I usually don't bother with races other than human - I just don't find fantastic species all that interesting to play. Probably because I'm not really big into fantasy - I like Dragon Age despite (rather than because of) the fantasy setting - though I have come to appreciate the lore quite a lot. That said, I do tend to self-insert at least my general world view and real-life values, even if the personality type of the characters I play changes.
So, even when playing a human I'll play characters who are anti-establishment (read: anti-Chantry), pro-freedom for all (pro-mage), and accepting toward other cultures (as in elves, dwarves, even Qunari even if I don't agree with the Qun philosophy).
Also, I find humans more of a blank slate, so to speak, so it's easier to create different personality types for them. I find it funny when people accuse human-players of being 'boring' but then they go on to describe the cliche shem-hating elf with trust issues they're going to play. Not that there's anything wrong with finding that fun, mind you, but i wouldn't call ir particularly imaginative. Though I have to admit I find all the pro-human, to-hell-with-elves posts in this thread a bit creepy. I realize some of it's tongue-in-cheek or just people in role-play mode (or at least I hope so), but still... Fantastic races or no, that sort of gleeful bigotry rubs me the wrong way.
But anyway, DA Inquisition might actually be the first game where I'll play an elf first, and it's purely because Solas seems like such a fascinating character so far that I want to see his romance arc first. After that though, I plan to go human mage then human rogue, both also female, and then... Either a male human non-mage or a qunari female mage. Depends on what I enjoy more combat-wise and whose romance I want to see next.
