Exactly haha. I mean I pressed all the hearts because I wanted to romance the character... but I didn't really want to call them sexy right after meeting them, ya know? xD Sometimes it's nice to take baby steps so I don't feel like a creep.

I know! I mean, Fenris just talked about his lyrium markings being ripped off of him or something and Hawke's like "what a waste of a perfectly handsome elf" or something and I was like "awkward" or something.

It's a little more than a line or two. Children don't come up when you romance Merrill or Anders with a same-sex PC for instance... lol

What exactly did you want from them? How different should a person act around a boyfriend versus a girlfriend? I'm really curious. Personally, I don't see what the huge difference would be.

Yes, yes I want exactly this. I want them to behave differently around my Hawke depending on the gender. Otherwise, the gender is a purely cosmetical choice. As for how - well, I won't share my thoughts on that because I'm afraid I'm going to offend somebody. I'm a straight female, but I knew a couple of bisexuals in my life and what I saw was that they did behave differently around people of different gender. I don't know why, I'm just saying what I saw.

As for the lines - how much is "a little more"? Because Anders has only one line - at the very end, and only in mage ending. Merrill, I think, had a couple. I think I'm wrong in saying this about all companions, however. I'm pretty sure Isabela had more gender-specific lines.

So, yes, I just want my choice of gender to have more impact. I like roleplaying a woman. I like when the game world is acknowledging the fact that my character is a woman. With DAII I felt like it didn't matter until Anders spurted out this line about children at the very end and I was all like "WOW! You have finally noticed!!!"

And I think we are going off-topic. And straight into one of these romance threads.  :P

Actually, Anders' romance scenes were quite different with a male and a female Hawke. So much so that when he tells male Hawke that he had warned him about the romance, it was a 'what moment' because he only does the warning, repeatedly, to a lady Hawke.

Oh well, I guess I'm less informed than I remembered. There was another thing different in his romance, which is... Karl. I finished the game with lady Hawke and only then did I learnt that the two were lovers and I felt a bit... offended that Anders hadn't mentioned this. You know, as if he were ashamed of telling Hawke or thought that she wasn't dear enough for him to even mention this...

OO! I'm going off-topic again. So, my thought is "sameness is not cool".

Fenris flirt lines in particular was very awkward for me too. I mean I can get behind the idea of telling someone you're attracted to them right off the bat, but the way it was said to Fenris kind of reduced him to a thing which was really uncomfortable. But yeah I didn't want to miss the boat on romancing him so I clicked away, but wish they would at least give more than one flirt options in a single dialogue if one of them is going to be this awkward.

You only have to hit the flirt options in the whole "more than you usually give me I suspect?" conversation and I believe you follow it up in the conversation following that. Basically if he's drunk hit on him.

I usually pick the snarky options instead of that first flirt. It doesn't bother me but it's perfectly skippable.

(Plus Fenris probably likes the whole hey sexy elf thing given he goes for Izzy who's...worse with that with the whole did you glisten for him remarks that actually makes me wince).

True but on my playthrough I didn't yet know that there won't be future opportunities. The approval indications (interested, adore, love etc) were also missing in DA2, so I just tried to play it safe cos I didn't want to replay stuff in case I didn't activate it.

As for Fenris liking that kind of teasing, that's possible and I also got the impression that he did like it. It was just that he was an ex-slave from a place that often enslaved elves in particular on top of abusing them. It just didn't feel in character for my Hawke to say that line, as that Hawke didn't have a humorous/sarcastic personality, so it would have just sounded creepy.

Oh yeah I don't blame you. And then we got weird stuff labeled as flirts that really shouldn't have been (teaching Fenris to read as one). So it was all over the place.

Though yeah I agree.  I usually saved most of Fenris romance triggering conversation for after he hit the halfway point in rivalry. Which usually by act 1 cause I love trolling him.

That line is very awkward for some Hawkes. I had to blink twice with my aggressive friendship mancing Hawke saying that. Then I just played it off as him being a crass jerkwad ala usual. I actually really liked the sheer bluntness of a lot of Fenris' flirts. It was refreshing. That one is just a bit awkward cause god Hawke moving fast much? (still not as bad as Anders though. Hawke? I don't think Karl's corpse is cold yet...come on any harder will you?)

(Still wishing for the full line to show up if you hover over it. That's so helpful for really weird/jarring dialogue that the silly paraphrasing gives us).

Completely agreed. I think part of the issue is the flirts with Anders and Fenris in particular clashed with their broody serious characters. In that, when we first meet them, they've just come out of tough times (Anders loses his lover, Fenris just escaped his slaver and is being hunted) and some of the light hearted flirts sometimes make it seem like Hawke just has a knack for bad timing especially with certain personalities. There's a reason Hawke has a reputation among some for being an awkward flirt, it's not always what he/she says but when it is said as well.

Hey unlike Corso, Fenris can handle his booze without turning into a sloppy mess.

But Hawke be waiting for that opportune moment to compliment dat ass ;)

Though it makes me wonder if Fenris gave himself some liquid courage before barging into Hawke's door (especially if you turn him down the first time and he just comes in with that smoldering look in his eyes with the whole "Command me to go and I shall." *swoons*)

Yep. Isabela's and Merrill's at least aren't at completely wtf moments. Izzy hits on you first so it's more of a fun back and forth and Merrill for the most part is either distracted (if rival) or flattered (if friend).

I just kind of made the awkward timing part of my Hawke's insane personality. Makes the game more bearable if I picture him as the sad troll not taking anything too seriously because he's somewhat snapped.

I did think it was unfair.

If I played as a straight male, I get armor clad Cass, stay at base Josie and.... ?

I play gay and I only get Bull of Muscles and fancy tash Dorian.

So it's just 4..

While ladies get a huge range, which in a weird way I feel like its okay and realistic that in a situation like this there would be less options for a male cause you're in a base filled with mostly male warriors & not all of them think the Inquisitor is worth it. The choices though for men are good, but lacking alittle in variety for me, which is why I won't bother playing as a dude. Cause if I were playing as a guy, none of the above characters are my type, even though they are attractive.

The worst for me, flirt options said, was Sebastian. I was totally going to romance him, due to the first chaste romance and it was...horrible. I have no idea why Sebastians flirts are so atrocious.

Yeah that was super uncomfortable and cringe worthy >_< also every flirt with Sebastian made Hawke feel like a rapist because most of them were pretty crude and none were reciprocated until the very end.

As a straight white male (yes, the whole triumvirate of evil) this doesn't bother me in the slightest. Yes it would be nice for everybody to get an equal amount, but these are videogame romances, not basic human rights. Two things that I fear too many on these boards confuse for one another.

I always considered the romance options in BW games to be a fun little diversion, but nothing much more than that.

Oh what were the lines? I'm curious. I romanced both of them with a same sex Hawke so I didn't even know this existed. I actually did watch fem Hawke/Anders on youtube, but never remember seeing this.

I have appreciated that there has been a distinct lack of representing all straight white men as the "whole triumvirate of evil" in this thread up until this point.

Ugh, there is nothing romantic or cute about suggesting to a man with vows that he could perform ahem "services". The man had to go and pray a lot for Maker's sake.

Fenris hits on Hawke? I certainly didn't feel that.

As for Anders, he only does that if you choose a diplo choice. My Hawke was a sarcastic ass in the most awkward of times, so I never got that for the romance run either. He did hit on my other Hawkes that were diplomatic though.

I'm not saying it was not awkward, but there's a difference when the brooder does the flirting and when someone else does that to someone who is going through some tough internal struggle (losing lover, running from slaver, whatever). Just my opinion.

Hmm my Hawke that romanced him was a mage, although I don't remember his flirting with any of my non-mage characters (female or male). Maybe I didn't see it as a flirt, it's not the first time that would be the case.

It could have been a certain dialogue choice that made it different. I usually don't romance Fenris, the last time I tried it didn't register and I had gotten through over half the game thinking he was my LI, but he wasn't. He had gotten with Isabela instead.
