Looks like Joaquin Phoenix is in negotiations to play Dr. Strange in a Marvel studios film of the same name.
Thoughts? I, for one am excited. (Despite my relative indifference to most of the Stephen Strange comics)

It comes out July 8th, 2016. It's being written by Jon Spaihts, who originally wrote Prometheus before it was rewritten by Damon Lindelof. I hear the original draft of that film from Spaihts was substantially better, so I am excited.
The magic for Thor translated into the universe all right, so I don't think it'll be a problem for Strange.
As long as it isn't too "goofy". Magic stuff is hard to get right on film.

A superhero flick has a certain license for "goof", it just has to tempered with intrigue and good writing.

Haven't they been talking to him since June?
If I recall they wanted him to sign so it could be a big reveal at SDCC.
He could do a good job.
Though I heard he's on the fence because it would be alot of Green Screening (Which considering Doctor Strange is about Elder Gods and Cosmic cosmicness, it's pretty much the only way you can do it)

I'm going to assume Dormammu since he's somewhat well known.
But I'm not that familiar with Doctor Strange aside from some the stuff you pick up from his numerous TV and Game appearances.

I would've been surprised if he had accepted the role. He would've made a great Dr. Strange but it doesn't seem to be his type of movie.

Well, Phoenix would've been great, but he never really seemed like the ideal candidate for the multi-picture-commitment a leading role at Marvel would require.

I really doubt any of the movies from MCU will be standalone anymore. I think the rumors are after RDJ, Evans, and Hemsworth's contracts are up Marvel is going to change up the Avenger roster instead of recast, so Dr. Strange would probably be in that line up. Besides Dr. Strange was already mentioned in The Winter Solder, which would include him in the Avenger Universe.
As for Dr. Strange casting... isn't the current favorite Benedict Cumberbatch? He has the talent but not the look. Jared Leto or Jim Caviezel might be good.
