I'd have to agree with several posts above.  Since the beta was launched they have stated they were very carefully adding people in waves based on specific criteria of player traits.  They have not only added experienced Dragon Age players, but also people who were new or unfamiliar with the series.

It was disheartening for many longer term Dragon Age, and Bioware, fans such most people on these forums and myself, but they had a good reason for being selective in whom they chose as it would help make the Keep an overall better experience.  Those of us who were not selected kept hoping that we would happen to fall into that criteria one day and be chosen.  Then they started giving away codes.

At first I was, as I'm sure many here were, like a child being offered candy.  I jumped at every opportunity I saw to grab a code, but then I realized I truly did feel like a child hoping for a handout.  There in lies the problem.  They went from being very selective in whom they let in, then started giving access to random individuals, many who may not have even applied for the beta.  This leaves a very sour taste in the mouths of many who have signed up since day one to participate that still don't have access, and in my opinion a poor way to roll out such an expansion of the beta players.  If they had say given access to all of the early applicants in addition to giving out these codes for example, I feel it would have been better received.

I know the Keep launches sometime next month, so it's not a long time to wait, however this is a precedent I do not wish to see repeated in the future with other such initiatives.  I feel it's important to address these concerns as they occur rather then ignore them while they continue to grow until things explode with pent up frustrations.  This is why I wanted to offer my 2 cents.

I'd toast to that friend. BioWare really dropped the ball on this one. I don't know what compelled them to go from having an application process a year in advance to essentially just giving out codes all over the social media to anyone lucky enough to pick one up. Especially with the nature of Dragon Age Keep, it wouldn't make sense necessarily for a newcomer to Dragon Age to tinker with it. To a lesser extent, BioWare needs to make sure it's user-friendly. However, they also need to make sure they adequately provide enough choices and decisions where we feel our personal world states are intact.

Without the benefit of importing our saves from DAO and DA2, we have to rely on whatever the Keep provides to continue the legacy of our Warden Commanders and our Hawkes. That alone should make it a priority on BioWare's end to get as many DA vets into the mix as possible, just so they make sure the keep is as sufficient as it possibly can be. Hopefully with the next Mass Effect, BioWare will have a better planned approach towards testing these systems by putting them in the hands of those who thoroughly understand the Mass Effect universe.

if anyone has an extra code, I'd love to give one to my wife who is in the hospital right now since she is the biggest dragon age fan ever. She had to be admitted yesterday on our anniversary, and this type of thing would pick her right up! If no one has one, enjoy your keep beta experience. :)

I think this is a very sensible post by @Donser and one I've started seeing popping up on the 'apply within' thread.

Having been on a few beta's in my time I thought I'd make a few suggestions about why I think it has happened this way and no I have no insider knowledge of the beta selection process.

The Keep is a new way to track save states as has been shown in the Keep reveal the recent Twitch discussion, and the many many pages of the Keep thread. As has been shared already, beta testing allows suggestions to be made and bugs to be spotted.

Early testing probably only needs dozens of testers, not hundreds or thousands (from the 120,000 applied).

That also means that there will be people with the perfect credentials for testing not picked simply due to the numbers.

What would you do with a list of tens of thousands? Review everyone and assess their fitness fairly? Or go through the list choosing people who fit your criteria and then stop when you had enough? I'd do the latter. Is that fair? This is not as has been stated a candy shop handout - fairness is not the purpose of the exercise, it's not a line for a popular movie, it is to release great software and I'd rather the devs focused on the site than building some complex applicant sifting process. (and I could quite understand that the number of beta applicants will have exceeded expectation)

We know that weekly picks from the beta applicants list have continued, but you could have applied on day one and never be picked, simply because of the huge number of applicants.

To address the 'unfairness' of the random codes and the 'friends codes' being handed out to current beta testers, I think it is genius for three reasons:

  • First it ensures a random element and introduces into your test some people who may not use the site as you expect, exposing undisclosed bugs.
  • Second, it actually increases the chances of people who are deeply invested into DAI, such as the people on this thread to be picked, as many have.
  • Third, the devs can spend more time in 'crunch' focusing on the Keep as it approaches completion, leaving the picking to others to do.

Right now the Keep is the next focus for DAI enthusiasts, we've done several of: replayed DAO and DA2, read the books, watched the trailers & demos many times, have argued about love interests on BSN. I think we should suspend judgement on how we feel about the 'equity' of the beta access rollout because I don't think that debate is helping and I would prefer the Keep team focuses on the Keep itself in the c.4 weeks remaining. Sure there can always be hindsight lessens next time.

And I understand the frustration that @Donser lucidly expresses. If I come across any codes, I'll be passing the second one straight to @Donser.

I honestly don't care at this point, hopefully it'll be open to all come next month or start of November

Still kinda wish it was just a downloadable app rather than webpage but hopefully it can be accessed on Internet Explorer for XB1

I've tested it on IE on XB1 and it works fine.

Hey guys, wouldn't mind a beta key since it's the gift that keeps on giving (pun intended). As soon as I get my share of keys, I will look back in the thread and gift them to the people that have been waiting the longest. Let's help each other so that everyone gets in!

Hate to burst your bubble, but only people before the F&F codes were announced got codes (with some exceptions).

I wish I could share some more codes, but alas I gave mine all to people on here already.

Thanks for pointing that out, Kantr. It's a shame this is the case, but I guess myself and all the others will have to wait for the final release of the Keep then. I'm happy I at least got a good look at it in a recent video and it looked exactly like I envisioned it, so no hard feelings. November can't come soon enough!

I got a code from someone on a reddit request thread but I'm just wondering, does that mean I get 5 codes to give out myself or is that just F&F people?

I dont think so. U probably got a f&f code yourself. It was only the testers who got in before that got the codes to give out I think. Looking at it from a logical view if everyone who gets In got the 5 codes then it would essentially be never ending :)

Is going on to Twitter/Tumblr the only way to get codes?  I am horrible at following Twitter.  I did post on the #MakeMeaKeeper but it seems like, unless you can follow it all day, you're kind of SOL.

Yup i have work and family so no way can i get a code this way.Hate how the codes have been given away. Many applied months to a year ago for beta..grrrrrr

Thanks for explaining :) I wasn't sure if it was just F&F because there's still so many people getting keys also there must be many who don't bother to hand theirs out or they didn't use theirs from lack of interest (madness!) etc...

There's also a lot of lurkers giving them out on the dragon age reddit, this is how I got mine... just by asking. (Didn't think i'd get that lucky). And there's the gaming board on 4chan if you're brave. ;)

It does seem unfair but it's only a few weeks until they open it up. You just need to ask in as many places as possible. I posted here and a few other places before I got mine.
