I usually don't enjoy going off the beaten path more than a few times in a game.  Not really a completionist.

But from what I've seen of this game, oh man, I'm planning to do as much as I can.  I never want it to end.

Look forward to it! I'm the same as you, super massive completionist to the very end. And it gets worse... I'm good with numbers (memorizing them). And since I've played the game so many times, I know exactly where everything is :( I can do a complete run through of DA:O in about... 20 hours, give or take. Doing everything. My husband thinks I'm crazy, but I've actually just memorized and organized it accordingly :P

For once, I'm looking forward to not knowing where something is. But if I see something, I'll definitely be picking it up. Shinies=gold=profit=armor! RPG 101.

Have you actually got OCD or are you just making light of a disorder which seriously negatively affects people who really have it?

OCD isn't as much a disorder as it's simply a more severe manifestation of the same mannerisms every psyche developes.

Going through all areas, looking into every crate, looting every pocket and backtracking every passage to find hidden areas is such a mannerism and the only criteria that differiates this from what is clinically referred to as OCD is whether it impairs social functions of the person in question.

I feel your pain.

"excuse me, you missed that blood lotus... HEY.... YOU MISSED THAT BLOOD LOTUS"

There was one demo with loot someone just left there and my eye wouldn't stop twitching.

I was having the exact same reactions during that demo.

"You missed the loot! Go back and get it! No, not the lever, forget the lever, get the loot! That's it, go bac-wha? YOU WALKED RIGHT BY IT AGAIN!"

I am so glad I'm not the only one that does that.

The question now would be:

Is that normal RPG player instincts and they simply didn't loot everything in the demo because time schedule, etc., or do we really have OCD?

I know that I always stop to pick up dropped coins when I'm walking around somewhere and I always wonder why no one else does it. It's free money damnit!

What social life?!

I threw that away the moment I saw this dude kill other dudes with paper.

I'm starting grad school early next year and will most likely still be playing.

I know what to blame if things go south (besides myself :P).

It may just be instincts, like an extended Tetris effect. I have never done the coin thing though, but I admit to scoping out good vantage points ever since I started playing Assassin's Creed.

Then again, I am the type of person who spends an hour tidying their house in Skyrim because one carrot was out of place. I just started stuffing them into drawers, kinda felt sorry for Farkas as I imagined him going around the house and finding stuff like carrots in one drawer, a witch's head in the other.

it may be a little of both. OCD  type mannerisms such a picking up everything are generally a good thing to have when playing an rpg... even if it means alot of vendor runs. so if you aren't you get trained to act like it anyway.

I do that too...

Really looking forward to it. Striving for completion will be much more challenging than silly stuff like high difficulty gameplay. :P Can't wait!

Exactly.

It's perfectly normal to want those things, and not a symptom of OCD. Referring to one's small issues with things like that is rather self-absorbed when people actually suffer from it.

Like saying 'I felt so stiff I felt like I had Multiple Sclerosis' just...no.

Picking up money off the ground is really not what OCD is.

And no, I seriously doubt everyone saying 'I'm so OCD in videogames!' ACTUALLY has OCD. I'm sure a minority do.

Yes fine, I should have said "OCD tendancies" or "mannerisms" or whatever. I am not clinically diagnosed and it doesn't affect my life in an extraordinarily negative way - the depression and social anxiety issues have that tied up amongst themselves. I suppose I have minor "OCD" traits, with what I described in the OP, along with all of my games, dvds, CDS, books etc. being alphabetised... can't read a book if it's part of a series unless I go and buy the WHOLE series and read through in order...  going back to check I locked the car almost every time I leave it... None of the massive life-altering difficulties though.

But in fairness I hardly think I was "making light" of it either. I was posting about my need to explore every path in a game like this, and find every item... a need (or compulsion, even) which one could almost describe as obsessive...

So anyway, to get back to a post I made earlier... has anybody seen any screens of the in-game map system?

It crossed your mind that it was meant as an analogy?

Pretty much like saying 'I felt so stiff I felt like I had Multiple Sclerosis' is just an analogy. Do you have OCD? Or do you think you have to be offended on someone else's behalf for what is no more than a poor choice of words in a figurative speech?

It's only going to work (not being OCD about it) if I role-play it. My first playthrough will be as a scatty female elf who will romance Sera and will act impulsively with no concern for Elfroot or whatever. I'm expecting issues, I'm expecting to miss stuff, it's going to be visceral.

Playthrough 2 will be a little more considered with a Qunari mage. That might be completionist, or it might not even happen until playthrough no. 3...

I'm going to have to try working it into the roleplaying as well...I've got 4 different characters in mind, and I can imagine how painfully tedious it'd be to go completionist on all 4. Now to decide which of my planned characters is most ok with strolling around and picking every deep mushroom while the kingdoms burn around them...

That feels very "I get offended for the sake of being offended." There was genuinely no malice in anyone's comments and it's clearly tongue in cheek.

People make light of all sorts of things that would normally have negative effects on people who really have it. It's one of the pillars of comedy. Hell, death itself is often a joke. I mean, diabetes can be extremely severe for some people, but that didn't stop me from laughing when Jonah Jameson told Peter Parker that his photos were going to send him into a diabetic coma.

Anyway, this game looks like it's going to be a serious time sink for me, because I gotta find everything, do every possible quest, etc.. If it's any more extensive than Origins, I can easily see myself squandering 100+ hours of my life into this.
