I was thinking of putting more Mass Effect characters in my list but this forum left me jaded towards everyone except Mordin. He's the only one that stands out to me anymore.

Mordin's definitely one of the very best characters from ME. I can't ever recall him receiving any hate from fans either.

Mordin was definitely one of the best characters in the series, but I'd give Javik the edge over him, largely due to the former's unnecessary VA change and railroading to being pro-genophage cure in ME3.

You're all going to think I am nuts and blah blah blah but my fav is Merrill from DA2. I just find something very endearing about her. There is just something about how wounded she is and how she feels like no one really understands her but she keeps going anyway. Hard to explain I suppose unless you've been there yourself.

You have the right to portray and defend your opinion, Whether it was popular or not. Every opinion deserves to be taken seriously no matter how unpopular it is. :)

There are three main objections to Mordin-

 

1) People who dislike that he was involved and invested in defending a genocide project.

2) People who dislike that he switched positions and opposed the genocide project he once supported.

3) People who dislike the change of voice actors.

 

1 and 2 are generally minor because Mordin's position(s) reflects nuance and doubt, along with guilt, such that it's understandable and even sympathetic even if you disagree with it. 3 is just plain minor, and most people think it was just a missed opportunity rather than a deal breaker.

As for favorite video game character...

 

It's hard to say. I've played so many games I've forgotten most of them, and different character types appealed to me at different points. Then there's the different roles characters can fill as well.

 

Overall, though, I think most of my favorites were characters who helped me develop as a person.

 

 

 

Emotionally, my favorite character (and a player character at that) was Magnus Gallant of the N64 game Ogre Battle 64.

 

Ogre Battle 64 was one of the first 'epic' fantasy games with a serious storyline that I was able to grasp: a story of a revolutionary war of independence of an oppressed lower class against an uncaring aristocracy that was under the thumb of a distant, ominous Holy Lodis Empire. It was one of my first big stories with moral ambiguity and intrigue, with good and bad apples on all sides, and it was one of the first that blended multiple plothreads into a flowing narrative that felt continuous rather than a series of unrelated arcs. There was a mundane class rebellion turned war for independence, there was the machinations of a distant power, a conspiracy that was resurrecting a fantastical apocalyptic power, and the return of once mythical gods and demons into the moral plain, and a tragic friendship arc with Prince Yumil...

 

...but most of all, it was the story of a young man who was unsure of himself and trying to figure out a direction for himself in life. Magnus was estranged from his father due to the Father accepting unwaranted blame for murder, struggling with a sense of impotence, and adrift in a world that wasn't what he thought it was or should be. He and his friend, Prince Yumil, were two people impotent in a world that was wrong, but unsure of what they could do to change it.

 

With some bare bones RPG mechanics, including dialogue choices and a few Big Decisions (though none worth mentioning on Bioware terms), it was my first real RPG experience of projection onto a largely pre-defined character. I was young, insecure, and uncertain, and so playing a person who started the same but gradually made progress and grew in strength and confidence by taking one small step at a time, even with setbacks, was amazing. I only managed to beat the game once, but doing so was an emotionally maturing experience of growth and perseverance.

 

 

 

Intellectually, though-

 

God and Lucifer from the Shin Megami Tensei series, specifically SMT: Nocturne. It's kind of sad that I would consider the 'demonic pokemon game' a major influence on my religious and philosophical development, but it was. SMT: N was a game that made me think about how I would want to make the world work if I had the choice- and whether it would be worth it. It also made me think of Law and Chaos in a new way.

 

SMT:N is a game set after the apocalypse. The world dies and gets turned into a donut around the light of creation (sorta- it's complicated), and the wasteland that remains becomes a battleground for demons and the handful of human survivors who struggle to determine the dominant philosophy that will dictate the very rules of nature and the reality that would be re-created once someone reached the light of creation. There was a philosophy of pure Might Makes Right (which ended up being championed by the angelic host- not nice angels), a philosophy which can be summed up as 'everyone is their own god, but separate' (and ideology of self-reliance and independence that none the less was always relying on the protagonist to get things done), a sort of spiritual communism of a world of Silence in which the universe would become a well-oiled and peaceful machine... or you could reject it all to rebirth the world of old, or toss it all away to become the Antichrist to destroy time and take the fight to YWHW.

 

Seriously, that last option isn't as bad as it sounds. Anyone who plays SMT knows that, in that franchise, god is a dick. A genocidal, frequently megalomaniacle, dick. He never appears in SMT:N, but his system of cyclic birth, destruction, and recreation of worlds is nasty business and it's no surprise that the Angelic Host is firmly behind the Might is Right philosophy. They've the strongest backer, and they want to make the laws... and, in the SMT universe, 'God' is the ultimate authority of law. Lucifer, rather than the source of all evil, is more like the ultimate rebel figure- prince of the damned because he'll support anyone who opposses the tyrant. He looks good by contrast, and because he's willing to help humans (albeit for his own end) while the forces of God are generally ambivalent at best and genocidal to apostates at worst.

 

SMT:N was a wakeup call to my... I guess I'd say 'unexamined' perspective on faith and ideology. The idea that angels and god might not be good but actively antagonistic was a shocker, and that angels would side with the same philosophy of a thug paradise was bizaar until I understood the appeal of autocratic absolutism in the name of 'good.' If you think you're good, and you think you're the strongest, a might makes right philosophy can seem entirely rational. Rational, but not appealing, and reading about the deconstructions of the ideologies so that I could see both their appeals and their weaknesses taught me to be more critical about, well, any system of thought.

 

It was a fun enough game (thanks to a guide book), and eventually I was able to understand the distinction between the fiction and the faith I practiced at the time, but it was definitely a game that made me think.

 

 

 

Video-game wise, I think those were some of the ones that had the most impact on me. I've had some awesome RPG experiences with RP character development arcs, but that's something else. There have been plenty of games in which the supporting cast made it enjoyable, but that's something else as well. And most of the character development arcs I enjoyed the most were from anime.

 

 

If there was a game which I felt had the most awesome characters, though, it would definitely be Persona 4. An amazing great cast all around, both flawed and redeemed with great character development arcs and strong themes of maturity and maturation. A neglectful dad, a lonely girl, a boy who was adopted and feels unwanted, two girls who are simultaneously best friends and emotionally dependent and jealous of eachother, a young man questioning his sexuality (and a young woman rejecting hers), a friendless boy who thinks his value comes from test scores, a surviving brother struggling to grieve...

 

So many great characters in one of my favorite games of all time.

FINALLY someone else who likes SMT III! I wouldn't call it demonic Pokémon though, since it came first. Pokémon is the angelic Shin Megami Tensei. Appropriate to compare to the more popular franchise though, of course.
