with ED and then melt armor with Incinerate. What ED gives you that the other SE and QFE powers don't have is crowd control with a large radius hitscan power. So it's not that cut and dried.

Thematically, she should have a hacked Geth Bomber (ABU?) that flies around and drops Arc Nades on the enemy position.

Nope. Still not close.

Yes, many people have thought this since release - and I agree completely.

Mordin was the Fire and Ice man in ME2 => Salarian Engineer should have had fire and ice.

Tali was the Energy Drain queen in ME2 => QFE should have had energy drain.

Anyway, as it stands the QFE is one of my favourite characters, and I vastly prefer sentry turret to decoy.

ED doesn't provide much CC, as it can hit a maximum of 2 enemies if I'm not wrong. Other than that, it's a case of ED being a strong defensive power and only a mediocre offensive one, while CB is a very strong offensive power. Defense can be achieved by right hand advantage and positioning, while there is no cap to offensive power. That's why most players around here prefer a help with offense than with defense. That, and dead enemies don't (usually) shoot.

I think the powers are far too different to state that one is better than the other, certainly not objectively.

Cryo blast is projectile, deals no damage, doesn't detonate, only primes on health, debuffs, generally better for offense.

Energy Drain is hitscan, deals damage, can detonate, primes on everything, restores shields, grants damage reduction, generally better for defense.

Apples and oranges.

No.

If you want to compare SE to SI and argue that SI is better, one can do something similar with QFE and HFI and argue that HFI is superior (sticky 'nades can prime and detonate). Just having one common power is not a good way to compare characters.

I wouldn't make that arguement. I said SE was redundant compared to SI because there really isnt any way to play him that you wouldnt be better off just putting the same weapon on an SI. HFI is no doubt better than QFE in pure DPS, but here are certain situations where this isnt relevant, such as facing a disparate mob of mooks with a high powered shotgun. HFI's cloak isnt relevant because everything gets 1 shotted anyway, and FQE's turret actually isnt entirely useless as it can provide some CC. She has slightly more shields too, and you can't run out of incinerates like you can with grenades. Small advantages but nonetheless worthwhile

Obviously, a specific situation, but I am struggling to think of one where SE would be superior to SI that is actually a frequent occurance

Thank you for articulating so clearly what I was trying to get near. I had gotten to wondering why so many people feel the SE is a good kit if only one of his three powers is decent.

Any Geth Platinum game.

Geth seem to fall hardest for the decoy too. Hunters will waste time on it, and Rocket Troopers will waste rockets on it.

The good thing about Energy Drain and Geth and other Mechanical enemies (Atlases, Turrets) is that it works even on Armor and Health. It means you can sustain your Shield restoring even after you have depleted the enemies' shields.

That's why SE gets a hard time against biological enemies, once shields/barriers are depleted ED doesn't work very well.

I'm glad they switched power sets. I vastly prefer having the CB-Incinerate combo at my disposal!

Besides, Energy Drain is a power only insecure and easily scared weaklings would desire. It is no coincidence that the Salarians developed this parasitic power.

But you could have, only in the Salarian Engineer character. :)

And yet, Energy Drain was a power used by Tali in both ME2 and 3. Do think she is an insecure and easily scared weakling?

And what about the biotic related power Reave? It is a power for Samara in ME2. Do you think she is a weakling as well?

I would have switched their power sets somewhat, but I don't know if Bioware though "oh, we will show that not all Salarians use Incinerate and Cryo Blast..." or if it was just "reasons."

If we are just changing some things, probably the QFE should have had Sabotage, even though that power is mediocre without Cloak.

I would have been more inclined to play the salarian engineer if he had cryo blast + incinerate.

But anyway I don't like energy drain much. Truth be told, whichever kit got dumped with energy drain I doubt I'd play often if at all - it's just a "meh" power, underwhelming offence and mediocre defence. QFE is fun because of fire+ice, I just feel bad that the SE got the short end of the stick with an uninspired power set.

Regarding sentry turret - I love r4 shock evo, kind of like a stun grenade - can prevent stomps, help res, help devices and easy to throw anywhere you like. I never particularly liked Decoy, with its casting range limitation and other annoyances.

But I can't argue with that - a QF Decoy would be... interesting... I imagine much dodging for the view. ^_^

Would have been interesting if they gave the QFE sabotage, energy drain and sentry turret - only problem being that energy drain and sabotage have too much overlap.

I think the Salarian Engineer could have been designed as this:

- Cryo Blast and Incinerate - The fire and ice combo similar to Mordin.

- Overload - Also effective against Synthetic enemies and has an upgrade that is similar to Neural Shock that makes the power effective against biologicals. (again, similar to Mordin)

- Low health and high shields - weak body, strong mind (and therefore technology).
