If the elves were smart they would go for a vassal state. Offer their peerless archers in exhange for a small self-governing realm within the empire.
Such could have been said about the krogan or quarians as well, but look what heights they may rise to again.
Or they can be cast back into the dust of history just easily.

It's entirely possible that Orlais will be in no shape to oppose them, and that assumes that the Dales will even be the place they retake. In any case, the elves owe humanity nothing.
And how are the elves going to be in a possession to oppose orlais? or ferelden? or Antiva? or Nevarra? if the elves were to take the Dales, and then try to take lands from humans, another exalted march would be called immediately.
And this is assuming they don't call a march immediately once they all arrive in the land. If they take it with violence no human nation will ever let them keep it.
Especially if they lose workers to the Dales, the peasants would hate every elf since its their fault the economy was damaged.
And this is all assuming the Dalish were able to come from every corner of thedas in a timely manner, cross through orlais, and then somehow establish places for the elves already living there, and for them to live. And thats not talking about the hate which would spawn between the Elves from the Dales and the Dalish.
Also the dalish barely have a population anymore. you even hear that they wouldn't accept elves from the city but their numbers are so low they have to.
Society changes, we know some humans in the cities want lives for the elves to get better. so right there we see a abolitionist movement.

I'm not trying to Godwin precisely, just wondering what made Z suddenly go berserk.
Celene burnt down the alienage because 1) her supposed liberalism is really all about herself and how she wants think of herself [and keeping her sex-toy happy], the moment it becomes tenuous she makes a face heel turn, 2) she's lacking in conviction, honor, or really any sense of back bone, and 3) despite her reputation she's just a fairly bad politician. That her throne was threatened by what amounts to rioting elves burning down their own shitty property, whom nobody really cares about, speaks volumes. There were other ways to diffuse the situation had she had the conviction to try them.
The elves rebelled against the throne. They might have had good reason to but there was really no other outcome they had any right to realistically expect. And no other ruler would have hesitated to crush them with at least as much force as Celene did, least of all Gaspard.
They weren't really rebelling, not in a practical sense any ways, they had no army, no real organisation, they were rioting. And no where did I insinuate they were noble, in fact if anything I insinuated they were idiots for basically destroying their own property. If Celene wanted to put it down there were still ways of doing it with out indiscriminately burning down the place.
Of course they were. They were robbing and murdering the humans they could. The fact that they couldn't seriously challenge Orlais is beside the point.

Point being, anything could happen, especially when magic might lead to a great deal more than anything in our own world's medieval history. And I have high hopes for the future of the Dalish; we cannot, after all, simply stay locked in the status quo forever--that'd make for a terribly dull story arc, and Bioware's better than that.
To be fair, Xil, Nazi Germany lost WWII due to being outnumbered and Hitler believing that he knew best, which obviously wasn't the case. Even the most advanced military can be overwhelmed by sheer numbers.

Do you remember any of that and more? You cite the fall of the Reich as some triumph of civilization when all it did was herald another dark age, another period of strife and chaos.

Orlais and the Dales's own struggle doesn't even come close to comparing, the only thing notable about it was that one party was elven.
