Oh that must of made it extra embarrassing when the humans CRUSHED them.

It's perfectly neutral. To the ancient elves, the humans would all die before reaching the elven equivalent of cultural adulthood.
Today is what matters, not the opinions of elves who died thousands of years ago. Today the word serves no purpose other than to remind the elves of their supposed immortality even though living apart from humans hasn't brought it back. It's purposefully offensive, and "shem" is simply an even worse version. Both are unnecessary vestiges of a dead culture, the details of which have fallen to myth and legend. The elves don't have longer lifespans anymore, if they every actually did, so the word is inaccurate at best. There is nothing neutral about intentionally calling adults children.
Assuming you buy into the theory of immortality.
Which...most people here i'd assume don't.
Let's be fair, a vanishingly small number of their highest ranking nobles just might have been able to live "Forever" as coma fade walkers. Didn't help them much when it mattered though.
i believe it to a extent but not the dalish versionAssuming you buy into the theory of immortality.

This seems uncomfortably close to a desire to just have the elves stop using their own language and adopt the human one in full... and honestly, I have to ask why that would ever be a good thing. The whole point of the Dalish is to recover as much of their lost history as possible; I'm sure that it can evolve as a living culture in time, but more important than that is ensuring that it doesn't die out completely.

Not really, its like a ambiguous plot. Up to this point its utterly impossible to say if they were or weren't.

Seems strange the only term they want to preserve seems to be the derogitory term for humans. Figured they'd have the name of their old gods as a higher priority, but I guess praying to a creator takes less presedence then flipping the bird to a passing human.

Out of everyone posting at the moment, i'd say only two buy into compared to five i know don't.
So i wasn't inaccurate with what i said.
So yes really.

Er, they've got the names of their gods intact too, even the Forgotten Ones. I'm not sure where you're going with this. Also, "shemlen" is the only elvish term for humans.

Ghina: "I cannot believe i just did that!"
Me: ROTFL
To be honest, I wouldn't want the word removed either. But I would like the option to use or not use it. Same as if I play a non-elf, I want to have the ability to call an elf a "knife-ear", even If I may almost never use it.
Being able to play as both a jerk or a saint is vitol for roleplaying, espeically when it comes to character building.

Hunter: Keeper I've found this book of elven lore!
Keeper: Hmm we must study this! *10 years later*
Keeper: Hmm this has an INCREDIBLE number of insults for the shemlen.
Hunter: Best find ever.

The more we learn about the dalish, the more I'm beginning to suspect that's not actually the case.

Given that the Dalish PC in DAO was never forced to use it, I find it incredibly unlikely that the Dalish DAI PC will be.

CheesecakeWarden: Hey Cammen...
Cammen: Yes?
CW: You know that girl you're pinning over?
Cammen: Yes?
CW: Giggity...
Cammen: NOOOOO YOU MONSTER!!! *Runs off*
CW: Today was a good day.
The more we learn about the dalish, the more I'm beginning to suspect that's not actually the case.
Which?
And either way, if true, then all we need to do is kick the Dalish mission into higher gear and learn even more about what's been forgotten.

Do we really care what BSNers think? People used to call the idea that mages went into fade and corrupted the black city bogus but it appears they indeed went there, revealed in Legacy DLC, before that it was impossible to tell. Even after the reveal there are many things who are still unknown or ambiguous. So for now we cannot claim anything regarding Elves' immortality.
Given that the Dalish PC in DAO was never forced to use it, I find it incredibly unlikely that the Dalish DAI PC will be.
Well we also had the option to not play a dalish in DAO, so there. Streamlining might end up getting a bit in the way.

Er, I'm fairly sure you're not forced to play as an elf in this game either...

Both.

City elf for life.
City elf for life.
Well, we also couldn't play as a dwarf noble in this game, or a human barbarian ever, or an actual Tal-Vashoth ever; I don't see the lack of city elves as standing out much.
