Based on her relationships with both Hawkes and all the NPCS, I think the difference is that she primarily associates men (in general) with wanting causal sex and with women (in general) she's much more at ease forming an emotional bond as well because she doesn't always associate them primarily with hookups. In a sense the fact that she seems to more naturally form platonic relationships with women carries over into her sexual relationships with them.
I got this sense as well. It's one of the reasons I like her with a male Hawke cos I wanted her to be with a guy who doesn't just want casual sex and who she can eventually open up to and care for. I know male Hawke/Isa is a rarity, at least in the online fandom especially when played by a woman player such as myself. But I like it.
Why does it seem strange to please as many people as possible? It's called good business sense.
It isn't strange, but the characters themselves come first
I don't understand how Isabela going for Fenris if unromanced shows any kind of preference. She just goes for him, it doesn't mean she goes for him because he's a man. Her only female option would be Merrill, whom she clearly sees as a little sister.
Actually there seems to be some interest in Bethany from her too but someone Bethany ends up flirting with Sebastian, which is kinda strange since Bethany seems to get a letter about a close friend. Some girl named Tamra. I pretty must at one time shiped Bethany with Isabela because it seems kinda going that way.
I think the problem is that we really do not know what Isabela prefers, maybe emotionally she prefers women and it ends in a more serious and sexual relationship, and with someone like Fenris, she begin with a more sexual thing and the ends up with a more emotional one too.

I agree the characters come first, but I don't see how characters not going into their sex life with you, other than any attraction they may or may not have for your race/gender, are harming their character.

It doesn't harm them
It depends on the character really, some do and some don't

Overall they are not harm, it is only when certain experiences are not represented and you end up having a kinda of heteronormative game despite all characters preferring all genders. It happened with DA 2, unfortunately.

Yep Fenris and Merrill being rather tight lipped about their lovers/preferences? Perfect sense.
Anders...not so much. Even with Justice.

In those cases, they can do it. For example I wouldn't expect Zevran to not bring up his past escapades, like his first mission for the Crows with the one Circle mage, since it is part of his character.
But in most cases, there is no need to.

How was DA2 heteronormative? The only time I can think of that is close is Anders not bringing up Karl being a past lover to female Hawke.

All the more blunt flirts and romances with npcs and companions are from different genders. If you can tell me at least two example of a non-hetero relationship, without touching Hawke I will change my opinion.

For example, there are no f/f relationships in game, at all. Bethany connects better with women as well (Leliana, her Lothering friend, the girl in the Circle, Isabela), yet she still flirts with Sebastian. While in DAO such relationships were mentioned.

I don't care about good business sense. I prefer the writer to decide how they want to write their characters.

That works well for a novel, but when it comes to an RPG I think the line can be blurred a bit.

Anders and Karl
Ashaad and Saemus

I'll grant you that there are no lesbian couples.

So then tell me how not exploring the character's past sex life, unless it is a big part of the character, damages anything about the character?
Ashaad and Saemus
Is this confirmed? I know that it was confirmed by a dev that Saemus was gay/bi, but was it ever confirmed that he was in a relationship with Ashaad? I don't remember Ashaad being mentioned by the dev. It's not far-fetched, but I didn't think it was confirmed. In fact, has there ever been a confirmed relationship between a qunari and any other race?

Anders and Karl are connect to your Hawke that was my point, if you choose a female Hawke you do not even know.
Ashaad and Saemus was a off screen thing that we do not know the full extent of it, for what I gather the Qunari are not even premeditated to have relationships. Like I say it was not blunt thing and it was subtext, that ends up with both of them dead.
In DA:O you have actually more than DA 2, Hespia and Branka which is other bad example but still it is there. The Blacksmith and the other guy from DA:A, this two are subtext too.

Those two were confirmed by David. Sorry I don't have the quote handy though.

I don't remember any confirmation, but a relationship that needs confirmation is pretty much non-existent. If you really want to show something, show it in the game. DA 2 was very convenient for people wanting to turn "the gay switch" off.

Believe me. I agree with you on this. I'm not really convinced that Ashaad and Seamus count as gay couple representation. I try to find gay couples in media and it wasn't until Gaider said that Seamus was gay that I even thought anything at all about the two of them in that way.

Yes, I only know because David Gaider confirmed, that is why it is subtext in game and not text. Branka and Hespia it is on text and doesn't need confirmation.

I never said exploring character's past sex life is mandatory for good characterization. But it shouldn't be adapted to fit every player's whim.

I suspected a bit with teh whole "wager you'd gone further than that" but it was a bit too subtle.
I've only noticed Seamus and Ashaad because I knew by the time that if some people are trying to protect someone or helping someone - it means they're personally ivolved (I mean mages and their families and such in DA, especially in DA2). No miracles here, no one will be so protective or persistent otherwise.
But eh, there's lots of folks who only will see what their eyes want to see, so it doesn't matter if it was subtle or not so much.
I think Isabella is a interesting LI and I like both options and I agree she does seem more comfortable with Fem Hawke but I like her with Male Hawke more she views all men the same way as distractions that only want sex a outlook from her past and her marriage. But Male Hawke can prove he doesnt just want sex he can prove her truely loves her its pretty great in my opinion.
And on the topic of preferences for the Iron Bull it could be handled like Zevran was he would romance both sexs but he openly admits to prefers women over men in dialogs in DAO maybe they will do something similiar for Iron Bull.

I agree she is my favourite LI in DA 2
There was a lot of character development and opening up with her
